Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine
Ivano-Frankivsk [iˈβɑnofrɐnˈkiu̯sʲk] (About this sound listen) Russian: Ивано-Франковск; formerly Stanyslaviv, Stanislau, or Stanisławów; see below) is a historic city located in Western Ukraine. It is the administrative centre of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. Administratively, it is designated as a city of regional significance within the oblast, and together with a number of rural localities, is incorporated as Ivano-Frankivsk Municipality. Population: 230,929 (2016 est.).
Built in the mid-17th century as a fortress of the Polish Potocki family, Stanisławów was annexed to the Habsburg Empire during the First Partition of Poland in 1772, after which it became the property of the State within the Austrian Empire. The fortress was slowly transformed into one of the most prominent cities at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. After World War I, for several months, it served as a temporary capital of the West Ukrainian People's Republic. Following Peace of Riga, Stanisławów became part of the Second Polish Republic. After the Soviet invasion of Poland at the onset of World War II, the city was annexed by the Soviet Union, only to be occupied by Nazi Germany two years later. With the liberation of Soviet Ukraine in 1944 and the shifting of borders, the Communist regime ran the city for the next four-and-a-half decades. A few years before the fall of the Soviet Union, the blue-yellow flag was raised in the city as the symbol of an independent Ukraine.
A city visitor may find elements of various cultures intertwined within Ivano-Frankivsk, the Polish city hall, the Austro-Polish city's business center, the Soviet prefabicated apartment blocks at the city's urban-rural fringe, and others. Ivano-Frankivsk is also one of the principal cities of the Carpathian Euroregion.

Singing the National Anthem to reopen the rally season: Ivano-Frankivsk 14 March 2014
After a break lasting over a week, local activists from Right Sector, Self-Defence and their associates in local government decided to revive the daily 6pm rally outside the Regional Administration building.
The rally was hardly well attended. And this anthem came only after a false start, when the first speaker started his - relatively moderate - presentation when the female MC realised that the anthem had not been sung.

Before the Thaw: A walk around Ivano-Frankivsk's Euromaidan barricades.
By 16 February 2014, Ivano-Frankivsk's Euromaidan barricades had gone. Unseasonably warm weather meant that it was impossible to keep the snow and ice barricades up, while political negotiations also ended the occupation of the surrounded regional and city administration building.

Working Under Shellfire In Eastern Ukraine
The Ukraine's Frontline Fuel Plant: The conflict in Ukraine has killed more than 10,000 people and displaced 2 million. But the conflict has also disrupted business, including one crucial steel-producing plant on the front lines of the war.
Subscribe to Journeyman here:
As the Ukrainian army battles well-armed Russian separatists, the hulking Metinvest plant in eastern Ukraine continues to process coal into coke, a high grade fuel essential for manufacturing steel. The plant is considered an indispensable part of Ukraine's economy, even as it continues functioning under repeated attacks in a war zone. There have been a lot of bad days here. The worst was when we were attacked by a series of rockets...Everything was on fire and smoking, people died that day, says the Director of the plant, Musa Magomedov. Sometimes you don’t realize there is shooting around. It blends in with all of the mechanical sounds. American assistance has been vital for keeping the plant open. Before the war, the plant received 20% of it coal from the U.S. Now it's closer to 50%. Without this support, the plant, the surrounding town and even Ukraine as a whole would be in jeopardy. It's a domino principle, says Magomedov. If we leave this place...the metal price will be less competitive, people will leave those factories...we can lose the country in the end.

As you know, among the seven deadly sins in the Holy Bible, the most terrible one is the sin of graphomania. When an official begins to write memoirs - this is a terrible thing.
But now we have not an ordinary situation. First, this official, who started writing memoirs, worked as an official in the town called Pripyat. And in 1980 he began to write about everything that happened there. So, this is not the sin of graphomania. About 30 books were written by writer Oleksandr Esaulov, who is our special guest in our studio today.

SUMMARY
=======
The General Government (German: Generalgouvernement, Polish: Generalne Gubernatorstwo, Ukrainian: Генеральна губернія), also referred to as the General Governorate, was a German zone of occupation established after the joint invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in 1939 at the onset of World War II. The newly occupied Second Polish Republic was split into three zones: the General Government in its centre, Polish areas annexed by Nazi Germany in the west, and Polish areas annexed by the Soviet Union in the east. The territory was expanded substantially in 1941 to include the new District of Galicia. The basis for the formation of General Government was a German-Soviet claim of the total collapse of the Polish state, announced by Adolf Hitler on October 8, 1939 through the so-called Annexation Decree on the Administration of the Occupied Polish Territories. This rationale was utilized by the German Supreme Court to reassign the identity of all Polish nationals as stateless subjects, with exception of the ethnic Germans of interwar Poland, named the only rightful citizens of the Third Reich in disregard of international law.The General Government was run by Nazi Germany as a separate administrative unit for logistical purposes. When the Wehrmacht forces attacked the Soviet positions in Kresy in June 1941 during its initially successful Operation Barbarossa, the area of the General Government was enlarged by the inclusion of the regions of Poland occupied by the Red Army since 1939. Within days, East Galicia was overrun and renamed Distrikt Galizien. Until 1945 the General Government comprised much of central, southern, and southeastern Poland within its prewar borders (and of modern-day Western Ukraine), including the major Polish cities of Warsaw, Kraków, Lwów (now Lviv, renamed Lemberg), Lublin (see Lublin Reservation), Tarnopol (see history of Tarnopol Ghetto), Stanisławów (now Ivano-Frankivsk, renamed Stanislau; see Stanisławów Ghetto), Drohobycz, and Sambor (see Drohobycz and Sambor Ghettos) and others. Geographical locations were renamed in German. The administration of the General Government was composed entirely of the German officials with the intent that the area was to be colonized by Germanic settlers who would reduce the local Polish population to the level of serfs before their eventual biological extermination. The Nazi German rulers of the Generalgouvernement had no intention of sharing power with the locals throughout the war, regardless of their ethnicity and political orientation. The authorities rarely mentioned the name Poland in legal correspondence. The only exception to this was the General Government's Bank of Issue in Poland (Polish: Bank Emisyjny w Polsce, German: Emissionbank in Polen).
