Izushi, Hyogo | Japan Travel Guide
Izushi ( 出石 )
Description
————————————————————————
Izushi is a castle town in a mountain valley in northern Hyogo Prefecture. Visitors can see examples of an ancient townscape including the surviving samurai residences from the Edo Era and the townhouses constructed in the early 20th century. In addition to the Shinkoro Clock Tower built in 1871 at Yaguradai and the Eirakudan playhouse built in 1901, there are many other highlights such as the Izushi Karoh Yashiki which is the former residence of a high-ranking samurai.

The remains of Izushi Castle (出石城) & Inari Shrine, Izushi, Hyogo, Japan
Although Izushi castle no longer actually exists, you can visit an Inari Shrine, built on the old foundations of the castle near the now restored yagura (turrets). There are supposedly 37 torii and 157 stone steps leading up to it ~ although I can't say I counted them at the time!

但馬国一宮・兵庫県・出石神社 (Izushi Shrine)
Izushi Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the west of Toyooka in Hyōgo Prefecture in Japan.
Izushi was designated as the chief Shinto Shrine (ichinomiya) for the former Tajima province. Amenohiboko is enshrined.
A passage in the nihongi from the reign of Emperor Suinin mentions the divine treasures of Izushi (Izushi no kandakara) brought to Japan by Ame no hihoko.
From 1871 through 1946, Izushi Shrine was officially designated one of the Kokuhei Chūsha, meaning that it stood in the mid-range of ranked, nationally significant shrines.

Izushi (often referred to as Little Kyoto) was our first sightseeing stop on the way to Kinosaki Onsen Village in Hyogo.
The famous Shinkoro clocktower at Izushi (the Tower of the Dragon Drums) is a traditional Japanese wooden clock tower built during the Meiji era; it now serves as the symbol of the town and can be found on just about every souvenir as well as on the town's manhole covers!

Our Visit to Izushi (Castle Town) Japan
Izushi is a little town best known for their 5 plates per order style fresh Soba noodles. We made the 2 hour bus commute (round trip) to come here because Mr. Lau REALLY likes Soba. To my surprise, I also loved it! The packaged stuff we get in North America has a rough texture, the noodles there, so smooth! At the end of your meal, the restaurant gives you a generous portion of soba broth so you can mix it with your dipping sauce and finish with a soothing warm soup. What a great way to balance the cold noodles. DELISH!
During our short visit, we took some shots and videos around town, checked out a few iconic stops and visited many souvenir stores. It was a short but rewarding stop. Well worth the 2 hr bus ride. :)
As this is my first slideshow, i apologize for all the amateur mistakes ahead of time. Join us on our short stop to Castle Town!

Japan Travel: Onsenji Temple Mt. Daishi Kinosaki Onsen, Hyogo, Japan
[061] hyogo onsenji temple
Subscribe link :
At the western end of town along a mountain slope stands Onsenji Temple, literally meaning hot spring temple. This temple is dedicated to a Buddhist saint who, according to legend, prayed for 1000 days for spring water to Kinosaki.
In the old days, visitors had to first visit the temple before being admitted to any of the baths in town. While most people no longer visit Onsenji before bathing, the temple remains to be a nice place to pay a visit to.
Onsenji's main treasure is a two meter tall, eleven headed Kannon Buddha which is on display to the public in its entirety only once every 33 years over a period of three years (next opportunity: April 23, 2018 to April 24, 2021). A partial glimpse of the statue can be caught annually on April 23rd and 24th during the Onsen Matsuri.

Kinosaki- Japan`s best hot spring town- presents its innovative Artist in Residence program
In April 2014, Kinosaki International Art Center was opened in Kinosaki town.
A facility at the forefront of artistic residencies, the building consists of halls, studios and accommodation.
It provides not only a space for showcasing performing arts, but also for the artists to stay and create their work in Kinosaki.
Kinosaki Onsen is known as a town where the famous novel “At Kinosaki” was written by the great writer, Naoya Shiga.
100 years have already passed since it was written. The novelist Manabu Makime stayed in Kinosaki Onsen and wrote a new short novel.
The ‘Eirakukan’ is a 113 year old playhouse in the castle town, Izushi. It was renovated and started to be reused in 2008. Kabuki has been performed there every year since.
The town of Toyooka is the scene of these modern artistic activities which blend the traditional with the new.
