JACO ISLAND// TIMOR-LESTE
A little video of my trip over to Jaco Island in Timor-Leste, or Easttimor as some know it by this April.
It's one of the world's least visited countries with only 60.000 international visitors a year. Surprising since it's safe, absoutely stunning and visa free for many countries.
Sorry about the windy noice on the beach - I still haven't found a suitable microphone of muff for my camera.

TIMOR-LESTE PT.3 (JACO ISLAND) - The Way Overland - Episode 14
This week we do a lap of Timor-Leste, driving to the south coast, then back up north to a town called Baucau. From here we drive to the most eastern point of Timor to Tutuala Beach.
Our original plan was to drive here and then get the boat to Jaco Island, which lies just a few hundred metres off the coast, though the local fishermen who take you here were charging an arm and a leg to take you on the 3 minute boat ride so we decided to enjoy the beach which was right at our new doorstep. It did not disappoint! The water was crystal clear with a coral garden full of life. The snorkelling is very easy here as the water didn’t go much deeper than 8m. Although it was a long trek to get here, it was certainly worth it.
Unfortunately we ran out of food and it was time to start heading towards Indonesia. So we were on the road and heading to the Indonesian border. On our way to the border we made a last minute decision to go to Balibo, a village in Timor-Leste which is infamously known for by Balibo 5. A group of 5 journalists working for Australian TV networks were murdered in Balibo by Indonesian soldiers while covering the impending Indonesian invasion of Timor Leste. Being journalists, they believed that they wouldn’t be considered targets and decided to paint the Australian Flag and the word Australia on the wall of the community centre to send a message to the Indonesians of who was there, though unfortunately this was to no avail. While the murder of the 5 journalists was a tragedy in itself, it is speculated that between anywhere from 90,000 to over and 200,000 East Timorese were killed during the 24 year Indonesian occupation.
The last minute decision to go to Balibo turned out to be a good one. Mark came down with a flu so we spent a couple of days there while he rested, and Jolie went out to a primary school in the mountains with a lovely Australian lady, Michelle, who has been volunteering at the Balibo Community Centre for the past 2 years. It was great hearing Michele’s stories and most of all seeing how excited the kids were about the little things that we take for granted, like an exercise book and pencils.
Next week we drive into Indonesia, spend a couple of days in Kupang whilst we wait for the ferry to Flores. Then in Flores we visit Mt Kelimuntu and see the tri-coloured lakes.
If you have any suggestions on places we must see in Indonesia we’d love to hear from you!

Jaco/Jako Island in Timor Leste - snorkelling in uninhabited paradise.
So this was the long awaited end of my Motorbike South Coast Tour. A great reward for this crazy exhausting but unforgettable trip. The island is tiny and cute but the road from Tutuala to the beach with boats is the worst in Timor. Only 4WD cars can pass. My motorbike withstood the challenge and took me up and down that ugly trail.
I am not the biggest fan of desert islands because they are all the same and I've seen quite a few of them. I find them all quite boring for a long stay because there is nothing to do but swim and fish. I tried to hike across Jaco but there are no trails and I quickly got lost and panicked which forced me to turn back. I snorkelled for about 2 hours and went back to Tutuala.
While the island is nice it not any different from many thousands of islands around Asia in Thai, Cambo, Viet which are in addition much more easily accessible.
So I would say it's not worth a special visit but if you find yourself somewhere in Lautem district you can give it a try.
Oh, and the prices are disgusting for transport and accommodation. The boat commute to the island is 10$ and it's like 700m. It's more expensive than to Atauro. Locals are obviously corrupted by the few tourists that come here and became greedy. Very simple and basic bungalos at the beach with toilet outside are like 20$ which is ridiculous cause it's not even on Jaco. In Cambodia I stayed in a bungalo on an paradisiac island for 5$ a night with a shower and toilet INSIDE.
I ended up staying in Pousada de Tutuala for 15$ a night for a tiny room with a floor bed no furniture. Other rooms were also super expensive considering their more than average comfort.
With the current situation I don't see any perspectives for Timorese tourism industry to win the competition for customers with other destinations like Bali, Thai and Cambo. The service is not worth the money locals ask here and you always feel a bit disappointed.
I for one have no intention to visit Jaco again. I saw it once, got mostly disappointed and will never come back.
My advice: if you have about 2-4 weeks of vacation and are entertaining different options - look closely at Thailand or Cambodia, they're as exotic and lovely as Timor, have got fantastic diving spots, but are cheaper with better service.
p.s. Timorese Ministry of Tourism must resign. They are a bunch of lazy old farts.
Road Trip to Jaco Island - January 2019 Timor-Leste
Road tripping through Timor-Leste from the 1st to the 4th of January 2019. Started from the capital, Dili, to the eastern tip Jaco Island and back.
Day 1: Travelled from Dili to Baucau. Didn't take any drone shots this day.
Day 2: Baucau to Tutuala. Visited Lagos (Lake) Ira Lalaro and took some drone shots there along with at Tutuala. Arrived in the evening so couldn't boat to Jaco Island.
Day 3: Spent the afternoon snorkelling at Jaco Island. Loads of corals and different species of fish. Also saw a 2 meter sting ray. Drove back to Baucau in the evening passing by the viewpoint at Tutuala and the cliffs.
Day 4: Drove from Baucau to Viqueque and back to Dili, passing Ossu. Also passed a neat waterfall but couldn't film due to intense rains. Got back home at 1am.
Disclaimer: The clips of the beach are choppy cause I lost the actual footage and had to use the footage stored in my phone's cache.

Jaco Island - Timor Leste Aerial Footage 2016
East Timor
Spent a couple of weeks in Asia's newest country, East Timor, and road tripped to the furthest southeast point in Asia. Sleeping in hammocks on the beach across from Jaco Island and hitchhiking in the back of an open pickup for hours during a monsoon are just a couple of memorable moments from this journey.

Forest in Jaco, East Timor
Shown here is a forest in Jaco in East Timor.
Jaco or Jako is a small island in the Lesser Sunda Islands. It lies across from the easternmost point of the island of Timor, Kap Cutcha. Its geographical coordinates are 8° 27' S and 127° 20' E. Politically it is part of the subdistrict of Tutuala within Lautém district of East Timor. It is separated from the mainland by a narrow channel, suitable for passage by small vessels only. It is about 10 square kilometers in area and reaches about 100 meters in altitude. The island is uninhabited. It is considered holy by the indigenous population and entering the island was forbidden. In our days, tourists are taken by fishermen to the island for diving and swimming. It is designated as a Wild Area. It has beautiful sand beaches. Native birds include the Dusky Cuckoo-dove (Macropygia magna) and the Fawn-breasted Whistler, (Pachycephala orpheus). It is also part of the new Nino Konis Santana National Park.
