'Hiketa/Aioi' Wind-waiting Harbor

At the easternmost edge of Higashikagawa (“East Kagawa”) City is Hiketa/Aioi, a small community of about 7,000. Coastal trading and fisheries made the harbor town prosperous, allowing development of soy sauce & sake manufacturing as well. People waited anxiously for the winds to bring ships into the harbor, and that is why it was called “Wind-waiting Harbor.” Adoike Lagoon, where the world’s first successful yellowtail aquaculture was developed. Nationally-beloved Wasanbon gourmet sugar is also still produced here. And of course you can enjoy delicious Sanuki undon noodles. The thriving local fishery continues to bring the gifts of the peaceful inland sea to our tables. Soy sauce produced using the traditional “mushiro” method, unchanged since the Edo Period. Treasures from the gallant past persist in quieter form. Soy-sauce flavored pizza, abundant aquaculture yellowtail, and our up-and-coming local caviar. Take a walk through our old town into the past where the nostalgia can ignite a light in your heart.
