Snorkeling in the Jacques Cousteau Underwater Reserve at Guadeloupe Island, France
11:22 a.m.: I’m here in the water for some snorkeling in the Jacques Cousteau Underwater Reserve at Guadeloupe Island, France. My Costa Pacifica shore excursion earlier cruised in a glass-bottom boat around Pigeon Island. Now we have about 20 minutes to snorkel.
Unfortunately the gear they gave me is really crappy. The snorkel doesn’t attach to mask, and the mask is leaking water. Makes it hard to snorkel if you don’t have the right equipment. I didn’t have space in my luggage to pack my own snorkel gear for this trip unfortunately.
11:42 a.m.: I’m out of the water and back on the boat. Just had about 20 minutes to snorkel. Had one big group of purple fish. Aside from that, it was mediocre I’m sad to say. Always frustrating trying to snorkel with a decrepit mask and snorkel.
We’re now getting ready to leave Pigeon Island and return to shore. My tour had an extremely early meting time of 8:15 so we’re about 3.5 hours out. After departing the Port of Pointe-a-Pitre, we drove across the island east to west on the Bass Terre part through the National Park of Guadeloupe, about 1,800 feet up in the hills.
This is my first time in Guadeloupe, a state of France. Enjoying a couple rum punches during the short trip back to shore. My excursion stopped at a waterfall and had about 20 minutes to wander around the beach before our boat departed.
As we head out of the marine reserve, I’m a little disappointed. This is supposed to be one the of the biggest attractions of Guadeloupe but I found it to be just average, so-so. But still a nice day, so can’t complain too loudly.

Sailing Around Pigeon Island in the Jacques Cousteau Underwater Reserve at Guadeloupe Island, France
10:45 a.m.: I’m here in the Jacques Cousteau Underwater Reserve off the west coast of Guadeloupe Island, France, aboard a glass-bottom boat circling Pigeon Island. There’s a group down below looking at the water through the glass bottom; my group is supposed to be second, and then we’ll have some snorkeling time.
This is the fifth port of call on my 17-night Costa Pacifica cruise from La Romana, Dominican Republic, across the Atlantic Ocean to Barcelona, Spain. One more stop in St. Lucia tomorrow, then Pacifica will begin its Atlantic crossing.

Precontinent II - Jacques Cousteau's underwater building / Diving Sudan
Precontinent II
Precontinent is a name of a set of projects to build an underwater village carried out by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and his team. This 10-minutes video is from Precontinent II, buildings at Sha´ab Rumi -reef in Sudan. Eight person stayded in these buildings a period of four weeks.
The aim of these projects was to show that people could live underwater for prolonged periods of time, while being subjected to the harsh environments of the deep sea. The pressure in the village buildings was regulated to that of the surrounding water, so that people could explore the environment around them.
Jacques Cousteau is probably the most famous figure in diving, past or present. He was a pioneer of underwater exploration and in 1963 used Sha'ab Rumi as a base for his second effort at living underwater. His boat Calypso moored at the reef and a series of habitats were anchored onto the reef where five divers would spend the next month. Support divers bought supplies from ship to village (including a parrot!) and the 'aquanauts' went about their daily lives for the next four weeks.
Diving here is like visiting an underwater museum. Relics of Jacques Cousteau's epic underwater experiment litter the sea bed giving an insight into the world he created for himself. There is the air-tight submarine hanger and a tool shed amongst other things. It's entertaining to swim among the remains.

JACQUES COUSTEAU 1955 UNDERWATER PETROLEUM PROSPECTING EXPEDITION STATION 307 70644
Made in 1955 and written, shot and edited by the great film director Louis Malle, STATION 307 is an early Jacques Cousteau movie. It shows a research expedition to the Persian Gulf and a dive near Bahrain in search of oil. The film was sponsored by the French arm of British Petroleum, and featured the ship Calypso which later became world famous. STATION 307 was the first of many films to single out the work of Cousteau.
At the time it was made the film offered several revolutionary ideas and technologies. First, the concept of prospecting for undersea oil -- was innovative. Second, the use of scuba diving equipment as shown in the film was new to many audience members. Third, the use of underwater camera equipment made the film unique and exceptional for its time period.

Underwater ROV of Cousteau Park, Guadeloupe
We sailed to Pidgeon Island off Guadeloupe and dove for two days at the Jacques Cousteau Marine Park there. Fantastic coral and fish! We used an unmanned underwater micro-ROV by VideoRay.com to record video of what we saw. This is just a short sample of the sights!
