Jack Ma: To Export to China, Come to Detroit
Alibaba Executive Chairman Jack Ma says China’s burgeoning middle class represents a big opportunity for U.S. small businesses, farmers and entrepreneurs to grow their operations and add jobs and invites them to a meeting in Detroit to find out how. gateway17.com.

Alibaba's Jack Ma to Propose Electronic World Trade Platform at G20 Summit
Jack Ma, founder and chairman of China's e-commerce giant Alibaba, will propose setting up an electronic world trade platform (eWTP) at the upcoming Group of 20 (G20) summit to help private enterprises increase their global trade.
The eWTP, a mechanism for public-private dialogue in cross-border e-trade development, will improve the current trade framework and help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), developing countries, women and the young generation participate in the global economy, said Jack Ma at an interview with China Central Television in Hangzhou on Wednesday afternoon.
We propose setting up an electronic world trade platform to G20 leaders. We hope to build a free, fair and open trade platform for SMEs around the world. At present, WTO finds it difficult to advance certain negotiations after the Doha forum. I think many countries have politicized the trade and commercial issues that should have been solved by business itself. So we should work out solutions for SMEs and youth employment. We hope if SMEs want to sell items to the Philippines or Kenya and buy products from Norway, they can, Ma said.
The initiative represents China's responsibility as a major power and the second largest economy, Ma said, adding that it will not only bring new opportunities to SMEs, but will also enlarge the size of the middle class, and promote social stability and economic development.
However, against the backdrop of a global economic slowdown and rising protectionism, the main challenge to implementing the eWTP lies in the coordination of efforts by different countries.
We will push it no matter what results from this meeting. We expect G20 leaders to agree and support it, but agreement and support is just a start. What comes after will be even more difficult. We know many consensuses were reached at the APEC or G20 meetings, but implementation is the most crucial, Ma said.
The 11th G20 summit will be held on Sept. 4-5 in China's eastern city of Hangzhou under the theme of Toward an Innovative, Invigorated, Interconnected and Inclusive World Economy. More on:

Alibaba and Jack Ma: Beyond E-commerce and China—Implications for Silicon Valley
[Recorded April 26th, 2016]
Alibaba: The House That Jack Ma Built, by Duncan Clark, is the story of an entrepreneur whose remarkable charisma, ambition, and unrelenting determination helped build a company that surprised the world.
In just a decade and a half, Jack Ma, a man from modest beginnings who started out as an English teacher, built Alibaba into one of the world’s largest companies, rivaling Walmart and Amazon. In 2014 Alibaba’s $25 billion IPO was the largest global IPO in history. A Rockefeller of his time who is courted by CEOs and presidents around the world, Ma is an icon for China’s booming private sector and the gatekeeper to hundreds of millions of middle-class consumers.
Alibaba is a story of East vs. West. How did an upstart company in China take on the giants of Silicon Valley, ultimately joining their ranks to become one of the world’s most successful Internet businesses? Alibaba is also a story of North vs. South. As Beijing government leaders attempt to wean the country off the old economic model of manufacturing and exports, do entrepreneurs far from the northern seat of government power, like Jack Ma, hold the keys to a consumer-led future in new frontiers, from finance to entertainment and beyond?
Marguerite Gong Hancock, executive director of the Exponential Center, the Museum’s new center for entrepreneurship and innovation and co-founder and former director of China 2.0 at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, hosted Jack Ma twice as a keynote speaker in the Valley. Marguerite will engage in a dynamic conversation with Duncan Clark on Jack Ma and Alibaba, the leader and the company that symbolize China’s current economic transformation. Duncan Clark first met Jack in 1999 in the small apartment where Jack founded Alibaba. Granted unprecedented access to a wealth of new material, including exclusive interviews, Clark draws on his own experience as an early adviser to Alibaba as well as his two decades in China chronicling the Internet’s impact on the country.

Alibaba CEO takes Jack Ma on a Test Ride of New Internet Car
Alibaba Group (NYSE:BABA) today announced the launch of OS’Car, the first YunOS enabled, mass produced internet car, in collaboration with SAIC Motor Corp. Alibaba unveiled “YunOS for cars”, a smart operating system tailored for the automotive industry, which marks a milestone for Alibaba’s Internet of Things (IoT) strategy and underlines the potential of internet-connected lifestyles.
“Humans have made machines more intelligent in the past few decades. What we hope to achieve in the coming decades is to inject machines with human wisdom. Just as software programs have made the phone smarter today, YunOS will make cars an even more indispensable part of human life in the future society. Today marks the dawn of that new era. We feel proud and privileged to be playing a part in driving that change.” said Jack Ma, Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group.
Equipped with YunOS, the OS’Car RX5 is the first “Internet-connected Car” of its kind in mass production, co-developed after two years of intensive study and collaboration between the two pioneers in the e-commerce and the automobile industries. Unlike traditional automobiles, this new car will be supported by a cloud-based platform that enables data streaming, modeling and reporting, providing the ultimate driving experience with innovative features.
“What we are creating is not ‘internet in the car’, but a ‘car on the internet’. This is a significant milestone in the automobile industry. Smart operating systems become the second engine of cars, while data is the new fuel,” said Dr. Wang Jian, Chairman of Technology Steering Committee of Alibaba Group. “Going forward, cars will become an important platform for internet services and smart hardware innovation. We will be embracing a world where everything is closely connected.”
The OS’Car RX5 is currently available for sale from RMB 99,800 to RMB 186,800. The OS’Car RX5 will be simultaneously launched on the SAIC Tmall flagship store today and presented at the Alibaba Automobile Festival from July 20 to 31, 2016.

Hi, my name is Celina Lou, and I am the Canadian Trade Office manager in Hangzhou.
Hangzhou is the capital city of Zhejiang province. It is renowned for its high living standards, well-developed infrastructure, and proximity to Shanghai, only 170 kilometers away, or a quick 60 minute trip by train. Alibaba, the world's largest e-business platform, is headquartered in Hangzhou.
Located in the South-East coast of China, Zhejiang Province boasts the fourth largest provincial economy in China, with a GDP exceeding 800 billion dollars Canadian in 2014.
Zhejiang is home to more than 55 million residents and it covers a land area exceeding a hundred thousand square kilometres. It is a leading province in e-commerce, modern logistics and high-tech. In 2013, Zhejiang’s e-commerce transactions were roughly $277 billion Canadian dollars.
The private sector generates over 70% of the GDP and creates over 90% of new jobs in Zhejiang. Over the past 15 years, Zhejiang’s private enterprises have consistently accounted for about one third of China’s Top 500 Private Enterprises, which is the largest proportion in Mainland China. It is also worth mentioning that Zhejiang has a large number of SMEs and startups.
Recently more and more people are paying greater attention to food safety. Increasing disposable incomes are allowing consumers to enjoy imported food and beverages. There is strong demand for Canadian food products, which are known for their high quality. Meanwhile, Chinese e-Commerce platforms are improving accessibility to Canadian foods as well as to Canadian consumer products, such as health products, nutraceuticals and cosmetic products.
Two of the six pilot cross-border e-commerce cities announced by the state government are located in Zhejiang province, namely Hangzhou and Ningbo. Hangzhou’s goal is to become the “e-commerce capital of China” while Ningbo’s shipping hub facilitates access to international markets. These cross-border e-commerce platforms allow Canadian SMEs to mitigate the risks associated with entering new markets.
The fast pace of industrial development has resulted in serious pollution to Zhejiang’s water bodies. In late 2013, the Zhejiang Provincial Government committed to an investment of 80 billion Canadian dollars over 3 years to manage water resources in Zhejiang. Potential opportunities include the treatment of wastewater, flood control, storm water drainage, potable water security and water use efficiency.
There are many opportunities in the Ocean Technology sector. The Ningbo-Zhoushan port in Zhejiang Province is a large comprehensive harbor with a handling capacity of a hundred million tons. The Zhoushan Fishery is the largest in China, while the Shipu and Shenjiamen fishing ports are two of the four largest fish producers in China.
There are always challenges when doing business abroad, such as commercial risks, language and culture differences.
Although the number of English speakers in China is rising rapidly, most of the key decision makers in Zhejiang are unable to negotiate business transactions in English or French. It’s important to hire a qualified interpreter to assist with general discussions, formal presentations and negotiations....

Jack Ma, the billionaire who ushered e-commerce into China, is officially stepping down as Alibaba's executive chairman on Tuesday. He's celebrating his retirement with a big bash at an Olympic-sized stadium in the company's hometown of Hangzhou.
Before I'm 70 years old, I can do something in other fields, in areas like education, Ma said at an Alibaba event last September.
Ma announced his intention to resign a year ago.
Even after stepping away from Alibaba's senior management and board, he is expected to continue to shape the company's future through his lifetime membership with the Alibaba Partnership, a group of 36 people that can nominate a majority of the directors to the board. He also retains a 6.22% share of the company. Alibaba CEO Daniel Zhang will also take on the role of chairman from Ma.
A Communist Party member, Ma is China's most famous entrepreneur and — with a fortune of nearly $40 billion — the country's richest man.
But he's also a former English teacher, and has often talked about his passion for education. The date that Ma chose to formally step down, September 10, is Teachers' Day in China, so there's some messaging in that, Clark said. It's also Ma's 55th birthday.
Teachers always want their students to exceed them, so the responsible thing ... for me and the company to do is to let younger, more talented people take over in leadership roles, Ma said last September.
Ma and Alibaba have hosted a biennial conference in China on women and entrepreneurship since 2015. The events have drawn names such as Arianna Huffington and Vera Wang. This year's conference included a video message from Rihanna.
Ma said that gender equality is one of the most important issues in the 21st century, noting that if you want your business to succeed, it is critical to appoint enough female leaders.
Nearly half of Alibaba's senior management team are women.
Leaving 'on a high'
Ma was honored by the Chinese government last November as one of 100 people who had made outstanding contributions to China's economic transformation in the past four decades. The event was reported by the People's Daily, the official newspaper of the ruling Communist Party, which outed Ma as a member.
The revelation came amid rising concern over the tighter grip being exerted on China's private sector by the Communist Party under President Xi Jinping.
Ma is stepping away from Alibaba at a relatively young age. He has said in the past that he wants to retire earlier than Bill Gates, who stepped down as chairman of Microsoft at the age of 58 in 2014.
Some people have linked the timing of Ma's decision to the Chinese government's increasing restrictions on internet companies.

where do CRAZY RICH CHINESE live? | Billionaire Chinese Entrepreneurs
I have scouted them out, all of them!
Follow me on instagram: MAGNUSDETTMAR
1) Beijing: 15.5%
If you want to stay rich, stay close to power. More than 15% of the rich list call the Chinese capital home.
Why live there? While the city’s dogged by persistent pollution, it’s also at the center of government, which is a pretty big deal in a country where the state still has a huge say in how business is done. And companies agree: the city is home to the headquarters of 53 Fortune Global 500 firms, the most in the world.
Who lives there? Wang Jianlin, China’s fifth richest man, calls the capital home. For the founder of the Dalian Wanda group, his role in everything from real estate development to cinema chains means that it’s useful to stay close to the seat of power. He’s been known to repeat the maxim: “Stay close to the government and distant from politics.”
Shenzhen grew rapidly from almost nothing to a mega-hub for global tech.
2) Shenzhen: 10.2%
Located right on the southern coast of China, just 40 years ago Shenzhen was a humble fishing village. But spurred by China’s opening-up policies and the presence of Hong Kong just over the border, the city has become a huge center, particularly for technology. It’s estimated that 90% of the world’s electronics are made in Shenzhen.
Why live there? Shenzhen’s breakneck pace of development, its proximity to the factories of south China and its huge shipping port make it an ideal location for the tech billionaire on the make.
Who lives there? Pony Ma, founder of tech giant Tencent and China’s third-richest man, calls Shenzhen home.
3) Shanghai: 8.5%
There are still plenty of Crazy Rich Asians in Shanghai, of course. China’s largest city by population was trading center for hundreds of years, and since the 1990s it’s emerged as a global financial capital.
Why live there? The city is China’s commercial and financial center. It hosts the Shanghai Stock Exchange, China’s largest, and the world’s busiest container port. The city’s skyscrapers are emblematic of China’s development and transformation, and it still retains a sense of history: nowhere is that more evident than from the waterfront Bund, where heritage buildings along one bank of the Huangpu river are contrasted with the soaring towers of Pudong district on the other side.
Who lives there? Colin Huang, founder of e-commerce company Pinduoduo, is a new addition to the Hurun rich list, coming in at number 13 thanks to his company’s recent $1.6 billion IPO. He’s based out of Shanghai.
4) Hangzhou: 6.3%
The saying goes “Paradise above, Suzhou and Hangzhou below.” These neighboring cities are widely seen as some of China’s most beautiful, and Hangzhou’s centerpiece West Lake is legendarily scenic – if mosquito-prone.
Why live there? Scenic view aside, Hangzhou’s location as the southern terminus of China’s Grand Canal has made it one of China’s richest cities for more than a thousand years. Nowadays, it’s also one of China’s tech and research centers.
Who lives there? No less than China’s richest man. Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma was born and raised in Hangzhou, and built his business from scratch in the city, which the company still calls home. Alibaba also owns Inkstone.
5) Guangzhou: 4.8%
Just 65 miles from the nearby city of Shenzhen, Guangzhou has far more heritage than its upstart neighbor. Once known to foreigners as Canton, the city was many for years China’s only trading port with the outside world: a legacy that’s lived on in its comparatively multicultural feel. It’s at the core of the Pearl River Delta, the southern mega-conglomeration of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macau. It’s also the birthplace of Cantonese cuisine and language, two exports which have spread across the world.
Why live there? Like Shenzhen, the city is at the center of to southern China’s manufacturing heartland. And to some eyes, the city has a touch more heritage and culture than its brash younger brother Shenzhen.
Who lives there? Xu Jiayin, China’s second-richest man, lays his head in Guangzhou. The chairman of the Evergrande real estate group, he also the primary owner (with Alibaba’s Jack Ma) of Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao FC, one of the country’s top soccer teams.
