Cowboy Bedroll
In this 1979 video, Clay Taylor at the Black Ridge Camp, somewhere in the United States, is folding up his bedding in a commercially made canvas cover designed to protect his bedding while it is on the ground or in transit.
Most cowboy bedrolls, like the one in this video, were made and sold by small regional companies like J.M. Capriola Company of Elko, Nevada, which was and still is a leading supplier of cowboy gear in the United States.
In Capriola's 1982 catalogue, the Cowboy `Bed Roll' Tarp is described as “a seventeen by seven foot piece of 15 ounce, untreated canvas.” The tarp was then priced at $77.50, with leather straps costing an extra $19.” [US Dollars]
The same bedroll canvas is now priced by the very same company at $125, with the added straps a further $35, or a complete cowboy bedroll - with a covered foam mattress - can now be purchased for $255 US Dollars.
In this video Clay Taylor can be seen repacking his bedroll which included a mattress, a sleeping bag, a blanket, and a cow hide.
Such bedding can be used while the canvas itself is un-clipped flat on the ground, partially folded to protect bedding from the rain, or almost fully clipped up to provide added warmth and protection.
Also, take note of the fact that he ultimately folded and not rolled the bedroll, which is sometimes the practice here in Australia when a bedroll is carried on horse back in order to create a flatter more contoured profile.

Anchor/reporter Bill Brown, Producer Samantha Szesciorka, and Photographer/editor Jeff Foss spent four days and traveled over 900 miles through the great state of Nevada, to collect these stories. Once back, they were aided by Ann Burns, John Cruz, and Daniella Chinnici in producing the final stories. Road tripping Nevada’s Cowboy Corridor
Ambrotype photographer Giles Clement set out on a road trip along Nevada's Cowboy Corridor to capture special portraits. Throughout each stage of the journey, he met people whose traditions and heritage were deeply rooted to the landscape of the American West.
Take Cottonwood Ranch, an off-grid guest ranch where the next generation of conservationists are helping people learn about land stewardship. Or Elko’s J.M. Capriola Co., a mutli-generation family-owned custom saddle shop, where every hand-tooled leather good is so legendary, the moment it comes out of the shop it's already considered an heirloom.
From the Jarbidge Mountains to the Unionville foothills, Clement's subjects shared their heritage and personal stories, which continue through to the next generation. Come see for yourself how Nevada’s Cowboy Corridor road trip route takes you straight into the heart of the Silver State's piece of the American West.

Elko, NV - Day 1 of the trip
We come across a rodeo in Elko. It is not dog-friendly. I end up hanging out with Max and chatting with some teenagers loitering near the front gates. We watch a cute cop and head back to the hotel.
