Best way to spend a day in Hakone | Hakone free pass - Round Course
Hakone (箱根) is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, less than one hundred kilometers from Tokyo.
Famous for hot springs, natural beauty and the view across Lake Ashinoko of nearby Mount Fuji, Hakone is one of the most popular destinations among Japanese and international tourists looking for a break from Tokyo.
The Hakone Free Pass by Odakyu Railways is a discount pass for exploring Hakone. It provides unlimited use of Odakyu-affiliated buses, trains, boats, cablecars and ropeways in the Hakone area and discounted admission to selected tourist attractions on two or three consecutive days. Optionally, the pass also includes a discounted round trip from Tokyo's Shinjuku Station.
popular and attractive way of visiting Hakone is by circling the region with five different means of transport (train, cablecar, ropeway, boat and bus), using the Hakone Free Pass.
The round course outlined below starts and ends in Hakone-Yumoto and circles the Hakone region in the counter-clockwise direction. Of course, it is also possible to follow the course in the opposite direction or to start and end somewhere different.
If you leave early in the morning, it is possible to completed the Hakone round course in a one day trip from Tokyo. However, we recommend allocating two days and one night to your visit, preferably with a stay at a ryokan with hot spring baths.

Exploring Komagatake - Mt Hakone Japan
Mt. Komagatake is a 1357-meter high lava dome, created by a Hakone volcanic eruption 40,000 years ago. Almost 2400 years ago, the top of this mountain became a holy precinct for mountain ascetics. They deeply felt a sacred dignity for Mt. Koyama (the highest point of the Hakone Mountain range) and Mt. Fuji beyond it.
In 757 (around the time Priest Ganjin established Toshodai-ji Temple in Nara), Hakone Shrine was established at the Ashinoko lakeside for the purpose of praying to Mt. Koyama. People never climbed Mt. Komagatake except on special, rare occasions because they were afraid. After that, for a long period, people held ceremonies and festivals at the lakeside Hakone Shrine.
This religious practice eventually changed, and in 1964, Yasujiro Tsutsumi, a Japanese politician and businessman (and also the founder of the Saison Group) donated a hall of worship for the top of Mt. Komagatake. Tsutsumi had already helped to successfully develop Hakone as a resort area, so he had a lot of power. The hall was named Hakone Shrine Mototsumiya, and is now admired together with the original lakeside Hakone Shrine.
Komagatake Ropeway
We can reach the top of Mt. Komagatake in only 7 minutes by using a comfortable and convenient ropeway. The ropeway’s lakeside station is at Hakone-en. The total length of the ropeway is 1800 meters, and a return ticket for adults costs 1050 yen. Going up and facing the mountain, you’ll see Mt. Fuji and a chain of Hakone mountains on the left; Odawara, Yokohama, Ohshima Island, and Sagami Bay on the right; and Ashinoko Lake and Suruga Bay behind you. Below you is an afforested area of Japanese cedars halfway up the mountain.
The view from the top
The top of the mountain is covered with undergrowth only. There are no trees, indicating that a lava flow there hardened, and so plants couldn’t grow well. But basically, the paths are well prepared. At the very first, your eye will be captured by red shrine pillars and a red gate against the blue sky. It’s so impressive! If you go left behind the ropeway station, a magnificent Mt. Fuji view is waiting for you. If you go along the path to the right, you will look down a gentle ridge of mountains, and view Sagami Bay and Odawara beyond them.
Then go ahead up to the shrine. Just before the red shrine gate, there is a rock with a sacred straw rope. It is called “Bakou-seki” meaning that God came down on the rock with his white horse. They say there are some holes in it from where the horse stepped. Go and stand in front of the shrine. If you feel something, please feel free to join your hands in prayer before the altar.
You might wonder about some cube-shaped rocks that are scattered around in the back of the shrine. Those rocks had been used for various rituals in the old days. We have a great view of Mt. Fuji from there, and I can imagine that those ceremonies were surely performed under Mt. Fuji’s grace.
Bus journey from Kawaguchiko to Mishima | Wander around Mishima town
After a great time in Kawaguchiko we had to head off to Mishima to get the Bullet Train to Kyoto. There’s not a great deal to do in Mishima but it was a pleasant enough place to visit for a day before getting the train.

Hakone Travel Guide: Day Trip from Tokyo using the Hakone Free Pass | The Travel Intern
Check out our Hakone Travel Guide:
Being in Hakone felt a lot like exploring Disneyland; think pirate ships, old trains that climb mountains and cable ropeways that hover over misty volcanic valleys. The diversity of landscape almost felt almost as though everything was carefully planned and sectioned out into the different worlds like in Disneyland.
Hakone to many locals is also a favourite weekend getaway; an onsen town with great views of Mount Fuji as well as old hiking paths with lined with 400 year old cedar trees.
If that sounds like your kind of getaway — even if it’s just a quick detour from Tokyo — here’s our guide to a fuss-free day trip in Hakone.
Get your Hakone Free Pass:
0:14 - Hakone Jinjo Shrine
0:19 - Hakone Shrine & Torri of Peace
One of the most iconic symbols of Hakone is the grand Torii gate that sits on the edge of Lake Ashinoko. Probably more famous than the shrine itself as it takes a bit of climbing to get to.
0:23 - Hakone Tozan Bus
0:26 - hakone Checkpoint
0:35 - Ancient Cedar Avenue
One of the best preserved parts of old Hakone. A 500m path lined with tall cedar trees used during the Edo period where travellers mainly walked on foot between Tokyo and Kyoto.
0:45 - Hakone Sightseeing Cruise
0:49 - Lake Ashinoko
Heart of Hakone and one of the 5 famous lakes in the Fuji-izu region. You might even see Mount Fuji on a clear day.
0:54 - Hakone Ropeway
Scenic ropeway towards Owakudani
1:00 - Owakudani
Also known as the Valley of Hell with the volcanic gasses and ponds created during the eruption of Mount Hakone.
1:13 - Hakone Tozan Cable Car
1:18 - Odawara Castle
15th century castle — a famous spot for its cherry blossoms in late March to April.
