Fukushima's Forbidden Zone as a Site for Performance Art: Three Years Later

In January and July, 2014, William Johnston traveled to areas affected by the explosions of the reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant following the earthquake and tsunami that occurred on March 11, 2011. In this presentation, Johnston will show images of Eiko performing in these places in the context of the ongoing measures to deal with this crisis.
William Johnston received his BA from Elmira College in Elmira, New York, and his MA in Regional Studies East Asia and PhD in History and East Asian Languages, both from Harvard. He is Professor of History, East Asian Studies, and Science in Society at Wesleyan University, where he was also a Faculty Fellow at the College of the Environment for the 2012-13 academic year; during the 2014-15 academic year he is the Edwin O. Reischauer Visiting Professor in History at Harvard and Visiting Artist in the Dance Department and the College of East Asian Studies at Wesleyan University. He has pursued photography seriously since 1993, and his images of Eiko in the Fukushima area are scheduled for exhibitions at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art, Colorado State University at Colorado Springs, and at Wesleyan University.
Samurai Training in Kyoto, Japan
Kyoto is the most historic city in Japan, so I wanted to learn more about one very influential aspect of Japanese culture - the Samurai!
For this experience I connected with Kyoto Samurai Experience for my authentic Samurai training -
I learned about the samurai warriors sword, samurai role in Japanese history, and the importance of zen meditation in samurai or bushido culture.
After my mind was focused, I got to wield a real Japanese sword or Katana.
No doubt this wasn’t a true window into the Samurai world, but it is a fun peak at the idiology and practices of such an influential aspect of Japanese culture.

발트에서 보내는 마지막 아침. 중세의 수도 트라카이를 지나 시간을 거슬러 리투아니아 민족이 시작된 곳, 케르나베로 향했다. 네리스 강과 함께 만 년의 시간을 품어온 넓은 계곡, 강을 바라보는 평평한 땅에는 갑자기 솟아오른 언덕들이 있다. 일부러 쌓아올린 듯한 언덕들은 빙하기가 만들어준 선물로 이 천연 요새 덕분에 고대에는 마을이 중세에는 성이 세워졌다. 벌써 40년째 발굴이 진행 중인 땅엔 만 년의 역사가 묻혀 있다. 지금은 비록 작은 마을이지만 케르나베는 리투아니아에서 최초로 사람이 살기 시작한 곳이다. “민다우가스 왕의 대관식과 리투아니아의 건국을 기념하며 케르나베의 살아 있는 고고학 행사인 실험고고학 축제를 시작하겠습니다. 이제 시작입니다. 어서 오세요” 벌써 20년째 이어지고 있는 케르나베의 실험 고고학 축제. 이 3일 동안 케르나베 사람들은 근대와 중세의 시간을 거슬러 가톨릭교를 받아들이기 전 이교도였던 시절로 돌아간다. 빌뉴스에 가득한 교회도 트라카이의 호수도 성도 없지만 리투아니아가 시작된 이곳은 모두의 오랜 고향, 낡은 울타리와 넉넉한 미소, 힘찬 북소리가 환영해주는 이곳에서 2018년의 사람들은 고대 또는 중세의 3일을 살아보게 된다. 아이들이 나무 호른을 불어 시작을 알리면 잔디밭 위에서는 중세의 전투가 벌어진다. 그런데 뭔가 박자도 잘 안 맞고 뛸 때는 주저함이 느껴지는데다 칼을 휘두르는 것도 방패로 막는 것도 조금은 어설픈 느낌이 난다. 그러다 전투 중에 객석으로 도망쳐서 잠시 2018년으로 돌아오는 사람도 있다. “건축가, 사장, 회장, 평범한 회사원들이 대부분이에요. 모인 사람들 중에 역사학과 관련된 직업을 가진 사람은 한 명도 없어요. 우리를 연결하는 건 역사에 관한 사랑, 천 년 전에 있었던 일을 1초라도 같이 느끼면서 경험하고 싶어하는 마음이에요. 그래서 다 같이 이런 일을 하며 여기서 며칠간 사는 거예요” 실험고고학 축제가 열리는 동안은 지붕에나 바닥에나 모두 오래된 것들뿐이다. 신발도 신지 않은 아이는 돌로 도토리를 깨서 먹고 딱히 가지고 놀 것이 없어 보이는 들판에선 친구와 오랜만에 걸음을 맞춰본다. 그 옛날엔 삶을 편하게 해줬지만 지금은 불편하거나 우스꽝스러운 것들, 누구에게 팔 것도 아닌데 얼굴이 빨개지도록 하루종일 나무 껍질을 벗기고 어디에 쓸지 모를 가죽 손질을 배우는 케르나베에서의 3일, 어린 아이가 있는 힘껏 쏜 화살은 중세 케르나베를 무너뜨린 십자군을 향한다. “케르나베에서는 리투아니아 고대 종교의 마지막 흔적들을 찾을 수 있어요. 유럽에서 제일 마지막까지 기독교를 받아들이지 않고 있던 리투아니아의 상징과도 같은 장소죠. 리투아니아는 러시아의 지배를 두 번이나 받았지만 민족의 독자적인 문화를 유지해왔어요” 독자적인 문화 중엔 최근에 생긴 것도 있다. 2009년부터 매년 7월 6일 9시가 되면 리투아니아 사람들은 가까운 언덕에 올라가거나 어디에 있든 모이기 좋은 장소로 가서 다 함께 국가를 부를 준비를 한다. 리투아니아라는 이름이 역사에 기록된 지 천 년이 된 기념으로 만든 새로운 전통을 위해 사람들은 또 한 번 국기를 펼쳐든다. “리투아니아라는 이름이 역사에 처음 기록된 지 1009년이 됐어요. 또 올해는 리투아니아의 독립 100주년이잖아요. 그래서 큰 축제를 여는 거죠” “여기는 우리들의 마음이 있는 곳이에요. 그 마음은 우리 민족에게 중요한 순간이 올 때마다 항상 깨어나요. 우리가 독립을 위해 싸웠을 때 맨 처음 리투아니아 국기를 올린 곳이 바로 여기, 케르나베예요. 한국에도 좋은 일이 일어나기를 기원해요. 똑똑하고 아름답고 열심히 일하는 당신의 민족에게 좋은 일이 생기면 좋겠어요. 형제자매들이 만날 수 있는 통일된 한국이 되길 바랄게요”
