ISLAND OF THE YOUTH, CUBA - Everything you need to know
This video covers all aspect of a fly fishing trip to Island of the Youth, including travel to and from, accommodations, food, and what to expect in the way of fishing.

Isla de la Juventud, the largest of the 350 islands in Cuba's Canarreos Archipelago, the island has an estimated population of 100,000. The capital and largest city is Nueva Gerona in the north.
Also known as the Island of many names, at different times in its history, was called Isla de Cotorras (Isle of Parrots), Isla de Tesoros (Treasure Island), and Isla de Pinos (Isle of Pines). It has some beautiful crystalline beaches, like Paraiso Beach, and there are some of the best swamps for bird watching. This island is also home to the Indian Ecological Refuge, which protects a few species of bird that do not live anywhere outside of Cuba. You can step even further back in time at Punta del Este Beach, and visitors can enter a cave with hundreds of pre-Columbian paintings on the walls. Hawksbill sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on the refuge’s protected beaches. Further inland, visitors can hike on trails surrounded by pine and mango trees. In addition it has astounding coral formations, in the Canarreos Archipelago.

Hotel Colony Isle of Youth Cuba
Tour of the hotel and grounds - hotel to stay at on isle of youth whilst attending the international SCUBA diving centre - also nice hotel to simply chill at. Is beautiful - rooms were great - scenary amazing - people lovely - very special - excellent room price. Loved the diving - would highly recommend!! Is a fair distance from Neuva Gerona - but only 20CUC in taxi - is an island to relax and experience real Cuba. I spent 3 days in Gerona and 3 days in the hotel - did some tours with Ecotur from Gerona around the island and also went into the southern part of the island - cave paintings 1200 years old and completely secluded beaches - just a handful of visitors a year. The island is still recovering from the hurricanes and needs visitors. See something very few people see and experience!!!

A little film taken whilst paddling in the sea by the hotel. Water so warm and clear, and by the pier lots of things to see if snorkelling. Saw some big star fish too! You can see that the pier was destroyed by the hurricanes. If you go diving now, you just go to the marina 5 mins down the road and get the boat from there. More people need to come to the hotel and to the island to get investment back in to the island to finance more repairs - such a wonderful place and people ... If you're staying in Neuva Gerona, stay in a casa in the centre ... is worth it.

Cuba Presidio Modelo Isle of Youth
Built in 1926 by its future inmates as an exact copy of the equally notorious Joliet Prison in the US. The last prisoner was released in 1967. Fidel Castro was also kept in this prison as well as other rebels but I understand not in one of these ciruclar buildings. This place is definitely worth a visit - quite a scary place!

Crocodile walking Isle of Youth Cuba
A crocodile walking at the Criadero Cocodrilo in Isle of Youth Cuba - a crocodile breeding centre. Fantastic place and huge - perfect habitat for the animals - would definitely recommend visiting. They have Cuban crocodiles here too - but not sure which ones these are - they have about 3 types of crocodiles there.
