Monte Mills has become an icon of the California Central Coast. Monte's not only one of the last of the yodeling cowboys... He's the best! A Farrier and auctioneer by trade, he's the real deal. But he's more than just a singing cowboy. He's part of life around these parts. He's been instrumental in keeping traditional western swing country music alive introducing it to thousands of Cal Poly students and Central Coast residents each year. Saturday night Aggie Stomps attract masses of swing dancers, new and old to experience this infectiously fun music that has become an energizing ingredient of the Cal Poly / Central Coast experience.
Monte and The Lucky Horseshoe Band perform weekly at fairs, dances, private parties and more. He has performed for luminaries, politicians and entertainers including Kenny Rogers, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Monte Montana, President Reagan, Governor Deukmejian and others.
Monte has released numerous albums of his own music and has produced a number of other county music up-and-comers on his independent record label Lucky Horseshoe records. But the real joy is to see Monte perform live...
Monte Mills is an effervescent entertainer that will bring a smile to your face and rhythm to your feet. His family-friendly shows are energetic with a contagious country swing beat that compels you to get up and dance. Monte's personable, good-natured stage presence makes one and all, young and old, feel part of the show. Do yourself a favor and catch this good-time cowboy singer in action
Monte recently opened for country legend Merle Haggard. Select Photos in the menu bar to see Monte and Merle.
Monte and his musicians play about a fifty gigs a year, ranging from Barn Dances, Weddings, Bar-B-Qs, election campaigns, jail dedications, birthday parties to full-blown concerts. The group is known as a country band and they do play mostly country music, but they can just as easily slip into 50s and 60s oldies rock and roll, 1940's big band or Gospel. Monte personally loves to play and sing those old Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys western swing tunes. The band's repertoire is mostly pre Garth Brooks. Instead of performing the new songs heard on the radio, Monte has chosen to feature the songs that have become classics. Songs like Your Cheatin' Heart, Jambalaya, Workin' Man Blues, Crazy, Silver Wings, etc. will be with us always. The same can be said for the old Rock standards like Johnny Be Good.
Monte's years of experience have taught him what to play and when. Sometimes timing still is everything. The band doesn't play from a predetermined list, instead they are very sensitive to the situation and play what is appropriate at the moment. This kind of judgment can make or break an event and Monte and his band want to make each performance the best it can be for their audience. They like to see just how much energy they can get back from a crowd. It is really important to them that people have a good time.

Zodiac
The hunt is on for a serial killer in San Francisco. Few cases in the history of true crime are as intriguing as that of Zodiac, a bizarre gunman in an executioner's hood, who taunts the police with dozens of letters containing eerie messages and cryptograms. Director David Fincher (Panic Room, Fight Club, Se7en) captures the story of the infamous killer who terrorized the city in the late 1960s. Jake Gyllenhaal (Jarhead, The Day After Tomorrow), Robert Downey, Jr. (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang), Anthony Edwards (ER) and Mark Ruffalo (We Don't Live Here Anymore, Rumor Has It...) star.
Calling All Cars: Lt. Crowley Murder / The Murder Quartet / Catching the Loose Kid
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is the police department of the city of Los Angeles, California.
The LAPD has been copiously fictionalized in numerous movies, novels and television shows throughout its history. The department has also been associated with a number of controversies, mainly concerned with racial animosity, police brutality and police corruption.
The radio show Calling All Cars hired LAPD radio dispacher Jesse Rosenquist to be the voice of the dispatcher. Rosenquist was already famous because home radios could tune into early police radio frequencies. As the first police radio dispatcher presented to the public ear, his was the voice that actors went to when called upon for a radio dispatcher role.
The iconic television series Dragnet, with LAPD Detective Joe Friday as the primary character, was the first major media representation of the department. Real LAPD operations inspired Jack Webb to create the series and close cooperation with department officers let him make it as realistic as possible, including authentic police equipment and sound recording on-site at the police station.
Due to Dragnet's popularity, LAPD Chief Parker became, after J. Edgar Hoover, the most well known and respected law enforcement official in the nation. In the 1960s, when the LAPD under Chief Thomas Reddin expanded its community relations division and began efforts to reach out to the African-American community, Dragnet followed suit with more emphasis on internal affairs and community policing than solving crimes, the show's previous mainstay.
Several prominent representations of the LAPD and its officers in television and film include Adam-12, Blue Streak, Blue Thunder, Boomtown, The Closer, Colors, Crash, Columbo, Dark Blue, Die Hard, End of Watch, Heat, Hollywood Homicide, Hunter, Internal Affairs, Jackie Brown, L.A. Confidential, Lakeview Terrace, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Life, Numb3rs, The Shield, Southland, Speed, Street Kings, SWAT, Training Day and the Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Terminator film series. The LAPD is also featured in the video games Midnight Club II, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, L.A. Noire and Call of Juarez: The Cartel.
The LAPD has also been the subject of numerous novels. Elizabeth Linington used the department as her backdrop in three different series written under three different names, perhaps the most popular being those novel featuring Det. Lt. Luis Mendoza, who was introduced in the Edgar-nominated Case Pending. Joseph Wambaugh, the son of a Pittsburgh policeman, spent fourteen years in the department, using his background to write novels with authentic fictional depictions of life in the LAPD. Wambaugh also created the Emmy-winning TV anthology series Police Story. Wambaugh was also a major influence on James Ellroy, who wrote several novels about the Department set during the 1940s and 1950s, the most famous of which are probably The Black Dahlia, fictionalizing the LAPD's most famous cold case, and L.A. Confidential, which was made into a film of the same name. Both the novel and the film chronicled mass-murder and corruption inside and outside the force during the Parker era. Critic Roger Ebert indicates that the film's characters (from the 1950s) represent the choices ahead for the LAPD: assisting Hollywood limelight, aggressive policing with relaxed ethics, and a straight arrow approach.
