FLEXN at Jacob's Pillow - Becket, MA - 8_20_16
A montage of my favorite moments of FLEXN at Jacob's Pillow, in Becket, Massachusetts.
Some of the brilliant, talented, and driven young dancers;
This was a really powerful show.
It was raw and filled with emotion in every second of it.
I appreciated the 1/2 hour town hall meeting that took place before the show. With Linda Tyer, Mayor of Pittsfield, Chief of Police Chief Michael J. Wynn, and President of the NAACP-Berkshire County Branch, Dennis Powell.
This seems to never happen, but these local leaders got together with the artists and simply talked about what is going on in our state, in Pittsfield and the Berkshires, and in our country - all on stage, as part of the presentation of the show.
If you still don't understand #BlackLivesMatter then it might be because you have simply not engaged personally with anybody truly working for the cause.
It might be because your only interaction with BLM is through the filter of the media. If so, try going to an BLM event and see what it is all about for yourself.
Among the many topics discussed that night, we got to hear how police themselves are responding to this national crisis on a local level, what they need to do better, and how it feels personally to be a police officer in times like these.
Mayor Tyer, expressed the anxiety and worry of the disconnect between the people, their community, and law enforcement.
The most poignant remarks I thought were from Mr. Powell about the learned behavior of hate, and how easy it is to replace reaction to the environment with hate, and not really be aware that you are doing so.
My take away from the dancing and storytelling was awe and love.
I had a realization of the mind-blowing awesomeness of our country.
The melting pot of diversity - the indomitable style these young people possess!
It made me so proud to be an American and part of this story...
Through sheer will and belief in one's self, a belief that can create opportunities if you make no excuses - including asking for help.
I think it is an inherent characteristic that we as Americans favor optimism, much owing to our diversity - and maybe *only because* of our diversity.
We don't care who you are, who you were, what you've done - we only care how big you can dream, how deeply you can connect, what are you willing to create to help others succeed and dream?
Shout out to Nicole Eigbrett of Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity for the heads up and hook up with the tickets!
Thanks Nicole! First time at Jacob's Pillow for all three of us, and it was a very special show.

A controversial figure in the Pilates world, Sean Gallagher is a villain to some and a protector of the method to others after a trademark lawsuit over the Pilates name. We visited his studio in New York to learn about Sean's story and the largest collection of archival Pilates materials in the world which he owns. In Part 1 of our Interview series Sean tells how he got into Pilates and purchased the copyright to the Pilates name and other materials from Wee Tai Hom in 1991. Sean details what is in the archives including photos, negatives, apparatus, video, and more. He shows us the 'Iron Shoe,' an apparatus that Joe used in the studio, talks about how Romana's training program evolved and how it appears that the exercises depicted in Joe's archives did not change during his lifetime. Stay tuned for Part 2 when Sean shares more detail about the archives. Visit Sean's studio at: The New York Pilates Studio. You can also visit the United States Pilates Association (USPA) which has a lease on some of Sean's archival materials and makes them available through workshops.

Going Back To Becket
This song was inspired by my father's bout with dementia, he's lived in Florida since the sixties but almost on a daily basis asks me if he's in Becket, MA, the small town he grew up in. I tell him that we're in Florida, and then he asks if we can go back to Becket...well this song came from that, these are all the places in and around Becket...
