Not only is this mosque one of the largest in Southeast Asia, it also happens to be staggeringly beautiful. Since Jakarta is mainly an Islamic community, a visit to this massive mosque is an ideal way to observe the city's religious life. Visitors are allowed to enter when prayers are not happening, but should remember to dress modestly and remove their shoes.

JAKARTA’S INSPIRING ISTIQLAL MOSQUE

First opened to the public by Indonesia’s first President, Soekarno, on 22 February 1978, the grand Istiqlal Mosque of Jakarta is the largest mosque in South East Asia both in structure and capacity, as it can accommodate congregations of up to 120,000 people.

Istiqlal Mosque ('Independence Mosque') in Jakarta, Indonesia is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. It was built to commemorate Indonesian independence. This building can welcome more than 120 000 people.

Monas / Merdeka Square
The National Monument (Indonesian: Monumen Nasional, abbreviated Monas) is a 132m tower in the centre of Merdeka Square (measuring 1km2), symbolizing the fight for Indonesia. It has been built to commemorate the struggle for Indonesian independence.

Istiqlal Mosque, or Masjid Istiqlal, (Independence Mosque) in Jakarta, Indonesia is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia in terms of capacity to accommodate people and building structure. This national mosque of Indonesia was built to commemorate Indonesian independence, as nation's gratitude for God's blessings; the independence of Indonesia. Therefore the national mosque of Indonesia was named Istiqlal, an Arabic word for Independence.

Istiqlal Mosque, or Masjid Istiqlal, in Jakarta, Indonesia is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the third largest Sunni mosque in term of capacity. This national mosque of Indonesia was built to commemorate Indonesian independence and named Istiqlal, an Arabic word for independence. The mosque was opened to the public 22 February 1978. Within Jakarta, the mosque is positioned next to Merdeka Square and the Jakarta Cathedral.

My Indonesian Police Escort to Masjid Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta

So this turned into an amazingly cool first day in Jakarta. I was checking out the National Monument when I decided to photograph a fountain I had seen on the taxi ride over. Once finished I wanted to see the Masjid Istiqlal, the largest Mosque in Southeast Asia, for prayer. I asked a police officer how to get there and in rapid Indonesia he explained. No idea what he said but from hand signals I caught the jist. And off I went.

So about 2 minutes later he zooms up next to me and backs his motorbike in. He says give him my back so he can put it on his footboard and give me a lift to the mosque. Now growing up in the US, cops rarely offer you a ride somewhere other than the police station. Although a bit skeptical, this being my first time in Jakarta, I said what the hell and hopped on. And this is what happened. A fun quick ride to the other side of downtown Jakarta with a police officer. Made it to the mosque just in time. NO WAY I could have made it there walking.

Once again, this western perception of the world, particularly the Muslim world, being evil and bad is proven false.
