On the Battlefield of Caporetto - Exploring the Kolovrat I THE GREAT WAR Special
The Walk of Peace in the Soča Region Foundation
Follow Indy and his guide Leon up the heights of the Kolovrat Ridge and into the Italian frontline trenches and bunkers. From there we take a look down towards the Isonzo Valley and reconstruct the advance of the German and Austro-Hungarian forces during the Battle of Caporetto towards Tolmin and Kobarid. Walking through the narrow corridors, we try to understand the conditions in which the defenders lived and fought.

Kobarid/Caporetto + Isonzo/Soca Kayak 23 agosto 2018
- L'alto Isonzo in Slovenia, è ancora protetto e preservato: niente turismo viziato, niente musiche di moda, niente strepitosi centri benessere.

Early morning walk in Kobarid, Slovenia
Kobarid is best known by its Italian name, that of Caporetto and in this case for the battle that took place there in October 1917 and wherever we go in the town and around we are reminded of the first world war. But other than that Kobarid has much more to offer in the form of nature along the banks of the turquoise coloured Soca river. In this film, I go out for a walk to the outstanding Vielki Kozjak waterfall and discuss the history of the town, pointing out relics from WW1 and finishing with commentary on an ambush in WW2. Other than this, I also discuss nature and motorhome life!

Kobarid
the Emerald Beauty, Isonzo ( Soča )
The Isonzo (in Italian) or Soča (in Slovenian) is a 138 km long river that flows through western Slovenia (96 kilometres) and northeastern Italy (43 kilometres). An Alpine river in character, its source lies in the Trenta Valley in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, at an elevation of 876 metres. The river runs past the towns of Bovec, Kobarid, Tolmin, Kanal ob Soči, Nova Gorica (SLO) and Gorizia (ITA), entering the Adriatic Sea close to the Italian town of Monfalcone.
Due to its emerald-green water, the river is marketed as The Emerald Beauty. It is said to be one of the rare rivers in the world that retains such a colour throughout their length.Giuseppe Ungaretti, one of the greatest Italian poets, describes the Isonzo in the poem The Rivers.
The Soča valley was the stage of major military operations including the twelve battles of the Isonzo on the Italian front in World War I between May 1915 and November 1917, in which over 500,000 Austro-Hungarian and Italian soldiers lost their lives.
During his stay with Italian troops, Ernerst Hemingway, in his A Farewell to Arms wrote about these wounderfull landscapes and bloody river. As american war voluntary in a foreign country, he never forgot this pearl of nature and these waters of patriotic sacrifice till his death in 1961.
