Weekend Walk 28 - Alresford to Winchester - Itchen Way
From the Hampshire town of Alresford into the Itchen valley, passing through the villages of Ovington, Itchen Stoke (including the church), Avington, Itchen Abbas, Martyr Worthy, Easton and Abbots Worthy then south to Winchester and a visit to the City Mill.
The Itchen Way
This is a walk I did this morning from Eastleigh Railway Station back to Winchester along the Itchen Way, which mainly follows the old Itchen Navigation Canal.
The music is my piece 'Klaikangwon' and also 'Wednesdays'.
You can download the scores, together with midi, mp3 and playalong version from:
Weekend Walk 30 - Eastleigh to Weston, Southampton - Itchen Way
The final stage of the Itchen Way, from Bishopstoke bridge to Weston Point in Southampton, via Southampton Airport, Itchen Valley Country Park, Riverside Park, Woodmill, St Denny's, Bitterne and Woolston. At Woodmill Lock the fast chalk river suddenly becomes tidal estuary. Such a contrast as the Itchen joins the Test to form Southampton Water, to the shallow clear streams of Cheriton.
Weekend Walk 29 - Winchester to Eastleigh - Itchen Way
From the City Mill in Winchester along the c17 Itchen Navigation as far as Eastleigh. Passing Wharf Hill, St Catherine's Hill, Twyford Down, Twyford, Shawford, Bambridge and Highbridge, and many locks, hundreds of years old.

One minute of the river in Winchester
Winchester is a really beautiful city, it used to be the capital of England! But these days it's more like a town than a bustling city, full of cute little coffee shops and lovely green things. I love the river the most, it's very calming to look down over.
Weekend Walk 27 - Cheriton to Alresford - Itchen Way
The first stage of The Itchen Way, a few miles from the source of the River Itchen near Cheriton in Hampshire, north past Tichborne to Alresford.
Walk up the Itchen navigation
Some footage of my walk up the Itchen navigation (a disused canal) in Hampshire UK. A 10.4 mile walk from Southampton, through my hometown, Eastleigh and onwards to Winchester. I have walked the route from Eastleigh to Winchester several times but this footage is from a short walk, just over 3 miles from Bishopstoke to Brambridge. There is a lot of wildlife to be seen along the way, some of which is quite rare. The week before me and a friend walked to Shawford (5 miles) and we saw a fox, 4 deer, a water vole and lots of bats. I hoped to capture some footage of these on this walk, burt as luck would have it, there was no interesting wildlife this time (because i had my camera!) I saw ducks, swans and a moorhen. But I did see the bats again and one of my missions was to get some video footage of them, which i did. but with the fading light and the fact they move so fast you have to watch carefully at the end of the video to see them! There was some sections along the way where the river had burst its banks and was flowing across the path, eroding out channels and creating mini waterfalls which cascaded into the floodplains.

Water levels high after the wet weather during 2012, a complete turnaround from a year before when southern England was in drought and water levels in chalk streams such as the Itchen were abnormally low.

Rediscovering Medieval Winchester: England's early capital city
Winchester. Once a Roman market town, this city became a site of importance in early medieval England. In the ninth century, Alfred the Great would establish it as his principal city in the kingdom of Wessex, and from that point onwards it developed into a key site for religious, royal and economic activity; the three core components of the early medieval capital city.
But how much of this history is still visible today? How is Winchester’s early medieval importance understood to the modern mind? A closer look of what remains here in Winchester today will allow us to understand the prominence of the city in the early medieval period, and also allow us to reflect on how early medieval Winchester is perceived today. We will be asking whether what remains reflects Winchester’s status as the early medieval capital city.
Our documentary forms part of our second year history degree course at the University of Southampton.
