Around and In the Jackson Falls, White Mountains, New Hampshire
Driving Jackson, N.H. In Winter
Driving Jackson, N.H. In Winter
Jackson is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 816 at the 2010 census. Jackson is an elegant resort area in the White Mountains. Parts of the White Mountain National Forest are in the west, north and east. Jackson has many beautiful hotels and B&B's including the Carter Notch Inn, The Inn at Jackson, the Eagle Mountain Hotel and the Wildcat Tavern.
Once consisting of several large land grants by Colonial Governor John Wentworth, the town was first named New Madbury, after the seacoast town of Madbury. In 1772, a road was built through Pinkham Notch, and the area was first settled in 1778 by Benjamin Copp and his family. In 1800, the community was renamed in honor of President John Adams, who was then in office. The name Adams stuck until the town was incorporated in 1829, when Andrew Jackson, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans, was inaugurated president. Governor Benjamin Pierce, a staunch backer of President Jackson, was influential in changing the name to Jackson. Only one vote was cast against the switch.
In 1847, artists of the White Mountain School began arriving in Jackson to paint the scenic beauty of the White Mountains. Others would follow, and in 1858, Joshua B. Trickey opened the Jackson Falls House. The Portland & Ogdensburg Railroad began service to Glen station at nearby Bartlett in the early 1870s, and several hotels were built to accommodate a growing infusion of tourists. Thorn Mountain House, built by Trickey in 1869, would evolve during the 1880s into Wentworth Hall, still in business today. Designed as a grouping of cottages around a main service building, the hotel included such amenities as a casino, built in 1886, and a hydroelectric plant, built in the 1890s. By the 1920s, 40 trains a day delivered passengers to Jackson.
The increasing use of automobiles, however, reduced travel by train, as vacationers could venture beyond the limits of rail service. Consequently, some grand 19th century hotels lost patrons and closed, although the town itself would never lose popularity. Jackson is one of the region's most picturesque villages, famous in part for Jackson Falls and Jackson X-C, a 150+ kilometer cross-country skiing trail system, rated one of the best in the world. Wildcat Mountain, with an unsurpassed view of Mount Washington, is a favorite alpine skiing destination. Jackson is perhaps best known for its red covered bridge (the Honeymoon Bridge), built in 1876, one of the most photographed in the state.

The Wentworth:
You may not find John Barrymore and Greta Garbo on the guest list, but The Wentworth is truly a Grand Hotel in the European tradition, with a history that reaches back a century and a quarter to the golden age of New England resorts.
At the turn of the century, Wentworth Hall sported an attractive Casino, with spacious smoking and billiard parlours, cafe, et cetera; while overhead a large handsome ballroom is brilliantly illuminated by its overarching electric lights. Here the guests dance every Wednesday and Saturday evenings. Two formal balls are held each season. So goes the text of a booklet available to guests in the twenties: Wentworth Hall is situated in an amphitheater, rimmed by the noblest mountain peaks of the region. On one side is Mount Washington, on the other Kearsarge, both within easy driving distance, while Thorn Mountain, Tin Mountain, Spruce Mountain, Doublehead, Black Mountain, Giant's Stairs, Iron Mountain, the Moat Range, and a host of others guard this happy valley, which is encircled by the Wildcat and Glen Ellis Rivers. Both of these noted streams unite their forces near Wentworth Hall, and flow on to the Saco, three miles distant.

Castle For Sale - 61 Carter Notch Road, Jackson, NH
What if you could spend all of your vacations living a true life fantasy? Once you walk into this home, you’ll instantly fall in love. Go back to a time in our Victorian past, when people actually did indulge in their fantasies. Live like royalty in this magnificently appointed home, modeled after the Queen Anne style manors of Old England. There’s a beautiful, scenic golf course, practically next door. Jackson is one of the prettiest New England villages you’ll ever find! And, it’s in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, just minutes from Mount Washington, the tallest peak in the northeast.
Known as “The Castle”, this pristine, architectural showpiece was built on a unique, rocky overlook, directly across from the scenic Jackson Falls on the Wildcat River. Originally built by General Marshall C. Wentworth and his wife, Georgia T., groundbreaking took place in June of 1891, and the home was completed by 1893.
The Wentworths built this elegant home while developing Wentworth Hall and Cottages, a grand resort hotel, which is still very popular today with its 18-hole golf course for summer enjoyment, and cross-country ski trails during the winter months.
Constructed with natural stone from the Ellis and Wildcat River valleys, the foundation is said to be 7 feet thick. Two towers with conical, slate covered roofs are prominent at the front of the home, attached to a central hipped roof dormer. This is one of the original White Mountain Cottages, which were built as “Summer Homes” for the rich and famous of the Victorian era.
The home has countless unique and whimsical features, and is in remarkably pristine condition. Incredible workmanship went into the oak and birch woodwork and built-ins including hutches, wainscoting, railings, casings, moldings, fireplaces, arched doorways, bookcases and more. Numerous antique chandeliers can be found throughout the home.
The domes of each tower each have their own mystical settings. In one, a hand-painted tent ceiling is wonderfully preserved in the octagonal tower bedroom. The other tower bedroom was known as the “Mystic Chamber”. This bedroom has an alluring blue ceiling, and an acoustical phenomenon, extremely noticeable when speaking from the center of the room.
New systems and updates are in place, seamlessly preserving the original splendor of this magical home. The chimneys have been repointed, the entire foundation is pointed and sealed in the lower level.
The home features 13 rooms, each with its own ambiance and elegance. There are 6 bedrooms and 5 1/2 baths. There are 8 fireplaces of elaborate and intricate detail, designed specifically for each room.
The grounds include gardens, walkways, and overlooks. There’s also a caretaker’s cottage and a heated garage.
Everything about this home is original, unique and inspiring. Like many of the “White Mountain Summer Cottages” these homes were built upon imagination and fantasy with sound architecture. They were meant to reflect their surroundings. Each side of these houses were unique to present their own effect in relation to the background. Originally known as “The Towers”, this home’s local name evolved into “The Castle”. It certainly has the look and feel of a castle, and holds a special place among the fabulous homes of the White Mountains.
The Wentworth Castle isn’t just a fantasy home. It’s in a fantasy location! Surrounded by scenic mountain views, sparkling rivers, waterfalls and inspiring trails, the Mount Washington Valley is 4-season destination with some of the most brilliant fall foliage in the country, world class skiing in the winter, and tax free, discount outlet shopping on a grand scale. It has been the choice location for countless weddings and upscale events. It would make a perfect venue for corporate retreats. But family and friends are most important. The Wentworth Castle is on the market at an incredible value, and could be the best family heirloom of all.
Jackson N.H. To North Conway, Evening Drive
Driving the evening after Nor'easter Stella March 2017 from our cabin in Jackson, New Hampshire which is north of North Conway thru the town of North Conway, N.H. ending at Settlers Green.
North Conway is a census-designated place (CDP) in eastern Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 2,349 at the 2010 census. A year-round resort area, North Conway is the largest village within the town of Conway, which is bounded on the east by the Maine state line. The White Mountain National Forest is to the west and north. Conway is home to Cathedral Ledge (popular with climbers), Echo Lake State Park, and Mount Cranmore. North Conway is known for its large number of outlet shops.
Chartered in 1765 by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth, the town is named for Henry Seymour Conway, ambitious son of a prominent English family, who was elected to the House of Commons at age twenty, fought at Culloden, and became Secretary of State. Early settlers called the area Pequawket (known colloquially as Pigwacket), adopting the name of the Abenaki Indian village which stretched down the Saco River to its stockaded center at Fryeburg, Maine.
North Conway is located in the White Mountains, with Mount Washington located to the northwest. The rugged terrain became popular in the 19th century with artists. Their paintings were known collectively as White Mountain art, which in turn attracted tourists to the area, particularly after the Portsmouth, Great Falls & Conway Railroad extended service in 1872 to North Conway. In 1874, the line built a Second Empire depot, designed by Nathaniel J. Bradlee. In 1932, snow trains began carrying enthusiasts to the birthplace of American skiing, as North Conway is known.
Increasing automobile travel brought the decline of trains. The railroad, then part of the Boston & Maine, abandoned passenger service to the area in 1961, and freight service in 1972. Subsequently, the Conway Scenic Railroad was established. Today, the line offers visitors a tour of the region, including Crawford Notch. The station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the late 1980s, the White Mountain Airport closed and was redeveloped as a large outlet mall called Settlers' Green Outlet Village. Continued growth through the 1990s and 2000s in North Conway and the villages nearby made Conway the most populous community in Carroll County. Traffic congestion led to an overhaul of the road system, including widening Route 16 through North Conway village and constructing a road parallel to Route 16 to allow traffic to move between Redstone and Intervale uninterrupted. A bypass of the area is being developed.
North Conway remains a popular destination due to its shopping, recreation, and attractions.
