Rainy Yakushima. Where shall we go? [4K]
During our stay in Yakushima, a large typhoon approaches. All flights and ships are canceled.
Are we going to leisurely pass our time at the inn today? Even though that’s fine, it is getting a little boring.
So we go to the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center, the tourist information center in Miyanoura (a town in Yakushima) to check, and it seems like there’s one walking course at Shiratani Unsuikyo Forest (about 30 minutes from Miyanoura where you can drive up a mountain) that is still partially open.
Yakushima 屋久島 hiking (Princess Mononoke forest) - Exploring Japan with Wageofsins!
The mountains of Yakushima (屋久島), a southern island of Kagoshima (鹿児島県), are home to lush forests thousands of years old. Perhaps most famous as the inspiration for the magical forests in the Ghibli hit anime Princess Mononoke, these trails criss-cross the island, drawing in travelers from around the world. These moss covered paths take several days to complete and are home to wild monkeys and deer. This is just a small sample of an afternoon of hiking we did during a visit in August 2016. To get to Yakushima you can either take a flight straight there, or take the ferry from Kagoshima, which you see at the beginning of this video.

Yakushima (屋久島) is one of the Ōsumi Islands belonging to Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The island, 504.88 km² in area, has a population of 13,178. Access to the island is by hydrofoil ferry (7 or 8 times a day from Kagoshima, depending on the season), slow car ferry (once or twice a day from Kagoshima), or by air to Yakushima Airport (3 to 5 times daily from Kagoshima, once daily from Fukuoka and once daily from Osaka). Administratively, the whole island is the town of Yakushima. The town also serves neighbouring Kuchinoerabujima. The majority of the island is within the borders of the Kirishima-Yaku National Park.
Yakushima's electricity is more than 50% hydroelectric, and surplus power has been used to produce hydrogen gas in an experiment by Kagoshima University. The island has been a test site for Honda's hydrogen fuel cell vehicle research. (There are no hydrogen cars stationed on the island but electric cars are run by the municipality.)
In 1980 an area of 18,958 ha was designated a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve. In 1993, 10 hectares of wetland at Nagata-hama was designated a Ramsar Site. It is the largest nesting ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle in the North Pacific. Yakushima's unique remnant of warm/temperate ancient forest has been a natural World Heritage Site since 1993. In the Wilderness core area (12.19 square kilometres (3,010 acres)) of the World Heritage Site, no record of past tree cutting can be traced. The island is visited by 300,000 tourists every year.
Yakushima has been settled since at least the Jomon period. It is first mentioned in written documents of the Chinese Sui Dynasty of the 6th century, and in the Japanese Shoku Nihongi in an entry dated 702. It formed part of ancient Tane Province. It was often mentioned in the diaries of travellers between Tang Dynasty China and Nara period Japan. During the Edo period, Yakushima was ruled by the Shimazu clan of the Satsuma Domain and was considered part of Ōsumi Province. Following the Meiji restoration, the island has been administered as part of Kagoshima Prefecture.

Yakushima contains one of the largest tracts of existing Nansei Islands subtropical evergreen forests, and endangered habitat ecoregion.there are some remaining areas of primary forest, composed mainly of a variety of Cryptomeria japonica, or Japanese cedar, known as yakusugi (屋久杉), whose age exceeds 1000 years.
The Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine has Mononoke no Mori (苔むす森) which became a model of the stage of the ghibli movie Princess Mononoke published in 1997.

Yakushima Island lies south of Kagoshima in Southern Kyushu. Unlike surrounding volcanic islands, Yakushima is a solidified magma core which was uplifted so fast, natural weathering barely made an impression in the Island's solid granite rock. Consequently, Yakushima is home to the world's oldest Cedar forest with Jomon Sugi though to be about 7000 years old. Yakushima Cedar is highly regarded in Japan for Temple repair and maintenance so Japan's last operating narrow gauge cedar tramway, the Arakawa Forest Railway is kept in operational condition. Not only does the railway still transport Cedar for special orders, the trackway is preserved as a popular walking track for intrepid walkers wanting to experience Jomon Sugi and Yakushima's World Heritage Listed Hinoki forest.

400 years old cedar trees near Toyko Japan | Historic Japan | Hakone
Near Tokyo you will find an avenue of historic 400 years old cedar trees. Located in Hakone, Japan the avenue of 400 year old cedar trees are remnants of a supply trail used during ancient Japan times.
The historical avenue of Japanese Cedar Trees is a long trail connecting in Hakone. Located near Lake Ashi it connects Moto-Hakone to Onshi Hakone Park. The trees are around 400 years old. They were planted along the trail to protect travelers from the cold wind and the strong sun. The lines of trees which exist today are designated as a National Historic Site. It’s one of the most well known places in Hakone and one where you can still imagine what it was like on the old Tokaido Road.
Cedar ave. of Hakone Old Tokaido Road is a great historic pass located in Hakone on the side of Lake Ashi. About 500m between Motohakone town to Onshi-Hakone Park, there is a beautiful Cedar ave.
Cedar trees were planted by Matsudaira Masatsun in 1618. Those 400 Cedar trees are over 400 years old now and still remains the great view of Tokaido as it was used to be.
Cedar avenue of Hakone Old Tokaido Road is one of the great historic site of Tokaido Road. It was built in 1619 by Tokugawa Ieyasu. These Cedar are also planted by Tokugawa Ieyasu. He planted to provide the shade to the travelers. There are 420 cedar trees still remains. Many famous Samurai used this road to travel between Edo and Osaka. The view of this road is still preserved in a great condition. You can enjoy strolling the pass of Japanese history. .

A rainy night at the most authentic guest house in Japan (Yakushima/屋久島)
Yakushima hiking - day 1 Yodogawa to Aragawa
The lot of us, 10 strong, had come from Hong Kong to this island, Yakushima, situated to the south of Kagoshima, Japan, with a view especially to hike.
On the first day of hiking we divided the group into 2 teams, A of 3 and B of 7 persons, to tackle 2 different routes. This video was taken by a member of team A.
We set out at 5 am, taking a taxi to arrive at the trailhead 26 km from our minshuku. From there we set off on foot, passing Hananoego, to reach the island’s highest peak, Miyanoura-Dake, at 1936 meter, from where we began our descent to the famed Jomon-sugi, the 7,000-year-old cypress. After we cleared the last of the mountain trails we followed the railway track to walk on, meeting up with team B and finishing the hike at Aragawa trailhead.
In all Team A covered a distance of 24 km in 11.5 hours, ½ hour more than as planned. As we ascended and descended from the peak, we were heavily impeded by ice having formed on the paths going up and down, thereby causing much delay. It did not help that one of us, the videographer himself no less, was feeling less than well. Fortunately, given the slipperiness of the trail, the worst injury that we sustained was but a few scrapes. And what a magnificent day it was, for us to be able to admire the mesmerizing sights of the mountains and streams along the trail under a rare, sunny sky.
Team B took another taxi to set out an hour later at 6am to arrive at Aragawa trailhead at 7am, followed the railway track to Jomon-sugi, where they doubled-back to return to the trailhead, finishing the hike in 10 ½ hours.
Teams A and B rejoined each other towards the end of the hike on the railway track and together we arrived at the Aragawa trailhead, where the same 2 taxis were already dutifully awaiting us.
