JMSDF (Japanese Navy) Museum, Kure, April 8, 2012
Just 25 minutes by local train from Hiroshima is the city of Kure. It is an industrial city with several ship yards. It has been so for many years, and many of the battleships that participated in WWII were build here.
The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) have today a new and modern museum in Kure with a very large submarine in front of the museum. The museum is especially dedicated to mine sweeping and submarines.
After WWII Japan's coastal waters were saturated with mines dropped by US planes. So the first task of the postwar Japanese navy was to clear those mines. As a result today the JMSDF are among the best in the world of clearing mines.
The JMSDF Museum, Kure, is located 3 minutes' walk from the Yamato Museum, that is also worth a visit. Both museums are very close to the train station and ridiculously easy to find from the station.
You should check out the website of the museum (in English with some information...):

Just 25 minutes by local train from Hiroshima is the city of Kure. It is an industrial city with several ship yards. It has been so for many years, and many of the battleships that participated in WWII were build here.
To commemorate this great legacy within ship building the city has build an almost new museum (2005) that covers both the pre-war and WWII period but also modern day ship industry.
By far the best thing to see at the museum is the incredible, beautifully made 1:10 (!) scale model of the Battleship Yamato. Just next to the model is a new and quite big special exhibition covering the design of this the world largest battleship ever build.
Some other things from WWII can also be seen at the museum, such as a Zero fighter and a Long Lance type 95 torpedo.
The video contains still pictures and HD video from the museum. Again I had too little time at the museum - only a little more than 1 hour due to we had to catch a ferry to Matsuyama. The ferry terminal is just next to the museum.

Note that just 3 minutes' walk from the museum is the museum for the JMSDF (Japanese Navy).

JMSDF Kure Museum is not only there for the public to enjoy and learn about minesweeping and submarine operations in Japan but also to educate Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) personnel.
Visitors can access the decommissioned 76m-long Akishio SS-579 submarine which was launched in Kobe in 1985 and served until 2004.

Yamato Museum in Kure City, Japan (大和ミュージアム)
Yamato was the biggest battleship ever built and was built by Japan in 1941. On the terrace a nice view of the kure city shipyard could be observed where they built the Yamato and her sister ship the Musashi. Photos:
There was a scale model present which is a 1/10 scale. It is amazing to how many gun turrets and anti aircraft guns it houses. It is remarkable that the united states was able to sink it of the coast of kyushu the most western Japanese island by an air attack. It seems impenetrable to me.
Specs of the Yamato: Yamato's main battery consisted of nine 18.1-inch 40 cm/45 Type 94 naval guns—the largest caliber of naval artillery ever fitted to a warship. Each gun was 21.13 metres (69.3 ft) long, weighed 147.3 metric tons (162.4 short tons), and was capable of firing high-explosive or armour-piercing shells 42.0 kilometres (26.1 mi).

Japan Trip: Spring 2017 | Vlog #10 | Yamato Museum (Kure Maritime Museum) & Kanazawa
Welcome to the tenth episode of my Japan Trip 2017 vlog series.
This episode Itchy and Rodier head over to the Yamato Museum a.k.a Kure Maritime Museum in Kure City (Hiroshima Prefecture) to look at the WWII Battleship Yamato. Later that afternoon, they move on to their next hotel in Kanazawa. During the following 2 days, they explore the city and visit places such as Kanazawa castle and the Nagamachi Samurai district.
Rodier's a Pokemon GO master this episode...
We were in Japan from 30th March 2017 - 4th May 2017. Expect plenty of videos! If you ever wish to visit Japan, I highly recommend getting a Japan Rail Pass. With this Rodier and I were able to travel via JR Trains & Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to a great amount of places throughout Japan as many times as we wanted with no extra cost.
