DODI TABBAA 2013
DODI TABBAA
THE PIXEL LIGHTBOX SOCIETY
An experience with pixels and light
19th May to 2 June 2013
Under the patronage of HRH Princess Sarvath El Hassan, Dodi Tabbaa's latest exhibition uses the geometry of pixels, to create a luminous exhibition of prints that glow with almost neon shades of energy and enhanced color lighting up each square, giving each an individual burst of an aura-like beam.
Revisiting her exploration with pop art, Tabbaa takes her work to a new level of by referencing digital pixels, LED lighting and high definition effects . Dodi admits influence from Japanese video games, especially from the artist Keiji Inafune, but there are other references as well, to the classic colour theorists and op artists of the 20th century such as Johann Itten, Josef Albers or Victor Vasareley and Dan Flavin.
Dodi explores the effects of perception though the illusion of movement across space and the interaction of adjacent colours, in some works imagining additional environments through over-stamping, where fish swim in pixilated seas with dappled light, or birds shelter in an oasis in the desert.
The effects of modulation and tonal variation across the geometric forms are vibrant, colourful and enhanced by the inference of light from within.

Former camera box photographer reflects on life behind the lens
Yahia al-Milh's world was once seen through the lens of his box camera.
The 70-year old now sells and repairs rosaries in Amman, but he has not parted with what he calls his, life partner.
Only twenty years ago Yahia al-Milh was still snapping black and white shots with his box camera.
Photography was not just a job for Abu Mohammad; it was a passion and a vocation.
Originally from the Gaza Strip, 70-year-old al-Milh now lives in Amman, where he sells and repairs rosaries.
But he was once at the forefront of photography - or box photography.
He is considered the oldest and the last box camera photographer in Jordan.
But as technology evolved and modern cameras became widespread, he gave up the craft.
At the time, his health condition didn't allow him to continue working in the field of street photography.
That was twenty years ago, when he chose a new career: selling and repairing rosaries.
As a sign of admiration and pride for his former craft, al-Milh carries his box camera to the rosary stall each day, and sets it facing the main al-Husseini mosque in downtown Amman.
He talks of the box camera with loving affection:
We were around 17 box camera photographers working in front of Al-Husseini mosque, most of them have passed away, the rest of them are staying home because of sickness and others have changed their professions, so thank God I stay alone, me and this camera, which I love, my life partner.
As he repairs rosaries, customers and foreigners admire the historic device.
Giselle Wansa is visiting from Australia.
I think it's been an amazing pleasure meeting the oldest photographer in Jordan, to actually see that camera and see its history and its origins out of Gaza, its been a pleasure to see his passion ooze out and to get to know a little bit about his purpose, its been great, she says.
al-Milh says he inherited his career from his father who was a box camera photographer in the Gaza Strip.
After his father's death, al-Milh and his brother continued to work in this profession.
Following the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, al-Milh fled to Jordan, bringing his box camera with him and continuing his work in Amman.
He says the photography business was profitable at the time.
So much so that it helped him support his 10 family members and to buy a small house in a refugee camp, he says.
The first income from his work in Jordan on the first day only was 6.5 piasters (9.1 US dollars).
At that time it was a great income, he says.
Darweesh al-Barghouthi is also 70 years old and, like al-Milh, originally from the Gaza Strip.
He says that al-Milh was the best photographer around.
I have known Abu Mohammad for 40 years, I still remember him and another photographer, his name is Zakariah. These cameras used to be functional here (in Amman) and the West Bank, I used to get photos by these camera, and I still keep the photos until now.
He shows al-Milh a photograph that he still keeps in his wallet.
al-Milh says that his camera was made sometime between 1930 and 1940.
A Japanese-made body, American-made lens and a Syrian-made wood box, it's still functioning today.
al-Milh refuses to sell it as he says its value is priceless.
