Jack's Rake & The Langdale Pikes, Lake District - 31 August 2014
The route is just over 7 miles long. Initially starting from Rossett Bridge the route heads to Stickle Ghyll and climbs up to Stickle Tarn. From here the route follows around the tarn to Pavey Ark and the start of Jack's Rake. Climbing Jack's Rake the path then heads over to Thunacar Knott. From here the summits of Harrison Stickle and Loft Crag follow before the partial descent of Stickle Stone Chute to the cave containing evidence of Neolithic Axe making. Climbing back up the scree chute and onto Pike of Stickle the route then descends along Troughton Beck before returning along Mickelden.

Jake's Rake (or Jack's Rake) & The Langdale Pikes, Lake District - 6 November 2011
Leaving Langdale Valley we followed Stickle Ghyll to Stickle Tarn below Pavey Ark. From here we skirted around the Tarn to the base of Pavey Ark and the Grade 1 scramble of Jake's Rake. After climbing Jake's Rake we then walked to Harrison Stickle, Pike of Stickle and finally Loft Crag before descending via Dungeoin Ghyll and the valley floor. The walk was carried out in the unseasonal warmth on 6 November 2011. Music by Running up the Hill - Placebo, Biffy Clyro - Mountain, Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows & Foo Fighters - Big Me.
Britain's Mountain Challenges: Jack's Rake
Trail magazine and the British Mountaineering Council present Britain's Mountain Challenges.
In this video Trail magazine's Dan Aspel tackles Jack’s Rake, an ever-popular slanting scramble in the heart of one of the Lake District’s most appealing valleys. To find it yourself you’re setting your sights on Langdale (just a short drive from Ambleside) from which you’ll hike up to the cool waters of Stickle Tarn. Once here the route leaps right out at you, as it cuts across the face of Pavey Ark, the imposing wall of rock that dominates the skyline from this point.
Although technically a Grade 1 scramble, this is not a route to be underestimated. The ascent is steep from the off and the growing sense of exposure to your left-hand side as you climb upward can be unnerving for the inexperienced. The rock is often wet and slippery too, meaning that slow, steady and secure progress is essential. Because of this and the route’s enduring popularity there are slips, accidents and even fatalities here every year – so caution is advised at all times. However, approach Jack’s Rake safely and you’ll discover a natural scrambling line of supreme mountain drama and consistent interest. This is a deservedly celebrated route.
Look out for other videos in the Britain's Mountain Challenges series featuring some of the UK's finest and most thrilling mountain landscapes.

An awesome grade 1 scramble in the lake District National Park. Only grade 1, but long and enjoyable. Great weather today, water level was so low, that all normal difficulties could be overcome. Great fun boulder hopping over the water, even though a bank holiday Sunday, did not see anyone else. :)

JACK'S RAKE, PAVEY ARK - Full scramble, step by step.
Jacks Rake on Pavey Ark in Great Langdale, Cumbria is a classic Grade 1 Scramble, providing excellent fun with some of the exposure of rock climbing without the need to carry all the gear.
Recommended for any hiker looking for a little more adventure. Generally easy with an abundance of excellent holds, but with the option of some challenging and exciting obstacles along the route depending upon the line taken. In places the Rake is reduced to a narrow ledge further increasing the sense of exposure.
Video shows the full scramble from POV perspective filmed using a GoPro Hero2 on a chest harness.
UPDATE 21/06/2012: Two people have died on Jacks Rake this week in separate incidents. Please be aware that this route is not a walk, it is a scramble, and it is exposed in places and a fall will most likely prove fatal. The scramble may appear easier on this video than it actually is. In addition you must have the confidence to complete the scramble once started, as it would be unwise to try and climb back down. If in any doubt do not attempt for your own safety.
Thanks for watching!
