Wood Sculpture by Ken Newman ~ Tharalsons Oak Hollow
Observing, Interpreting and Expressing in Sculpture is how I approach my wood sculptures. Sculpting in wood since the early 1980's enjoy this video of how traveling impacts my work.
A wonderful oak burl gifted to me by another artist came to life on a 40 day road trip throughout the Southeast. There was no preconceived idea for this burl when it was thrown in the trailer for this road trip.
After a sculpture show in Little Rock Arkansas, we left for the Buffalo River to begin our camping adventure in the Southeast. Once camp was set up it didn't take long before I was rolling the oak burl around in my hands. Where to go with it? This was a departure for me from my usual process of a preconceived idea married to a piece of wood through an outside experience. But then again, a departure from the norm is what drives my creative spirits. So the more I handled the oak burl, the more I walked the hardwood forest, and after a trip to a small natural history display at the park's visitor center the parts of the puzzle started to come together.
There was no mass of wood to carve; there was no shape to the block. There was no great color. There was only texture, texture, texture. Only the weathered wood of an oak burl. What a perfect match that weathered texture of an oak burl to bring a toad to life.
I continued to carve as we traveled from the Buffalo River through the southeast including; the Great Smokies; Blue Ridge; Stone Mountain; and Lake Norman. Along the way, mementos were acquired to surround this toad on its journey.
This sculpture resides in Ogden, Utah.

Congress to Consider New Logging and Mining Bills
Congress will reportedly consider two bills that would allow states to hand over vast tracts of federal land for mining, logging or other commercial activities. The bills come just weeks after the arrest of an armed militia that took over a wildlife refuge in Oregon in protest at federal oversight of public land. The legislation, which will be presented to the House committee on natural resources on Thursday, would loosen federal authority over parts of the 600 million acres. Environmentalists have already condemned the latest attempt to strip federal control from public land, warning that endangered species and vital ecosystem services, such as clean water, will be put at risk.
