Japan is planning to upgrade at least on of its ships to an aircraft carrier in preparation for a procurement of around 100 U.S. F-35 stealth fighter jets to counter Chinese military expansion in the Pacific.
According to the Guardian, Japan plans to upgrade its two Izumo-class helicopter carriers to transport and launch fighter jets.
The Nikkei News Service reported that Japan was set to purchase 100 F-35s from the U.S. in a deal worth more than US$8.8 billion.
According to CNN, the package includes F-35 A and B models. F-35As are similar to conventional fighter jets that use a runway for take off and landing.
F-35Bs have short take off and vertical landing capability, meaning they can be used at smaller airports or operate from flattop warships.
Japan's Izumo-class carrier is 814 meters long and can carry up to 14 helicopters.
According to former US Navy captain and current Hawaii Pacific University Professor Carl Schuster telling CNN, a refitted Japanese carrier would only be able to carry six to eight F-35Bs.
According to Mainichi Shimbun, the carriers would be used to defend Japan's remote south-western islands.

JMSDF (Japanese Navy) Museum, Kure, April 8, 2012
Just 25 minutes by local train from Hiroshima is the city of Kure. It is an industrial city with several ship yards. It has been so for many years, and many of the battleships that participated in WWII were build here.
The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) have today a new and modern museum in Kure with a very large submarine in front of the museum. The museum is especially dedicated to mine sweeping and submarines.
After WWII Japan's coastal waters were saturated with mines dropped by US planes. So the first task of the postwar Japanese navy was to clear those mines. As a result today the JMSDF are among the best in the world of clearing mines.
The JMSDF Museum, Kure, is located 3 minutes' walk from the Yamato Museum, that is also worth a visit. Both museums are very close to the train station and ridiculously easy to find from the station.

The House of the Chaste Lovers - Open for Valentine's Day
It could be the perfect place to spend Valentine's Day.
The House of the Chaste Lovers, named after a fresco on the site, opens in the ancient town of Pompeii in southern Italy this weekend - but only until and including February 14.
Then it will close to allow restoration work to continue as part of a multi-million euro preservation project for Pompeii.
