Ancient theatre of Taormina - Taormina, Italy
[Find out more at:
The lighting design for the ancient theatre of Taormina was commissioned by the Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity in order to extend visiting hours at the site into the evening. Operating in collaboration with the Energy Service Company Metaenergia (ESCo), with whom an agreement was signed for the provision of electrical energy and services from 2013 to 2017, this Department opted to use iGuzzini technology for the new project. ESCo also immediately recognised iGuzzini's immense expertise in the lighting sector and its skill in using light to both protect and enhance cultural heritage.
This particular project has two general aims: on one hand it seeks to use light to enhance the site's splendid classical architecture, while on the other, it allows visitors to access the theatre in perfect safety even at night. The increase in revenue created, thanks to a rise in visits, together with lower management costs also mean that the archaeological site can enjoy simple, programmed maintenance while simultaneously bringing other benefits to the area.
The project designed by Engineer Roberto Sannasardo from the Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity involved updating the existing lighting system (installed in 1999 by the French studio Roland Jeol) with new technological solutions that were not available at the time. Non-invasive design solutions were specifically requested in the commission, so compact and hidden luminaires were chosen, and wherever possible, the existing installation system was used to avoid attaching more brackets to the ancient walls. The overall aim was to create a lighting system that would have a realistic effect and succeed in reproducing the subtle colours of dusk. This is why warm colour temperatures (2900-3000 K) were chosen that create a picturesque image of the theatre. At the same time, using products with high colour rendering (a CRI of 90) ensures that the site's natural materials are properly saturated with the required range of colour. Moreover, replacing all the existing lighting units with new DALI LED elements has resulted in an 80% reduction in consumption and consequently lower management costs. To ensure that the site can be visited in perfect safety at night, the exit routes have been lit with linear lighting created by Underscore InOut luminaires recessed in the handrails and diffused lighting produced by Woody series floodlights . The theatre entrance is also lit by Woody luminaires that anticipate the line of floodlights used in the arena. The designer chose the Woody series because of its high level of visual comfort and wide variety of installation systems and uses, which range from highlighting details to landscaping. From the site's viewing platform, a rhythmic procession of pole-mounted iTeka luminaires introduces the visitor to this remarkable example of classical architecture with directional lighting created by optics with OptiSmart reflectors that optimizes both visual comfort and the spacing of the luminaires. Woody downlights illuminate both the vaulted portico and the open portico, emphasizing the structure of the steps. From there, Underscore InOut Side Bend luminaires installed in the handrail guide the visitor towards the orchestra with an even and continuous line of light that produces no shadow areas whatsoever. In this way light becomes a kind of geometrical sign that indicates the way ahead. Underscore InOut luminaires are incredibly reliable and perfectly suited to the site's climate, so constant, long-lasting, high performance is guaranteed. Continuing up to the orchestra, the cavea (auditorium) and paraskenia (side wings) are lit with wide beam Maxiwoody luminaires, whereas Woody luminaires guide visitors along the parodoi (stage side entrances) towards the skene (backstage) where Miniwoody luminaires light up the proskenion (area in front of the skene) and Maxiwoody floodlights the skene.
This new lighting system, officially unveiled at a press conference and opening event on June 28th, illuminates the splendid architecture and natural beauty of this archaeological site perfectly while also strictly complying with all the relevant safety standards.

Luna lyrics:
Only you can hear my soul, only you can hear my soul
Luna tu
Quanti sono i canti che risuonano
Desideri che attraverso i secoli
Han solcato il cielo per raggiungerti
Porto per poeti che non scrivono
E che il loro senno spesso perdono
Tu accogli i sospiri di chi spasima
E regali un sogno ad ogni anima
Luna che mi guardi adesso ascoltami
Only you can hear my soul, only you can hear my soul
Luna tu
Only you can hear my soul, only you can hear my soul
Luna tu
Tu rischiari il cielo e la sua immensitá
E ci mostri solo la meta che vuoi
Come poi facciamo quasi sempre noi
Only you can hear my soul, only you can hear my soul
Alba lux, diva mea, diva es silentissima!
Luna lyrics:
Only you can hear my soul
Moon
How many songs yet resounded
Through the centuries desires
Winged the heaven to reach you
Harbour for non-writing poets
Who often lose their minds
You hear the sighs of yearning
And give a dream to every soul
Guiding moon, listen to me now
Only you can hear my soul
Moon
You know the secret of eternity
And the narrow path of truth
Lighten my heart
Heart of a man who doesn't know
That love can ease the pain
Like a fire that burns the soul
Moon
You light up the heaven and its immensity
We only see the side you wish to show
Like we ourselves mostly do
Non-flying porcelain angels
Burning paper souls
Hearts falling like leaves
Dreams going up in smoke
Children of the earth and of yourself, who knows
That love can ease the pain
Like a fire that burns the soul
But love is the driving force of our heart
The power that moves and illuminates everything
Only you can hear my soul
The dawning light, my goddess, my oh so silent goddess

Alessandro Safina in Concert: Only You (2001)Theatre at Taormina, Sicily.
Teatro Greco di Taormina, Alessandro Safina in Concerto nel brano, Luna - Only you.
Hailing from Siena, Italy's newest singing sensation, Alessandro Safina, possesses a commanding tenor voice and is equally at home singing both pop and opera, often blurring the boundaries between the two. With the hit single Luna from his self-titled debut album topping the international charts, GREAT PERFORMANCES captures Safinaat peak performance, live in concert from the spectacular ancientGreek Theatre at Taormina, Sicily. With Mount Etna and the Mediterranean Sea providing a breathtaking backdrop, Safina performs selections from his critically acclaimed first record.
Alessandro Safina (born October 14, 1963) is an Italian operatic tenor.
Born in Siena, Italy, Safina's love of opera was encouraged early in life by his mother encouraged his eagerness. His father was also a singer. By the age of nine, Safina had decided to devote himself completely to opera. Already, he has performed on stage across Europe in Puccini's La Bohème and Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin.
The early 21st century saw the rise of this Italian singer who has combined his opera roots with modern-day pop music. Late in his teens Safina began to appreciate pop and rock music, drawing inspiration from such bands as Genesis, The Clash, Simple Minds, and U2. Shortly thereafter, he began to combine the opera and pop genres.
In the '90s, Safina was discovered by renowned Italian pianist/composer Romano Musumarra, and the pair quickly began to record together, in an attempt to bring Safina's dream of creating a soulful new pop opera music to fruition. The end result was Safina's self-titled debut, issued in September 2001. It contained a single named Luna, released in 1999, which reached number 2 in the Dutch charts. The song is mainly about a gleaming moon.
In 2001 Safina contributed to the score of Baz Luhrmanns film Moulin Rouge!. He performed Elton John's Your Song with Ewan McGregor.
In September 2001 his concert Only You was taped in the Amphitheater Greco-Romano in Taormina, Sicily. The concert was later broadcast in the series Great Performances by American public channel PBS and released in 2003 on DVD.
In 2003, Safina performed the English and Korean vocals for a Korean song called Hamangyeon, which was featured as part of the soundtrack for Dae Jang Geum, a popular South Korean historical drama TV series.
Safina appeared in a film Tosca e Altre Due, based on the opera Tosca of Puccini.
In 2007 he recorded a duet with the British Soprano Sarah Brightman for her album Symphony. He was then invited to join her during her Symphony World Tour for Mexico's presentations in November 2008 and in the Asian Tour in march-April 2009. He sang with Sarah the following songs: Canto della Terra, Sarai Qui, The Phantom of the opera.

Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy )
Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy )
( Taormina - Italy ) is a hilltop town on the east coast of Sicily. It sits near Mount Etna, an active volcano with trails leading to the summit. The town is known for the Teatro Antico di Taormina, an ancient Greco-Roman theater still used today. Near the theater, cliffs drop to the sea forming coves with sandy beaches. A narrow stretch of sand connects the mainland to Isola Bella, a tiny island and nature reserve.
( Taormina - Italy ) Sicily's legendary resort town. Twisting medieval streets and a second-century Greek theater add to its romantic air, which inspired the writings of D.H. Lawrence and Truman Capote. Take a cable car to the beach, or walk uphill behind the Church of St. Joseph for panoramic views.
The present town of ( Taormina - Italy ) occupies the ancient site, on a lofty hill which forms the last projecting point of the mountain ridge that extends along the coast from Cape Pelorus to this point. The site of the old town is about 250 metres (820 ft) above the sea, while a very steep and almost isolated rock, crowned by a Saracen castle, rises about 150 metres (490 ft) higher: this is undoubtedly the site of the ancient Arx or citadel, the inaccessible position of which is repeatedly alluded to by ancient writers. Portions of the ancient walls may be traced at intervals all round the brow of the hill, the whole of the summit of which was evidently occupied by the ancient city. Numerous fragments of ancient buildings are scattered over its whole surface, including extensive reservoirs of water, sepulchres, tesselated pavements, etc., and the remains of a spacious edifice, commonly called a Naumachia, but the real purpose of which it is difficult to determine.

ITALY VLOG |WEEKEND IN TAORMINA SICILY | WHAT TO DO/WHERE TO EAT | MISS GUNNER
Hey my lovelies! Today I am sharing with you my Taormina, Sicily travel vlog with you. Here are my top tips of what to do and eat while you are in Taormina. I’ll show you where to find best cannoli and pasta and gelato! All listed below:
Full blog here
Explore Taormina old town: I would recommend to go early if you would like to get photos, nobody starts waking up before about 7:45am. If you want to even beat the delivery men stocking the shops and restaurants, get out there at 7am and you’ll have the whole town to yourself. Then save your social time for the night - I love that so many Italians have their summer holiday here, they all wander around the town with their families late into the evening, the town square will still be packed at midnight.
Eat Cannoli at La Pignolata Guinness Taormina. They’ve been around for 40 years and they know what they’re doing! Opens from 16:00-24:00. One cannolo cost 2 Euros. They will make this fresh right in front of you. I made the mistake of buying a premade one at one of the tourist traps and had to throw it out because it was so disappointing. So don’t make that mistake!
Eat at Ostera de Rita: We just stumbled across this restaurant by accident. There’s usually a queue but it’s worth the wait. They serve the best seafood pasta here! They will give you a complimentary bruschetta so you don’t have to order one. Save yourself for other amazing dishes. Staff are nice, they will warn you against over ordering.
Visit Isola Bella Beach. By far one of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily. The water is crystal clear. You can either get the cable car down from Taormina town or walk down the huge set of steps. (Make sure you have good shoes!) It can get quite crowded so if you are not hiring a sun lounge, get down early to claim your spot. Otherwise your hotel should be able to book you a sun lounge at one of the lidos for around 20 euros for the day. We spent a day at Pizzichella beach club. We had Marco looking after us for the day and it was just lovely. The seafood pasta was good.
Go shopping in Corso Umberto. Taormina has so many amazing stores and amazing handmade ceramics. I’m not much of a kitchen person but I had to buy something for my house because it was so cute. Make sure you check out the dress boutiques, I found amazing local pieces that were perfect for late summer nights in the old town.
Cocktails at Daiquiri: This was one of my favourite spots in Taormina to have cocktails. You sit on the cute steps of Taormina and just people watch. It’s situated right in front of a square. Amazing service and best tasting cocktails. The cocktails aren’t cheap, but you get a massive tray of snacks with them.
Visit the Greek Theatre (Teatro Greco) You can check out the site to see what events and shows might be on while you are there. If nothing excites you, just visit during the day - it’s a beautiful place just to wander around. Amazing views looking over Taormina town and the sea.
Watch Italian Opera in Taormina. Ticket is around 20 euros. A fun night out watching classic songs in the middle of Taormina old town. The ticket includes mid-show drinks on their rooftop terrace. I would try to get there early to get a good seat. Also find a seat that’s near an air conditioning!! Otherwise it can get very hot. It’s not really for serious opera buffs, but the performers put their heart into the show and it’s great to support local entertainers.
Visit Parco Duca De Ceasar. A stunning park overlooking the coastline surrounding Taormina.
Stay at Hotel Villa Carlotta. The hotel is situated just outside of the main part of Taormina. Has a pool (a little rare as you get closer to the old town) and the breakfast is amazing. Fantastic and friendly service.
