ISLE OF MAN: EXPLORING the historic CASTLE RUSHEN in Castletown ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Castle Rushen (Manx: Cashtal Rosien) is a medieval castle located in the Isle of Man's historic capital, Castletown, in the south of the island. It towers over the Market Square to the south-east and the harbour to the north-east. The castle is amongst the best examples of medieval castles on the British Isles, and is still in use as a court house, museum and educational centre.
The Isle of Man is a self-governing British Crown dependency in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland. It’s known for its rugged coastline, medieval castles and rural landscape, rising to a mountainous center. In the capital, Douglas, the Manx Museum traces the island’s Celtic and Viking heritage. The Isle of Man TT is a major annual cross-country motorcycle race around the island.

The Isle of Man -- Ancient Origins
Is this the castle of the Holy Grail? Peel Castle on the Isle of Man has been a monastic retreat, a fortress and home to a Viking king. Neolithic, Bronze Age, and Celtic remains have been excavated in recent years and a visit to Tynwald Hill and the House of Keys reveals evidence of the island's Viking heritage in the parliamentary system and language. We explore the islander's love of folklore and their healthy appetite for locally smoked kippers. For more information visit ontopoftheworld.net and check out episode #26 in the Journeys through the British Isles category.

Day Trip around the Isle of Man
It's a beautiful day and instead of taking you to the garden, I'm going to give you a little tour of the Isle of Man.
Starting in the village of Laxey we'll visit King Orry's Grave, a 5000 year old stone tomb. It has two parts that are separated by a modern road and both sites are plonked down in the middle of a residential area.
From there we head north and visit the beaches of the Point of Ayre and Blue Point. You'll see lighthouses and stretches of beach with barely a soul in sight.
Driving south we wind our way around the Devil's Elbow, where local superstition has it that you can't speak or make noise while you're traveling around it. Above it sits an unexcavated neolithic tomb that I'm sure has something to do with the superstition.
Peel Castle was built by the Vikings and its beautiful ruins stand on Saint Patrick's Isle. I have a little mishap with my keys in the rocks there and afterwards we have a walk around the castle walls. The interior is mainly ruins and the castle is said to be haunted by the ghost of a black dog -- the Moddey Dhoo.
We finish up our drive around the Island with a climb to another ancient burial site -- the Meayll hill circle above Port Erin. It's composed of 12 individual stone tombs that were built in a circle about 5000 years ago.

2018 April walks in the Isle of Man
This is my monthly diary of photographs of highlights of some of the walks taken during the month of April.
April has been a month of mostly fine Spring weather on the Thursdays and Sundays on which I walk, although there were a couple of occasions when it was overcast or misty.
On the penultimate Sunday walk when we visited Cashtal yn Ard, I had the misfortune to drop my camera which I usually have on its strap around my neck. It landed on the edge of the lens mounting and completely jammed the mechanism. Consequently, I had to use my mobile phone to take photos during the final part of that walk. I used my old stand-by camera for the next Thursday walk at Peel. I bought a new camera and received it in time for our final walk of the month.
As usual, I have added audio tracks from some of the videos I have uploaded this month to accompany the photos. They are:
Mr Bojangles – Autoharp
Juliet – Guitar
Highland Cathedral – Guitar
Crazy – Autoharp
Rose Marie – Guitar
Little Arrows – 12-string Guitar
My Mother’s Eyes – Guitar
Iko, Iko – Guitar
Rhythm of the Rain – 12-string Guitar
Oh My Papa – 12-string Guitar
Banks of the Moy – Guitar
Rivers of Texas – Guitar
The Ghost of General Lee – 12-string Guitar
When The Man Comes Around – Guitar
Old Friends – Guitar (Abridged version)
If you would like to see more photos taken on these walks, visit the Facebook site “Isle of Man walks”, or my own Google + page which you should find if you put Tony Archibald in your search engine and click on the one with the Isle of Man flag, the Three Legs of Mann.

ISLE OF MAN (8mm, August 1986)
This is a sound reel and I was disappointed that the 'sound' was just some pleasant music dubbed on afterwards but, nevertheless, I've kept it on.
