Behind the scenes:
The Shimantogawa is a 196 kilometer long river in the heartland of Shikoku. Being remote from big cities and having no dams it is also called «Japan’s last clear stream». The landmark of the river are its submersible bridges that are made without railings in order to withstand floods. They call it «chinkabashi» in Japan. The Shimantogawa area is also a perfect place a bicycle tour. You can rent a bicycle at Ekawasaki station and ride 40 kilometers along the river to Nakamura / Shimanto. It’s a downhill ride. I made this tour in May 2018.
Technical infos:
I used a DJI Mavic Pro drone for the aerial shots and fixed a DJI Osmo+ (the DJI Osmo Pocket didn’t exist at the time) and a Crystal Sky display on the front of my bicycle.

The Iya Valley (祖谷渓谷 Iya Keikoku) region in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan is a scenic area known for its dramatic mountain valleys and old vine bridges. The Iya Valley and the inner parts of Shikoku have historically been remote and difficult to enter, making them a favorite retreat for refugees and defeated Heike warriors although access has improved in recent years.
Kazurabashi Bridge
Suspension bridges made of mountain vines (kazurabashi) were one of the only ways to easily move people and goods across the river of the of the Iya Valley in the past. Their origins are unclear but legends say that they were either first raised by Kobo Daishi, who was founder of the Shingon Sect of Japanese Buddhism, or built by Heike refugees hiding in the area after their defeat in the Gempei War or Genpei kassen (1180-1185) as a means of quickly cutting off access to the valley.
There are only three surviving bridge as though 13 bridges once spanned the valley. Iya Kazurabashi (祖谷かずら橋), the largest and most popular of the remaining bridges, stretches 45 meters across the Iya River at the center of the valley, and offers visitors an restless view of the water 14 meters below the open slats of the span. The bridge is rebuilt every three years and is anchored to tall cedar trees at both ends and has steel cables hidden within the vines for safety. The bridge a one way street

The Iya Valley is usually divided into two areas. Nishi Iya (West Iya) located around the entrance to the valley and is slightly more developed and more accessible as there are relatively frequent buses to some of the major attractions. Oku Iya (Inner Iya, also called Higashi Iya or East Iya) lies further back into the valley so is difficult to reach without a rental car or other means of private transportation.
Access Information
A rental car is recommended to visit the area.

Iya Kazurabashi can be reached by bus (70 minutes, 1290 yen, 7 buses per day) and Oboke Stations (20 minutes, 660 yen, 4-8 buses per day).

The Shimanto River (四万十川 Shimanto-gawa?) is a river in western Kōchi Prefecture, Japan. 196 km in length, it has a watershed of 2,270 km². Its name is written with kanji meaning forty thousand and ten.
Since the river is remote from major cities and does not have any dams, it is sometimes referred to as the last clear stream of Japan. Fishing and production of nori is a thriving industry along the river. It has been named one of the Three Clear-Flowing Rivers in Japan, along with the Nagara River in Gifu Prefecture and the Kakita River (柿田川 Kakita-gawa) in Shizuoka Prefecture.
The river also has 47 chinkabashi (沈下橋 lit. 'sinking bridge') including those of tributaries. Chinkabashi are low water crossings without parapets in order not to be washed away by floods. The prefecture decided to preserve them as cultural heritages.
