While the beaches of Budva, Montenegro are nice, they are also crowded during tourist season. Nearby, Matt finds exploring St. Nikola Island, otherwise known locally as Hawaii, worthwhile. What there can be seen, and accessed, well that's another issue.

The island of Sveti Stefan in Budva Montenegro
The earliest record of Sveti Stefan is as the capital city of the Paštrovići community, which became a protectorate of the Republic of Venice in 1423, having been independent since the twelfth century. The Paštrovići accepted Venetian sovereignty because they were fearful of attack from the Turks. They retained considerable autonomy and paid no tribute to Venice, in return for ceasing piracy against Venetian ships
According to a legend recounted by Stjepan Mitrov Ljubiša, the town fortification was funded after Paštrovići looted Turkish ships moored in front of Jaz during Barbarossa's siege of Kotor in 1539. The town was razed shortly after, during the Fourth Ottoman–Venetian War. After continuous pleas by Paštrovići, the Venetian Republic agreed to rebuild it in the 16th century. In the 15th century, the fortified village was built to defend against the Turks and became a haven for pirates of the Adriatic.
Initially, the island with its fortress had 12 families. In the 1800s, a village was established on the island with a population of about 400 people. Villa Miločer was built between 1934 and 1936 as the summer residence of Queen Marija Karadordevic (1900–1961) of the Karađorđević family of Serbia, which was refurbished as part of the Aman Sveti Stefan resorts that opened in 2008–2009. The villa, surrounded by 800 olive trees, is laid out over a 32-hectare (79-acre) plot
The population of the island declined in the first half of the twentieth century, as residents left to join the armed forces or to move overseas. From 400 inhabitants in the nineteenth century, there were just 20 remaining by 1954. The Communist Yugoslav authorities converted it into a luxury hotel and moved the remaining inhabitants to the mainland, and the island village became an exclusive resort frequented by high-profile elites of the world
One of the four churches belonging to Praskvica Monastery on Sveti Stefan was turned into a casino by the Communists. The resort was visited by many celebrities, including Orson Welles, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe, Princess Margaret, Carlo Ponti, Ingemar Stenmark, and Kirk Douglas. It was described as a '70s Adriatic playground on a hilly peninsula that's barely connected to the mainland. It was also a venue for political conferences and an occasional chess venue, attracting top-class players such as Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer.However, the break-up of Yugoslavia in the 1990s brought a decline to the resort.
The Government of Montenegro proposed to recreate the old charm of the island, inviting international bids for a revitalization project. The contract was awarded to Aman Resorts in 2007, and the refurbished resort was completed in 2009. The Aman Sveti Stefan has a 30-year lease. On 13 July 2010 Montenegrin Statehood Day, Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli gave a concert at the resort to mark the Golden Jubilee of the hotel. The hotel won the Hotel of the Year award from Gallivanter's Guide in 2010. In July 2014, tennis champion Novak Djokovic married Jelena Ristić at Sveti Stefan.

The Budva Riviera bustles with natural resources, primarily beaches and little islands, but also with rich nightlife, social events, festivals, carnivals and exceptional restaurants. The cultural heritage and numerous monuments, archaeological sites, fortresses, monasteries and churches reveal a fascinating history of this fortified town dating back to the ancient times.
What to see and do:
- Budva Old town: The main attraction of Budva's Old Town complex is surrounded by ancient walls. Colorful, narrow and winding streets walled by small Mediterranean-stylehouses, small squares, stone-paved sidewalks, and other colorful places of the Old City attract many tourists.
- Mogren beach consist of two smaller beaches, and nestled against a backdrop of the Spas hill and lush Mediterranean greenery. Situated 200m away from the Old Town, it can be easly reached by narrow concrete path.
- Ricardova glava beach: Along the stretch of coast between the walls of the Old Town and Mogren beach, in front of Avala hotel, lies Ricardova glava beach. Beach is around 100m long.
- Dukley lounge beach: A small stretch of sand located in cove at the beginning of Zavala Cape, facing west towards Budva, has been dubbed the Dukley Lounge Beach. The beach can be reached by a footpath from Budva or Becici. It is 80m long and covers an area of 950m2.
- St. Nicholas Island: Island of St. Nicholas is the largest in the southern part of the Adriatic Sea. Its 2km in length and with its geographical position closes the bay of Budva and has three sandy beaches. Tourist from Budva are transported the pier on the islan by ferry.
- Slovenska plaza beach: The largest beach in Budva extends from city marina to the Hotel Park. Mainly pebbly, but sandy in parts, divided into several leased beaches, with many cafes and restaurants. There is a promenade running from the Old Town, throught the Zavala tunnel, and along Becici beach, all the way to Kamenovo. The city beach is 1,600 m long.

In this episode we explore hawaii beach, situated on the north side of a small Island called Sveti Nikola or Saint Nicholas, very close to Budva. You can reach this place by boat, and it is a 10 minutes trip. Most of the island is closed to the public, in the open area you will find a restaurant under the pines, a big pebble beach, and a super view of Budva Riviera for free!

Join me as I take a short walk up to the top of St Nicholas Island off the coast of Turkey. Located near the City of Fethiye. On the island are the remains of several churches built between the fourth and sixth centuries AD. Archaeologists believe it was the location of the original tomb of St Nicholas.

Sveti Stefan, now Aman Sveti Stefan including the Villa Miločer, is a small islet and hotel resort in Montenegro, approximately 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) southeast of Budva. The resort includes the islet of Sveti Stefan and part of the mainland, where the Villa Miločer part of the resort is located. An Adriatic playground for the rich and famous from the 1960s to the 1980s, the hotel is now a 5-star franchise hotel of the international group of Aman Resorts, completed in 2009 and operating under a 30 year lease. Formerly an island, Sveti Stefan is now connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. The resort in total contains 50 rooms, cottages and suites on the island and 8 grand suites at the Villa Miločer. The hotel won the Hotel of the Year award from Gallivanter's Guide in 2010. The island has a 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) coast line in the central part of Montenegro Adriatic coast line. It is situated to the south of Budva between Przno and Sveti Stefan villages. The pink sandy beaches of Sveti Stefan, Miločer Beach and Queen's Beach are part of the coast line. The island encompasses an area of 12,400 m2 (133,000 sq ft). Formerly a village, all of the buildings were acquired by the Yugoslav government and turned into an upscale hotel during the Tito regime. In the 15th century, the island had a fortified village which was known as Divic; a Muslim village on the periphery of land on the Drina, which was renamed as Sveti Stefan, after the Christian Saint Stephen. The fortified village was built to defend against the Turks and became a haven for pirates of the Adriatic. Initially, the island with its fortress had 12 families. Nezaobilazan dio u Budvi je svakako ostrvo Sveti Nikola, koje je sa obalom povezano pješčanim sprudom- tunja; koji je u vrijeme osjeke dubok svega pola metra. Legenda kaže da Sveti Sava krećući iz Budve za Svetu goru, usled velikih talasa nije mogao da se ukrca na brod, pa je bacao kamenje kojim je napravio plićak, i uspio da se ukrca na brod. Ostrvo Sveti Nikola ili kako ga mještani zovu Školj obraslo je bujnom mediteranskom vegetacijom, pretežno zimzelenim drvećem. Predstavlja pravo ptičje carstvo, a bogato je i sitnijom divljači. Posebnu atrakciju predstavljaju mufloni koji naseljavaju najšumovitiji dio ostrva. Na ostrvu se nalazi crkva Sv. Nikole po kojoj je ostrvo dobilo ime, a koja se prvi put spominje u 16. vijeku. Crkva je okružena velikim brojem starih grobova za koje predanje kazuje da su tu sahranjeni učesnici krstaškog pohoda, koje je zadesila epidemija dok su logorovali u Budvi. Na njemu su, takođe, ostaci starog groblja, na kojem su prema legendi sahranjivani i krstaši Rajmunda Tulskog, koji su u XI vijeku prošli kroz Budvu. Kao posebna zanimljivost i atrakcija, na ostrvu su jeleni koji ovdje žive u prirodnom rezervatu. Ostrvo je udaljeno od grada nešto manje od 1 km i do njega možete stici brodićima koji svakodnevno voze sa svih budvanskih plaža. Sastoji se od tri pjeskovite plaže ukupne dužine 840 m i obraslo je raznovrsnim mediteranskim rastinjem. Obale ostrva se strmo spuštaju u more, na kojima se nalazi nekoliko uvala koje su idealne za romantične posjetioce. Najljepše plaže na ostrvu su na njegovom južnom dijelu do kojih se dolazi isključivo barkama.
