Yangon to Bagan By Bus | JJ Express VIP Overnight Coach, Myanmar
There are multiple ways to get from Yangon to Bagan — bus, train or plane. Considering cost, convenience, and duration, going from Yangon to Bagan by bus is the undeniable winner. Short daily flights within Myanmar are available, but are astronomically priced. Nope. The train is the cheapest option, but takes a hellish 17 hours. No thanks. Several bus companies run overnight between the two regions, costing just over $20 USD per person and last a mild 9 hours. We’ll take it.
We decided to go from Yangon to Bagan by JJ Express Overnight Coach, a popular VIP Luxury Bus operator that features reclining seats, AC, a (strange) complimentary snack box, and a HUGE list of American movies. We’ve come to love our overnight bus rides. :)

Hi friends! We’re Braden & Taylor, a newlywed couple from California living with a BAD case of the travel bug. In Fall 2018, we quit our jobs, sold our belongings, and packed two tiny suitcases to find out what it truly means to live life to the fullest. First and foremost, we vlog for ourselves — our channel is a living picture book of the memories we collect over the next months and years around the globe, traveling to over 60 countries by 2020. If there’s a place we haven’t been, it’s on our list!
Secondly, we document our life on the road for family, friends and strangers alike — if our videos help pass on the travel influenza, then we’ve done our job. ???? We don’t know where this trip will take us, but we promise to ourselves and to you that we will always present both the beautiful and the ugly, because no trip is perfect, and neither is our world. Don’t be shy — send us a shout out when we’re in your area, and be sure to subscribe + hit the bell to be notified of future videos!

I took Khaing Mandalay Express - Day VIP Bus (9:30AM) from Yangon to Mandalay.
This video is for potential foreign tourists who’s interested to take bus between Yangon and Mandalay so they know what to expect.
The whole journey took about 9hr including two rest stops along the way. The VIP ticket price is 2,1000Ks per person. The VIP or Business class as some bus operators called is 2+1 seating arrangements. The normal bus is 2+2. I did not make advanced booking, just walked in. The bus was half-occupied. Night buses tend to be more crowded. So you might want to book ahead. There are now websites where you can make advanced booking and check timings.
They issued a ticket with your seat numbers for the luggages you keep in the storage below.
The car is fitted with individual LCD screen for entertainment and wifi. Its not like the airlines’ movie & music collections, But good enough to keep yourself entertained along the way. They serve bread buns and rolls, an orange can drink, a water bottle and a wet towel on board. There is a blanket provided for every seat.
The first stop is at 115mile mark near Phyu. As it only stops for 30min, you have to make sure to keep track of your time and your bus number/color. There are a couple of restaurants lining up and street vendors nearby. Our bus stopped at “Feel Restaurant”. The toilets there are in good cleaned condition. I had Burmese meal with fish and kailan (adds-on) for lunch.
The second stop is at 285mile mark, near Meikhtila. Its just 10min for the toilet break. You just go to one of the restaurant’s back to access the washroom. The amenities and environment here are very similar to 115mile stop.
We approached Mandalay around 6PM after the darkness set in. The highway bus station at Mandalay is also called Kywal Sel Kan Station. Some operators provide shuttle service from the station to the city area. You can check with the bus operator you are taking. The recommended way to get in touch is by phone. Otherwise, try Facebook as most business in Myanmar rely on FB.

Myanmar Sleeper Train from Mandalay to Yangon
Follow Us as we share with you a highlight of our Myanmar adventure - taking the sleeper train operated by Myanmar Railways!
Upon checking out of our transit hotel, Hotel Marvel, we proceeded to Platform 1 at the Mandalay train station just below our hotel. The friendly hotel bellboy was nice enough to help porter our bags to the platform. Really appreciate that warm gesture.
Our journey on Sleeper Train Number 4 to Yangon from Mandalay took us about 18 hours. The normal duration was about 16 hours. However, the train we took was delayed by about 2 hours.
We booked ourselves 2 bunk beds in the sleeper cabin with the assistance of a local tour agency. We made a special request for the agency to help us secure the one and only sleeper cabin with 2 bunk beds, for the convenience of vlogging. (The rest of the sleeper cabins have 4 bunk beds.)
The journey en-route was an interesting, albeit a rather bumpy one. We were treated with many scenes of country life in Myanmar. Farmers ploughing their plots with the aid of water buffalos, children playing in the river, locals looking forlorn as they sat at the train station waiting for their loved ones perhaps, enterprising locals peddling food and other necessities as our train made pit-stops at various stations en-route, and so much more!
It was all in all an interesting journey, which helped shed some light on the way of life in the countryside of this wonderful country. Though tiring, we enjoyed the train ride very much.
Would you consider getting on board a train operated by Myanmar Railways as your preferred mode of commute across the country? Let us know what you think in the comments section below! :D
