JR Kii-Tanabe Station: Kumano Kodo How-to Series
The JR Kii-Tanabe station is a small rural train station in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. It is the entrance way to the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes. Kumano Kodo: How-to Series.
JR kiitanabe Train Station, Wakayama Prefecture
JR Kiitanabe Train Station is a sleepy little train station on the JR Kinokuni line that goes from Wakayama City to Shingu in the Kii Peninsula of Wakayama Prefecture.
Kiitanabe is famous for the Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine, which is one of the three sacred shrines of the Kumano Sanzen of the Kumano Kodo (Kumano Ancient Road, which is a old pilgrimage route from Kumano to Kyoto). Kumano Kodo is recognized as by the UNESCO World Heritage site. Also, a good stretch of the old Kumano Kodo still exists from Kiitanabe towards Wakayama City. Unfortunately the Shrine is about two hour bus ride, so if you are planning to visit the shrine, please get there early.
Enjoy!!

Wakayama, Japan: Day 1
You've probably never heard of Wakayama Prefecture in Japan. However, it's one of the bigger prefectures on Honshu, the main island. Wakayama is known for its many traditional castles, temples, shrines and onsen (hot springs). The coastal cities' beaches are a huge tourist attraction, and Wakayama City boasts a prestigious university and home to many company jobs.
My grandfather was born and raised in Susami, Wakayama. In 1961, when he was only 19 years old, he left Japan for the U.S. He came to Los Angeles, started a family and never looked back. He did not keep in contact with his brothers he left behind, and the only time he returned was in 1990, nearly 30 years later, when his mother became ill.
I never knew my family from Wakayama. I don't know who or where they are.I always felt like that part of my heritage was missing. So when I was offered a trip by the Wakayama International Exchange Association (WIXAS), I immediately accepted. I hope to not only learn more about my Japanese heritage, but also the life my grandfather left behind more than 50 years ago.

Japan Travel: Things to Do, Explore and Experience in Wakayama Prefecture 29
Wakayama Prefecture is located to the south of Osaka. The capital of the prefecture is Wakayama City.
Wakayama Prefecture has many places for visitors to enjoy and explore. The best known tourist attraction is Mount Koya (Koyasan), the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism. Visitors who wish to experience an overnight stay at a temple can experience one here.
In addition to the overnight stay at the temple, visitors approach Koyasan to explore the Kumano Kodo, an ancient network of trials used by pilgrims to visit temples. The Kumano Sanzan, Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha and the Kumano Nachi Taisha are also well visited in this area.
In addition to these spiritual experiences, visitors also come to Wakayama to enjoy the hot springs this region boasts. The Shirahama area is one of the top three onsen (hot springs) resort areas in Japan. Numerous onsen, including one of the oldest onsen in Japan, Saki-no-Yu, is in this area. Shirahama is also famous for its white sandy beach and famous rock formations, including Engetsu Island.
Children will be delighted to visit Adventure World with all its animals and rides. This park is famous for their twin pandas, and visitors will enjoy learning more about our Chinese animal friends here. In addition to the cuddly pandas, visitors can enjoy an African Safari, dolphin and other sea life show. There is a “feel” interaction area as well.
Wakayama Prefecture is blessed with nature, history, spirituality, and fun for all.

Hello Everyone!
I went to Wakayama! ( ノ^ω^)ノ゚ My university organised a day trip to Wakayama where we did traditional lacquer ware work, explored a small town called kuroe (黒江), and visited the beautiful Kimiidera-shrine (紀三井寺).
The whole trip was a lot of fun and I will definitely be heading back soon!

- English subtitles available -
Wakayama, a very nice town on the Kansai coast.
About 1 hour by train from Osaka, Wakayama remains spared from mass tourism.
A real little haven of peace whose inhabitants are very welcoming.
The sea and the mountain on both sides of the city, only reinforce its charm.
Kimiidera is a Buddhist temple where the Zen spirit takes on its full meaning. Tranquility, fullness, harmony, you will come out soothed and serene.
Wakayama Castle is one of the main tourist spots to visit in town. From the top, you can admire the whole city, as well as the sea and the mountains.
The kuroshio fish market, located at the Wakayama marina, is a must to realize the richness of Japanese food. We can also witness the cutting show of tuna and salmon, another facet of Japanese culture.
Finally, do not follow the maps any more and over the course of your walks you will discover rather unusual places such as restaurants with a special character.
Welcome to Wakayama!
Takinohai Waterfall - Wakayama - 滝ノ拝
Located in the center of the Wakayama mountainside, Takinohai (Taki No Hai) is an impressive bedrock river channel and waterfall. The myriad of potholes, both large and small, that dot the riverbed and surrounding rocks have been created over centuries of natural erosion by small stones washed downstream boring holes in the rock. And if you happen to be a fan of fishing, join the locals during summertime and try and catch some tasty sweetfish!
