Exploring Croom Ghost Town in Withlacoochee State Forest (Part One)
Journey with me into the old town of Croom from the early 1900's in Hernando County, Florida. The area has a rich history and today is part of Croom Wildlife Management Area or Withlacoochee State Forest. You can read about some of the history here:
There are many trails and places to roam in this forest. It is important to note that metal detecting, digging and removing artifacts is prohibited and illegal on state and public lands. Please be respectful of the history that remains, thank you!

Florida Ghost Town Brewster’s Abandoned Power Plant
Brewster is a ghost town in southwest Polk County, Florida, United States, ten miles south of Mulberry. It is at an elevation of 143 feet above sea level and has been uninhabited since the early 1960s. The village of Brewster was founded in 1910 and for decades flourished from phosphate mining. It was largely a company town for American Cyanamid. The town had its own schools, movie theater, medical clinic, post office, which was established in 1913 and discontinued in 1961, and swimming pool.
The inventor of the digital computer, John Vincent Atanasoff, though born in Hamilton, New York, grew up in Brewster.
The village was officially closed down by the company in 1962. Much of Brewster was demolished at the time, but some abandoned buildings remain, including a smokestack which rises prominently in the area as a landmark. The deed to Brewster was turned over to the state of Florida in partial payment of a judgment against American Cyanamid for environmental damages.

The Search for Lost Indian Mounds
This time, I was Invited to join Florida Trailblazer and 21st Century Expeditionist on a Indian Mound discovery excursion. After the first and more exposed mound we tromped through thick and tangled mesic hammocks and deep swamps full of venomous snakes and biting flies. We finally came across what looked remarkably like a dug out canoe that may have been associated with the midden mound just 10 yards from where it lay, collapsed and half buried in the mud. We explored the mound and found amazing artifacts from arrowheads to textured pottery shards. The adventure was real and exciting. I am grateful they invited me along on this epic trek and look forward to joining them again.
