From the top of Mt. Otokoyama, Iwashimizu Hachimangu
overlooks Yawata city where three of Kyoto’s major rivers (the
Kizu, Uji, and Katsura) meet and become the Yodo river, flowing
south to Osaka. This made the area a key junction for transportation
between Kyoto and Osaka during the time when boats were
the most important method for shipping and travel. It was,
therefore, a very important place for both commerce and
politics.

京都府八幡市にある、春の桜の名所であり国宝の御本殿を有する石清水八幡宮（いわしみずはちまんぐう）を訪ねました。2019年4月9日訪問です。

Driving Out Demons at Iwashimizu Hachiman gū in Yawata, Kyoto
Last Sunday, January 31st, the annual “driving out demons” matsuri at Iwashimizu Hachiman-gū in Yawata City, Kyoto Prefecture, was held. It was a fine sunny day and a huge crowd was expected. Two ceremonies where held, at 13.00 and 14.00 in the early afternoon.
After Shinto priest and staff had gathered themselves in front of the Honden (本殿), the sacred beach bow was figuratively shot towards the four lucky directions (northeast, southeast and southwest, northwest) and this year lucky direction south-southeast. This was followed by striking a budding peach branch in the same directions.
Then four “demons - (Oni yarai hito - 鬼やらい人) enter the grounds shouting and trying to scare the kids. The demons then tried to overrun the Shinto clergy, who defended themselves by trowing “Lucky beans (Fukumame - 福豆)” at them while shouting “ Demons out! Luck in! (鬼は外! 福は内! Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!).
The demons were driven out and then the real fun started, “Lucky beans (Fukumame - 福豆)”, where being thrown towards the eagerly awaiting crowd.
What an experience, on this nice sunny day atop of Mt. Otokoyama in Yawata City, Kyoto Prefecture.
The Unlikely Connection between Thomas Edison and Iwashimizu Hachimangu
In southern Kyoto, you'll find Iwashimizu Hachimangu, a shrine that has been famous for its powers of warding against evil since the Kamakura Period (1185 – 1333). Nicknamed Hachiman-san by locals. It also has an unlikely connection to Thomas Edison's light bulb invention.

Last Saturday (January 24), it was such a fine day here in Kyoto, that I couldn’t resist biking to the Yawata area of Kyoto and pay a visit to the Iwashimizu Hachiman-gū shrine (石清水八幡宮) on Mt. Otokoyama (男山). Although it was near the end of January many people were still coming to the shrine to celebrate Hatsumōde (初詣). As I entered the shrine grounds, sacred kagura music was being played, while a shrine maiden or Miko performed a purification ceremony. She was purifying Hamaya arrows. They are “demon-breaking arrows” and many people bought them to ward off misfortune and attract good luck. In the other hand she was holding a Kagura suzu or “divine entertainment bells”, while the flute and drum accompanied her.
Iwashimizu Hachiman-gū is like a fortress on a hill with a scenic view of the Yawata area. The shrine was founded in 859 by the monk Gyōkyō (行教) and is dedicated to “Hachiman” the god of war. The present Honden (本殿) was built by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, in 1634.
Many Emperors and Shogun’s visited here to pray for success in the many battles they fought. Until this day the Iwashimizu Hachiman-gū is one of the three most important Hachiman shrines in Japan. It was also the head shrine of the Minamoto clan. Minamoto no Yorinobu, in 1046 as governor of Kawachi, began worship at the Iwashimizu Hachiman-gū Shrine.
Iwashimizu Hachiman-gū has an interesting connection to the life and work of Thomas Edison, who used bamboo collected from the groves at the shrine by his assistant William H. Moore to make filaments for his first electric light bulb in 1880.
After visiting the shrine don’t forget to visit the observatory to get a splendid view of the Yawata area.

The Oracle of Emperor Seiwa: founding of Iwashimizu Hachiman-gū!
The Iwashimizu Hachiman-gū (石清水八幡宮) is a Shinto shrine in the city of Yawata in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan.
History
The shrine's Heian period connections with the Kyoto and the Imperial family date from its founding in 859 (Jōgan ) when construction on its earliest structures commenced. Shrine tradition explains that Emperor Seiwa ordered the shrine to be built in obeisance to an oracle in which Hachiman expressed the desire to be near to Kyoto to watch over the city and the Imperial House of Japan.
This vision was reported by a Buddhist monk, Gyōkyō, who had a second vision which led to selecting the Otokoyama location where the shrine now stands.
The shrine became the object of Imperial patronage during the early Heian period. In 965, Emperor Murakami ordered that Imperial messengers were sent to report important events to the guardian kami of Japan. These heihaku were initially presented to 16 shrines including the Ōharano Shrine.
The shrine's importance and influence grew in succeeding centuries; and its extensive landholdings led to modest conflicts with Minamoto no Yoritomo during the years in which the Kamakura shogunate was establishing itself. The shrine sought to maintain its traditional exemption from contributing to paying the costs of military forces. In time, the bakufu faded away; and the shrine endured.

Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine Kyoto Japan - God of the Bow and Arrow
Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine (National treasures of Japan) is enshrined on Mt.Otokoyama. We take a Cable Car; then , we walk up the mountain until we reach there. This shrine came to be known as a “Bujin”, a guardian deity for Samurai, and this shrine was visited by many famous samurai lords. It is worshipped as a shrine for the spiritual protection of the nation, warding off evil, confident victory (God of Bow and Arrow).

Located in the neighboring city of Yawata, Iwashimizu Hachimangū is a large shrine complex on top of Mt. Otokoyama that allows visitors to experience nature and Shinto removed from the crowds that can be encountered in Kyoto proper. With a history over a thousand years old, Iwashimizu Hachimangū is one of only four remaining examples of the Hachiman-zukuri architecture style that involves the skillful combination of different structures and their roofs that look from the outside to be wholly separate but are actually a single interior. Featuring colorful wood carvings of flora and fauna, hundreds of stone lanterns and a surprise connection to Thomas Edison, Iwashimizu Hachimangū makes for a delightful trip out of the city.

御祭神：天之御中主神（あめのみなかぬしのかみ）
宇宙が初めて形成され、胎動し始めた時に天上界に現れた三柱の一柱で、特別な神として仰がれる。
八幡宮が鎮座する男山の中腹に、石清水八幡宮の中で最も聖なる場所とされる石清水社が鎮る。表参道から裏参道へと通じる道の途中に、霊泉の石清水井が湧き出す。
鳥居をくぐって真正面に井戸があり、その右手の少し小高い所に石清水社の祠が祀られている。
石清水八幡宮の小冊子によれば、冬に凍らず夏に涸れない霊泉とされている。石清水八幡宮の名前の由来にもなった由緒正しい井戸として知られ、古来からの聖域。
石清水社の龍

上半身は龍で、下半身の躍動感は馬のよう。
