Dislocations: language, loss and discovery in narratives of migration
On this occasion Italian author, Amara Lakhous, and local Italian Australian author, Archimede Fusillo, will each speak briefly about their writing experiences, focusing on migration and the situation of those finding themselves on the periphery. They will also read relevant excerpts of their works and respond to questions from the audience at the conclusion of their presentations.
Amara Lakhous was born in 1970 in Algiers and has been living in Rome since 1995. He has a degree in philosophy from the University of Algiers and another in cultural anthropology from the University la Sapienza, Rome. Lakhous doesn't only use the unadulterated perspective of the immigrant to focus on the central issues which natives overlook. He also experiments with language by enriching his Italian prose with expressions, imagery and terms from his original language: I Arabise the Italian and Italianise the Arabic. Amara Lakhous has been awarded, among others, the Premio Flaiano per la narrativa in 2006 and Algeria's most prestigious literary award, the Prix des libraires Algeriens in 2008.
Archimede Fusillo Archimede Fusillo, the son of Italian migrants, was born and grew up in Melbourne. Surrounded by wonderful storytellers, he learnt early on the value of stories in shaping our lives and connecting people, irrespective of backgrounds. Success with short stories about growing up in a multi¬cultural Melbourne led Fusillo to try his hand at writing a novel. In 1997 his first novel, Sparring With Shadows, was a Notable Children's Book Council of Australia book and went on to be shortlisted for the Italy in the World Literature Awards. He followed this up with The Dons and later Last of the Braves, among others.

Museum dedicated to migration opens in London
(5 May 2017) LEADIN
A museum dedicated to global migration has opened in south London.
Containing two separate exhibitions, it reflects the lives of refugees and others who find homes in new countries.
SCRIPT
Rows of miniature human models stand side by side at a new museum dedicated to migration.
Representing refugees, they form part of an exhibition titled 'Call Me By My Name: Stories from Calais and beyond'.
It features works by artists and photographers, refugees, volunteers and members of the public. It aims to give faces and voices to a previously nameless group of migrants, each with a unique story and set of reasons for being in Calais.
We wanted to have a look behind the headlines and at some of the humanity and the human stories behind what we read about in the newspapers, explains Migration Museum Director, Sophie Henderson.
She explains they wanted all voices associated with the refugee camp known as 'The Jungle to be represented including refugees, volunteers, Calais residents and also the truck drivers who were the targeted but people trying to illegally enter the UK.
In a second exhibition at the museum, '100 Images of Migration', photographs are displayed which were the product of a competition run with the Guardian newspaper.
People were asked to submit images that resonated with them on the topic of migration.
I think it is an important exhibition because I think that the stories of immigrants that come to the UK, or just immigrants in general are often misconstrued by the media and I think it's important to have artists and photographers that give or try to give like an unbiased perspective on these people's stories, says student Yan Xing who is visiting the exhibition.
Migration Museum Director Sophie Henderson concludes that the main objective of the museum is to reflect everybody's story.
Because if you peel back the layers of anyone's family history you'll find some sort of migration history, either of coming into the country at some point in the past or leaving the country, she says.
I think it joins people up with the panorama, with the big picture so they can see how they fit in to the grand arc of the story.
The Migration Museum at The Workshop, Lambeth, is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and entry is free.

John Brumby - Re-opening of Melbourne's Chinese Museum
Victorians once again have access to priceless relics and artefacts chronicling the history of Chinese migration in Victoria with the re-opening of the Chinese Museum in Melbourne today.
The Premier of Victoria, John Brumby, re-opened the refurbished Chinese Museum in Cohen Place in the heart of Chinatown, which has been backed by $1.2 million from the Victorian Government for a significant redevelopment.
Mr Brumby said the Chinese community was long-established in Victoria and preserving its history and culture was vital for future generations.
Chinatown is a living tribute to Chinese culture, to art and language, to its food and architecture and is a big part of what makes Melbourne such a great city, Mr Brumby said.
On any given day you can see people enjoying the many attractions in the area and the refurbished Chinese Museum will further position Chinatown as a major cultural and tourist hub.
That's why our Government has provided support for this important project -- we want to ensure that the history and experience of our Chinese community here in Victoria is accessible to all Victorians and to visitors to our State.
The Chinese Museum is an invaluable resource for younger generations to have an opportunity to experience the richness of Chinese heritage and culture and appreciate the importance of migration.
Improvements to the Museum include the installation of air conditioning to create a comfortable environment for visitors and preserve the collection.
In addition, the existing community room has been upgraded and now includes the use of a kitchen facility for visitors. An interactive exhibition called Bridge of Memories, has also been established, which tells the stories of Chinese migrants in Australia since the 1950s.
The Victorian Government's $1.2 million in funding is from the Cultural Precincts Enhancement Fund, a $10 million partnership between the Victorian Government, City of Melbourne and the Chinese, Italian and Greek communities, to revitalise Melbourne's well-established and popular cultural precincts - Lygon Street, Little Bourke Street and Lonsdale Street.
In Little Bourke Street, a number of streetscape improvements, delivered by the City of Melbourne with the support of the Victorian Government, have already been launched as part of this initiative, including:
The new themed lighting markers at the corner of Spring and Little Bourke Streets; and
Two refurbished archways and suspended lighting between Exhibition and Russell Streets.

Created over the course of four years, designed and constructed with an unparalleled attention to detail, Residence 32CD at the Four Seasons Private Residences in San Francisco was designed for the most discriminating of owners.
Presenting an unparalleled opportunity to acquire an asset totally re-invented and finished beyond the highest imaginable standard, Residence 32CD comprises a living/dining area, a superbly equipped Miele kitchen, a sensuous master suite, an office, an en-suite guest bedroom, a home theater, an additional bath and powder bath, plus a laundry room.
As in the Gulfstream G650 or a Perini Navi yacht, every aspect of this luxurious residence was deliberately designed or chosen to be uniquely the best.
A serenely composed collection of spaces incorporating astounding construction and technological values, Residence 32CD was originally two apartments, joined under a plan conceived by San Francisco architect Fu-Tung Cheng and brought to final fruition by the globally recognized interior design and architecture firm ODADA. Essentially a new structure within the original hi-rise volumes, the complete reconstruction and soundproofing of the over 3,800 square foot residence was completed by Black Mountain Construction & Development under the guidance of the acoustical management experts at Charles Salter + Associates.
One of the most extraordinary aspects of Residence 32CD is the completely soundproofed home theater by AudioVisions– uniquely, a cinema in the sky– incorporating Dolby Atmos, Kaleidescape Entertainment, and Strato systems for an unparalleled entertainment experience, acoustically isolated from the rest of the condominium.
As expected, the technology includes a sophisticated Savant system, the gold standard in home automation, in a project that required hundreds of highly skilled man hours plus a meticulous level of oversight daily– from the client himself, the engineers, the designers and the contractor.
Throughout Residence 32CD the ceilings are hand-troweled plaster, custom blended Intonaco, the entry and master bedroom walls, a custom-modified Tadelakt - an ancient Moroccan technique – and Grassello walls and ceiling in the office, all, along with fabric and wood paneling throughout, eliminate the use of paint anywhere in the home.
The extensive cabinet work is impeccably flush, meeting the floors and ceilings with mere millimeters of clearance. Entire walls of European Sycamore wood panels throughout conceal a variety of functions– from temperature-controlled Miele wine storage to fitted closets– all created from book-matched veneer from the same tree. The extravagant use of granite in the baths and kitchen is unparalleled in both rarity and detailing, with walls paneled in book-matched slabs from floor to ceiling and countertops fabricated to appear monolithic.
An apartment unmatched in quality and scale, Four Seasons Residence 32CD affords a level of luxurious attention to detail which can only be appreciated by the most astute aficionado of rarity and sophistication.
