RUSSIA: 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF KALASHNIKOV AK 47 MACHINE GUN
Russian/Nat
Half a century since the first AK-47 machine guns went into production and the world is still firing away.
At the international arms fair this week in Abu-Dhabi, Kalashnikovs will once again be one of Russia's hottest sellers.
But as Russia marks the 50th anniversary of the world's best-known weapon, workers at the Kalashnikov factory are still waiting for their pay.
Even Russia's most well-known product is suffering from economic reform.
When Russia designed the AK-47 back in 1947 they didn't image it would be used against them.
First Afghanistan and then Chechnya -- Kalashnikovs have become so widespread that Russians often find themselves looking down the barrel of their own creations.
Across the world in armed conflicts everywhere, Russia's AK-47 has been the weapon of choice.
50 years ago the first batch of Kalashnikov's went into production at this very factory in Izhevsk, more than a thousand kilometers (650 (m) miles) east of Moscow.
Today the assembly line still churns out the deadly weapons but it no longer makes a profit.
During Soviet times 97 percent of the Kalashnikov's produced were made for the Defense Ministry.
Today defense orders have plummeted.
And Kalashnikov has not been able to sell its war products to private buyers because arms sales are still controlled by the Russian government organ Rosvoruzhenia.
Used by some 55 countries and an assortment of guerillas, terrorists and petty thugs, Russia's AK-47 are nonetheless suffering a crisis of reform.
The man behind the AK-47, Mikhail Kalashnikov is still in charge of production.
The Red Army sergeant originally designed the gun when he was 21 years old, after witnessing massive Russian casualties in the second World War
He wanted to give Russia a gun that would blow the Germans out of the water. And he did.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I am constantly watching where Russian arms are in the arms market, what we have to offer in terms of quality and effectiveness. And, I see that even up until now there is not a more reliable, simple weapon than ours. I will be the first to shake the hand of the man who can design a better gun.
SUPER CAPTION: Mikhail Kalashnikov, designer of the original Kalashnikov or AK-47
Mikhail Kalashnikov has become a well-known representative of his own creation.
He travels himself to the annual arms exhibit in Abu-Dabi, touting the virtues of the rugged and reliable automatic rifle to potential Arab buyers.
Fifty years on the Kalashnikov is still the worlds most popular gun.
Governments, rebels and common criminals consistently chose the AK-47 to fight their battles.
In fact, the Kalashnikov has become a sort of Russian national symbol.
An example of one Russian product that has withstood the tests of time and international competition.
Moscow recently opened a Kalashnikov museum to honor the success of the Russian national weapon.
Mikhail Kalashnikov was again on hand -- proud to be creator of a device that has killed (m) millions of people across the globe.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
No its not all the same to me who is holding the gun, I am concerned about whose hands these guns fall into. But, and I have said it a million times, it is not the gun or the creator who are responsible for the way they are used. We are not to be blamed if they are misused.
SUPER CAPTION: Mikhail Kalashnikov, designer of the original Kalashnikov or AK-47
What makes the Kalashnikov so special is its simplicity.
Especially in adverse conditions, where much of the world's wars are fought, the Kalashnikov excels.
One of its special features is that it will shoot when wet. America's competing M-16 cant do that.

The Russian gunsmith Mikhail Kalashnikov developed his famous AK-47 in the 1940s and it remains one of the world's most popular and reliable submachine guns.
Kalashnikov says he always lived according to the principle All complicated is unnecessary, all necessary is simple.
*
The AK-47 assault rifle, designed in the 1940s, remains the hands-down winner when it comes to machine guns.
It's simple design and ease of use has made it popular among working soldiers around the globe.
Made in 11 countries, used by 55 armies, the Ak-47 (or Avtomat Kalashnikova) was developed after the Great Patriotic war.
It was the brainchild of a 21-year-old tank commander named Mikhail Kalashnikov. He was wounded in battle in October 1941 and decided to create a gun to repel the invaders from his home country.
I read this maxim. The Great Lord said, 'All complicated is unnecessary, all necessary is simple.' This is a slogan I have been living and working all my life, Kalashnikov said.
This gun has had a huge influence on warfare over 60 years.
The AK-47 was used during the Vietnam War, and is still in use in the Middle East, Africa, and throughout Latin America.
Military forces throughout the world recognize the advantage of the simple weapon.
It's estimated there are about 100 million AKs in the world -- more than any other assault firearm.
The gun is depicted on the flags and coat of arms of several countries and organizations.
But its inventor is upset by misuse of the gun. Kalashnikov as long called for strict controls on the sale and production of AKs.
We need them to be under strict control and we need to counteract the manufacturing of counterfeit assault rifles by those who aim just at killing or wounding someone. We need an unequivocal struggle against this. This is what I demand, he said.
Retired General Kalashnikov made no money from his gun. But he has sold the Kalashnikov brand name. Now it appears on goods as varied as watches, mp3 players and off-road cars.

Michael Kalashnikov. Part-2
Kalashnikov was included to the tender for a new assault rifle with two-year lateness, only after the Victory over Axis countries in 1945. The rush has made its influence on his work. The test team made its verdict: 'the system is unreliable and it cannot be improved.' However, Kalashnikov was so assertive and so believed in the advantage of his rifle, that he's luck to persuade and even engaged them for the common work on AK improvement.
Major General Michael Kalashnikov, the General Constructor of 'Izhmash Plant' (Izhevsk, Udmurtia Republic): 'During all my life I was luck to meet good peoples in Russia. A sole handicraftsman hardly can invent something important, but it's may be different while he's acting as a part of a good team. However, he must try to inspire the team by his idea. So, a designer need good, harmonious, relations with the team.
The recurrent trials were more successful, but Kalashnikov wished more. Despite the rules, he with his supporter, Alexander Zaytsev, changed the design completely. Only 3 designs were included in the short list in December, 1947. His main competitor was Bulkin, the arm weapon designer from Tula arm weapon plant, but the last rejected all request for changing from the test team. Kalashnikov from other hand tried to eliminate any source for worry from a potential consumer.
Sergey Plotnikov, Central Military Museum, senior consultant: This is Bulkin's TKB-415 assault rifle. This part is closing the whole internal space on the AK-47, but here it's open, and allows for dust to enter. If too much dirt enters, the work of the rifle can be disturbed.
1948, January 10. The test team came to conclusion that despite the rifles of Bulkin and Dementyev are more precise, AK is more reliable and more simple for use.
Major General Michael Kalashnikov, the General Constructor of 'Izhmash Plant' (Izhevsk, Udmurtia Republic): I read in my childhood: 'the God said, no complicated is need, any need isn't complicated.
In the middle of 1948, the initial party of the assault rifles entered service.
Specification: AK-47. Caliber -- 7.72 mm. Mass -- 4.8 kg. Rapidity -- 600 shots/min. Effective range -- 800 m.
All that year, while the Army tested his gun, Kalashnikov was in the units. Tens of the claim, made by the soldiers and the officers, were took by him in to consideration during his further work on AK serial.
In 1949 the assault rifle of Michel Timofeyevich Kalashnikov has finally entered service. The officially name was: 7.62 mm Kalashnikov's automat. Nowhere was said about 'AK-47' designation. Nevertheless, this is a rifle with the etching: AK-47 No 1. Indeed, it's the name of the prototype, which took part in the tender in 1947. This name was cooked by the Kalashnikov's team, and now became to the international brand.
In the same year, 1947, the major sergeant Michael Kalashnikov was awarded by 1st degree Stalin's price.
Major General Michael Kalashnikov, the General Constructor of 'Izhmash Plant' (Izhevsk, Udmurtia Republic): 'Then the price was 150 thousands rubles. That year the 'Pobeda' (Victory) class private car was appeared in the car-shops, and I bought such car for 16 thousands rubles. I even could buy a number of such cars ... so it was good money then. My constructor's life was following. However, it was rather difficult life.
After the demobilization, Kalashnikov got over to Izhevsk. Then the serial production of AK-47 was started there. He initially became to be a leader engineer and next time -- the General Constructor of the plant. During some years, Kalashnikov has made 'a finish' for each detail of his gun. Simultaneously he took a part in the new tender for hand machinegun. He won again. In 1959, the machinegun and the modernized version of AK-47 -- AKM -- have entered service.
Major General Michael Kalashnikov, the General Constructor of 'Izhmash Plant' (Izhevsk, Udmurtia Republic): Modernization -- isn't simple deal. It's the work for a bulk of years. Our soldier takes with him a lot of gadgets, he's over loaded. Then for each reduced gram the inventors should be awarded.
AKM was on the service longer that any other modification of AK. It also could be equipped with fire-depressing and silencing devices, optics and night vision. The parts of the rifle became to be made with plastic or powder-metallic technology. Also the problem of high dispersion was fixed.
Vitaly Babakob, TsNII Tochmash, Leading Engineer: For the greater accuracy in automatic fire the barrel gas-compensator was adjusted on AKM. This invention allowed big improvement in AKM fire accuracy.
The modernized AKM and the hand machinegun had the unified round (7.62x39 mm) and is made by unified technology. The Russian military was especially satisfied with the cross-transferability of the arsenal and magazines. Such compatibility was then in no other army. In 1959, Kalashnikov was awarded with the Star of Labor Hero for its last inventions: AKM and the hand machinegun.
In the middle of 60th the new General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev took in Izhevsk plant. He liked the new knife-bayonet for AKM very much. Being a compulsive hunter Brezhnev asked Kalashnikov, whether he has something like that for animal hunting. Michael Timofeyevich Kalashnikov promised to Brezhnev to make a special hunter knife mimics the form of knife-bayonet of AKM. Such special knifes were made only a number. They were presented for Brezhnev and for a number of Soviet chieftains.
1964. August 2. After the impudent and smart provocation with US frigate Maddox, the Americans started their dirty war against Vietnamese people democracy. The American president Johnson has ordered to bomb the peaceful citizens of free North Vietnam. This war became to a kind of tournament between two World Greatest arm weapon masters: Kalashnikov and Stoner.
Document: 1968, January 20. Pentagon. The Head of Ground Forces Stuff. Confident. The M-16 automatic assault rifle still isn't reliable. The 30% of all personal losses is happen due to the failure of our main infantry weapon. The chief of the Special Department, Defense Ministry.
The Vietnamese patriots did no have such problems. AK-47 was adopted for the hardest conditions: tropical humidity, dirt and pure maintenance.
General Tu Suan Hue, Vietnamese military attaché in Moscow: Then the bulk part of Vietnamese weapons were the American trophies, but when the new AK's have come, the Vietnamese warriors asked to give them this weapon as soon as possible, rejecting the American trophies.
However, the American M-16 had some advances by itself. The 5.56 mm rounds had higher initial velocity. It ensured better accurateness of automatic fire. The lighter rounds also gave the possibility to rise the number of carried ammunition. As an answer, in USSR in early 70th the new 5.45 mm round was invented.
Michael Kalashnikov. Part-3
This is the 3rd part of the Kalashnikov's story.
Kalashnikov: Then I have opposed changing assault rifle caliber from 7.62 to 5.45mm. I have written a number of letters with the explanation, why 7.62x39 mm round must follow to be on service. It is far from exhausting its capabilities. But they started accuse me in 'retrogradeness', 'conservatism' and 'hostility to progress'.
His position was grounded by the fact that the new caliber (5.45x39) has too low penetrating capability against some kinds of targets, while the AKM's bullet (7.62x39) is even penetrating the light armor. However, the constructor could not stand alone and have taken part in the tender for the assault rifle with the new 5.45 mm round. The short list of that tender had two assault rifles: Kalashnikov (AK-74) and Konstantinov (AEK-971 prototype).
Sergey Plotnikov, the senior researcher of the Central Military museum (Russia): The Konstantinov's assault rifle has a prominent shortage. Its reloading needs efforts by more than 5 kg.
In result, the (Army) client preferred Izhevsk's Kalashnikov. March, 18, 1974 the USSR government decided to put the new AK-74 on service. In 5 years it has confirmed its high quality.
Assault Rifle AK-74. Caliber -- 5.45 mm. Mass -- 3.6 kg. Cyclic rate -- 600 rounds in minute. Effective range -- 1000 m.
July 1984. Afghanistan. 23 warriors of KGB 'Kaskad' spec-op unit fall to ambush made by Ben-Laden lead 'Black Stork' terrorist unit. The Islamic terrorists had the old Egypt-made 7.62 mm AKM's, while the Russian spetsnaz had 5.45 mm AK-74's. After the fierce night battle the Russians lost 2 killed and 17 were wounded. The terrorists lost 372 persons.
The Kalashnikov's weapon has confirmed its fantastic reliability in Afghanistan.
Sergey Zhiltsov, the Afghanistan veteran, 1983-87: I saw how quickly our warriors have reload their weapons (AK-74). They threw out the dust and pebbles from their AK's, reloaded them and came back to fire.
In the middle 80th there were more than 100 mln AK's assault rifles in the world. They were on military service of more than 60th countries. The AK design became the world standard, and was learned at all military academies around the world. However, only little was known about Kalashnikov himself.
However, some day Michel Kalashnikov found in his mailbox the letter from an American historian Edward Clinton Ezell. The letter had very short address: 'M. T. Kalashnikov. USSR'.
M. T. Kalashnikov: 'We became good buddies with Ezell. He was the first who wrote a book about it ('The Ak47 Story: Evolution of the Kalashnikov Weapons').
Soon the stories about 'Izhevsk's sergeant , who equipped the whole world' were appeared in a number of western journals. The Army leadership was waken up: the prominent weapon designer was only a major sergeant.
After this event, the 'star drop' was literally fallen on the constructor. 20 years behind the military service M.T.Kalashnikov became an officer (lieutenant). In next some hours he already became a major lieutenant, and after next day he was called to the DM Ustinov's office. Then Ustinov was very angry however, but turned to Kalashnikov 'major'...
When the information was declassified, Kalashnikov became known also as a designer of peaceful stuff. Being himself a hunting fancier, he designed a number of hunting rifles. However, the part of his inventions have no relation to weapon.
Valery Krylov, the Chief manager of the Russian Artillery Museum: One day Kalashnikov invited me to his country house. He said there: 'now you will see my last invention'. I thought of course about a new lethal weapon, but then it was hedgehogs winter lodge.
Michail Timofeyevich (Kalashnikov) doesn't like publicity, and practically says nothing about his private life. Only recently was cleared his old interest to poetry.
M. T. Kalashnikov: Once I was even chosen to a conference of young poets in Kiev. I have written a number of poems, but since my work in weapon design begun, I had no time for lyrics.
Epilogue:
Kalashnikov's assault rifle became not only the most popular weapon around the world, but the symbol of freedom and the great culture phenomenon. Today in Africa the parents often give for their children name 'Kalash' in hope they will inherit the unbeaten durability of the Russian weapon.
Vitaly Babakov, TsNII Tochmash chief engineer: AK is the admitted world reliability standard.
In its 85 jubilee Michail Timofeyevich (Kalashnikov) wrote a message to the future weapon designers. It was capsulated in Izhevsk's weapon museum. It will be opened in 2047, the 100th birthday year of the famous weapon.
M. T. Kalashnikov: I should repeat: no limit for perfection. Thus, I'd be glad to greet those who did better. A constructor should not be limited by only his own work but will see the other's achievements.
The inventor of Kalashnikov. History of Ak-47. Mikhail Kalashnikov.
Russian creator Mikhail Kalashnikov made a standout amongst the most famous firearms ever, the AK-47. This programmed rifle initially appeared in 1947 is as yet being made today.
I made a weapon to safeguard the mother country's fringes. It's not my blame that it was some of the time utilized where it shouldn't have been. This is the blame of lawmakers.
— Mikhail Kalashnikov
