Japan Railway Journal Episode 11 - Second Chances for Used Trains in Southeast Asia
Second Chances for Used Trains in Southeast Asia Aired: Thursday, February 11, 2016
Used Japanese trains are being given a new lease of life in Southeast Asia. Demand for Japanese trains is high because they are air-conditioned, and are always well maintained. We follow a Series 205 on its way to its new home in Indonesia, and see how Japanese engineers are sharing their knowledge as they teach track maintenance in Myanmar. We also travel to Yubari City in Hokkaido, where a citizens group is striving to preserve the local railway heritage and a closed steam locomotive museum.

ELLE LOCAL vol.4 HIDA
Northern Gifu is comprised of four municipalities—Takayama, Hida, Gero, and Shirakawa—and is an area with two distinct personalities.
Hida is known for its rich historical heritage and the cozy embrace of its quintessential Japanese scenery. The satoyama landscape of UNESCO World Heritage Site Shirakawa-go village is a scene of biological diversity and interdependency between humans and nature, and in Takayama city, you can find vestiges of the Edo Period in neighborhoods that have been designated Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Then there’s Gero Onsen, known as one of Japan’s three best hot springs, the newly revamped Auberge Hida no Mori run by chef of Italian cuisine Toshiyuki Nakayasu, a quaint countryside retreat-like inn, and more. The region is coming into its own again as a destination for slow travel—but naturally, it’s in no hurry.
But the region is also a showcase for craftsmanship of all kinds, from architecture to crafts. There’s the Finn Juhl House in Takayama, a replica of the iconic Danish furniture sculptor’s private home outside of Copenhagen that doubles as a museum dedicated to his work. Shirakawa-go village is famous and recognized by UNESCO for its gassho -style architecture, where the vernacular houses have grand roofs that resemble two hands clasped together in prayer. And the treasured traditional woodcrafts have a unique elegance and charm. The formative art that dots the Hida landscape developed alongside the region’s lush forests, and remains a wonder to behold.
Hida is an art lover’s wonderland, fresh air for the mind, body, and spirit—the kind of place you want to take in slowly. Our advice is to let the sights, sounds, and beauty work their magic on you. The only question is, which side interests you?

HIROSHIMA AND MIYAJIMA - day 02 - Japan
MUSIC:
Classical Japanese Koto Music - Izumi-Kai Original Instrumental Group - Rokudan from UnexpectedExpressive
Ohayo my friends and welcome to day two of our trip in Japan. Today we leave Kyoto and head to Hiroshima. From there a local train then a ferry to Itsukushima Island, also known as Miyajima.
We had a late night and thus didn’t want to get up for the early train to Hiroshima. We decided to wait after peak hour to avoid the locals going to work and school. We had breakfast at Delifrance (of all places) but ate things that weren’t very French. Delicious though and their coffee brewing method is interesting to watch.
By the time we arrived at Hiroshima Station it was lunchtime. We left our bags at a luggage holder and went looking for something to eat. One of the dishes my friend, Géraldine, had on her to-eat list while in Japan was the famous Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. To our great surprise we saw advertisement for the dish everywhere as we were walking through the station. A couple of floors up and we found a corridor of restaurants with two or three of them specialising in okonomiyaki. We picked the one with the most crowd, Goemon Okonomiyaki, and sat right at the counter in front of the hotplates. A very memorable experience. From watching them prepare the dish in front of us, to tasting the meal, to seeing every single staff member saying goodbye to every single client leaving the restaurant. That was amazing. It was quick, delicious and surprisingly fun.
With our stomachs full, we started our long walk to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial or more popularly known as the Atomic Bomb Dome. Though long, it was nice to see a little of the city along the way. The landmark is quite impressive in itself but to see how everything has been rebuilt around it, is just a amazing. It makes you wonder if there ever was a atomic blast. Walking around the park felt like I was on religious grounds. I’m not a religious person but I felt an inner calmness and peace. A respect for what had happened here and the courage and strength the people of Hiroshima, of Japan, had to get through it. And build a park that evokes peace. A well named park.
On the way back to Hiroshima Station, we walked by Carp Castle, better known as Hiroshima Castle. Actually, it’s the castle’s second compound that you see here. The original castle was, obviously, destroyed in the atomic blast and a replica built in it’s place. Now though it serves as a museum of Hiroshima’s history before World War II. We didn’t get to visit as time was short to get to Miyajima before sunset.
Back in Hiroshima Station, we jumped on a local train to Miyajimaguchi to catch a ferry to Itsukushima Island, better known as Miyajima. This is a gorgeous place. Little town atmosphere on the shores of Hiroshima Bay. The old and the not-so old architecture. The Itsukushima Shrine is amazing and it’s Torii is just a wonder. We got here in time to drop our bags at the hotel before heading straight back down to the torii. We stayed about two and half hours taking photos of it and the shrine, and watching the sun set. What a beautiful sunset it was too. Then we made our way to the town to have a look around and find one of the very few restaurants still open. Both Géraldine and I loved the main street of Itsukushima Town for it’s old look and atmosphere. It gave us the impression of being in a different era. We chose to eat at Mametanuki restaurant. A wonderful little place where the owner is, I think, English but the cuisine definitely Japanese. Very friendly place with good service and delicious food.
Once full and warm we made our way back to our hotel, Kikunoya. A beautiful hotel with a restaurant and onsens. When we told the receptionist we weren’t going to have dinner there, they happily showed us the locations of restaurants that were going to be open and advised not to eat to late as their kitchens close quite early. Very friendly and helpful. Oh and they have a foot spa at the front entrance.
Well that’s it my friends. The end of another wonderful day in Japan. Hope to see all of you for day 3. Oyasuminasai.

Welcome to Daisaku Ikeda Children's Stories YouTube Channel!
It features animated children's stories by Daisaku Ikeda, peacebuilder, educator, author and Buddhist philosopher from Japan. His stories impart hope, courage, friendship and peace through vivid adventures of children around the world and seek to inspire them to believe in themselves and have big dreams.
The stories have also been shown on TV in more than 25 countries including Japan, Iceland, Spain, Panama, Australia, Nepal, Malaysia and the Philippines. They have also been used as educational materials in classrooms in India and the Philippines.
In an interview, Mr. Ikeda explained his motivation for writing stories for young people: Children's stories epitomize peace. War, on the other hand, deprives children of their dreams and slams the door on their future. He adds, All children possess innate dignity, rich creativity and vitality, and says children have the inborn ability to find hope in the most hopeless environment…. They are hope itself.

Kagoshima (鹿児島市 Kagoshima-shi?) is the capital city of Kagoshima Prefecture at the south western tip of the island of Kyushu in Japan, and the largest city in the prefecture by some margin. It has been nicknamed the Naples of the Eastern world for its bay location (Aira Caldera), hot climate, and impressive stratovolcano, Sakurajima. The city was officially founded on April 1, 1889.Kagoshima City is approximately 40 minutes from Kagoshima Airport, and features shopping districts and malls covering a large area. The transportation system within the city consists of the Shinkansen (bullet train), local train, city trams, buses, and ferries to-and-from Sakurajima. Near a shopping district known as Dolphin Port and the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal is a large and modern aquarium called the Kagoshima City Aquarium, which was established along the docks with a direct view of Sakurajima in 1997. One of the best places to view the city (and Sakurajima) is from the Amuran Ferris wheel on top of Amu Plaza Kagoshima, the shopping center attached to the central Kagoshima-Chūō Station. Just outside of the city is the early-Edo Period Sengan-en (Isoteien) Japanese Garden. The garden was originally a villa to the Shimadzu Family and is still maintained by descendants today. Outside the garden grounds is a Satsuma kiriko cut-glass factory where visitors are welcome to view the glass-blowing and glass-cutting process, and the Shoko Shūseikan Museum which was built in 1865 and registered as a National Historic Site in 1959. The former “Shuseikan” industrial complex and the former machine factory were submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage as part of a group list titled, “Modern Industrial Heritage Sites in Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture”.Kagoshima Prefecture (also known as the Satsuma Domain) was the center of the territory of the Shimazu Clan for many centuries. It was a busy political and commercial port city throughout the medieval period and into the Edo period (1603–1867) when it formally became the capital of the Shimazu's fief, the Satsuma Domain. The official emblem is a modification of the Shimazu's kamon designed to resemble the character 市(shi, means city). Satsuma remained one of the most powerful and wealthiest domains in the country throughout the period, and though international trade was banned for much of this period, the city remained quite active and prosperous. It served not only as the political center for Satsuma, but also for the semi-independent vassal kingdom of Ryūkyū; Ryūkyūan traders and emissaries frequented the city, and a special Ryukyuan embassy building was established to help administer relations between the two polities and to house visitors and emissaries. Kagoshima was also a significant center of Christian activity in Japan prior to the imposition of bans against that religion in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
Kagoshima was bombarded by the British Royal Navy in 1863 to punish the daimyō of Satsuma for the murder of Charles Lennox Richardson on the Tōkaidō highway the previous year and its refusal to pay an indemnity in compensation.
Kagoshima was the birthplace and scene of the last stand of Saigō Takamori, a legendary figure in Meiji Era Japan in 1877 at the end of the Satsuma Rebellion.
Japan's industrial revolution is said to have started here, stimulated by the young students' train station. Seventeen young men of Satsuma broke the Tokugawa ban on foreign travel, traveling first to England and then the United States before returning to share the benefits of the best of Western science and technology.[citation needed] A statue was erected outside of the train station as a tribute to them.
Kagoshima was also the birthplace of Tōgō Heihachirō. After naval studies in England between 1871 and 1878, Togo's role as Chief Admiral of the Grand Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy in the Russo-Japanese War made him a legend in Japanese military history, and earned him the nickname 'Nelson of the Orient' in Britain. He led the Grand Fleet to two startling victories in 1904 and 1905, completely destroying Russia as a naval power in the East, and thereby contributing to the failed revolution in Russia in 1905.
The Japanese diplomat Sadomitsu Sakoguchi revolutionized Kagoshima's environmental economic plan with his dissertation on water pollution and orange harvesting.
