Jade Buddha Temple in Shanghai, China
In 1882, a temple was founded at this location to house two rare jade Buddha statues brought to Shanghai from Burma. While the temple was destroyed in 1911 during the revolution that overthrew the Qing Dynasty, the statues were saved. A new temple, as seen today, was rebuilt from 1918 through 1928. Although the history of the temple is short, its striking classical architectural style are unique, especially in a modern city such as Shanghai.

Jade Buddha Temple - Shanghai - China
During the reign of the Guangxu Emperor (1871–1908) in the Qing dynasty, Huigen, a Buddhist monk, went on a pilgrimage to Tibet. He visited Myanmar (also known as Burma) after leaving Tibet. While there, Chen Jun-Pu, an overseas Chinese resident in Myanmar, donated five jade Buddha statues to Huigen, who transported two of them back to Shanghai. Here, Huigen had a temple built in 1882 with donated funds, where he placed the two jade Buddha statues. Shortly after the construction of the temple, the Buddhist monk passed away.
In 1911, during the Chinese Revolution, the original temple was occupied and damaged by the rebels. The temple, as well as the jade statues, were moved to a new location.
A few years later, in 1918, a Buddhist monk by the name of Kechen later had a new temple built on land donated by a member of the Qing imperial court, Sheng Xuanhuai. The construction took ten years, and completed in 1928.
In the 1960's, during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the temple faced difficult times and the monks had to make a living by selling handicrafts. In 1983, the Shanghai Buddhist Association used the temple as the headquarters of The Shanghai Institute of Buddhism.

2018 China: Shanghai - Jade Buddha Temple
In the western part of Shanghai, a very modern and flourishing city, there is a venerable and famous Buddhist temple, Jade Buddha Temple. In 1882, an old temple was built to keep two jade Buddha statues which had been brought from Burma by a monk named Huigen. The temple was destroyed during the revolution that overthrew the Qing Dynasty. Fortunately the statues were saved and a new temple was built on the present site in 1928. It was named the Jade Buddha Temple.
The two precious jade Buddhist statues are not only rare cultural relics but also porcelain artworks. Both the Sitting Buddha and the Recumbent Buddha are carved with whole white jade. The sparkling and crystal-clear white jade gives the Buddhas the beauty of sanctity and make them more vivid. The Sitting Buddha is 190 centimeters high and encrusted by the agate and the emerald, portraying the Buddha at the moment of his meditation and enlightenment. The Recumbent Buddha is 96 centimeters long, lying on the right side with the right hand supporting the head and the left hand placing on the left leg, this shape is called the 'lucky repose'. The sedate face shows the peaceful mood of Sakyamuni when he left this world. In the temple there is also another Recumbent Buddha which is four meters long and was brought from Singapore by the tenth abbot of the temple in 1989. Furthermore there are many other ancient paintings and Buddhist scriptures distributed in the different halls here.
Although the history of the Jade Buddha Temple is not very long, the old-time and classical architectural style makes it unique and inimitable in this modern city. Devajara Hall, Mahavira Hall and the Jade Buddha Tower make up the main structure of the temple and at sides are the Kwan-yin Dian Hall, the Amitabha Dian Hall, the Zen Tang Hall, the Dining-Room and the Recumbent Buddha Hall. The Sitting Buddha is in the Jade Buddha Tower and the Recumbent Buddhas are in the Recumbent Buddha Hall. More than 7,000 Dazang sutras are kept in the Jade Buddha Tower; these are all the inestimable culture relics.
The Jade Buddha Temple is a good place to go whether you are a Buddhist or not, the peaceful and transcendent atmosphere adds a kind of richness to our busy modern society.
Asia Vlog 15: Jade Buddha Temple, M50 Art District, and Lujiazui | Shanghai, China
On our first day in Shanghai, we went to the amazingly cool Jade Buddha Temple, walked around a cool park and explored the art galleries at M50. After dinner, we went to the Central Business District (Lujiazui) to see downtown and the Bund.

What's going on here?
We spent 110 days exploring Asia from October 2013 to January 2014. We vlogged the entire trip but we never edited it. Right now, a few years later, we're finally going through each vlog.
Click here to see all 110 days in a 2-minute video Tour of Asia:

0:29 - The Jade Buddha Temple is a large and very popular complex. We spent about 3 hours here exploring all the little rooms and sanctuaries. (Part of that time was spent just sitting, waiting for the large groups to move through so we could have the place to ourselves.) This is a definite must-see for Shanghai.
1:56 - Mengqing Park is a brand new park built on land that was a factory that made the surrounding Suzhou River the most polluted river in Shanghai. The Park was designed to rehabilitate and cleanse the area.
2:30 - On the way to M50, artists have tagged and graffitied all the walls and it's quite the sight. M50 stands for 50 Moganshan Lu, the actual address of the now defunct factory that housed over 120 art galleries and studio spaces. If you like art, this place is incredible! One of the coolest collections of art on the planet.
4:34 - Lujiazui is the central business district for Shanghai, where you find all the skyscrapers. Unlike other business districts (like New York) that virtually die at night because everyone works 9-5, Lujiazui was designed to include shopping and restaurants to attract people at night as well. It's fun. Looking out across the water from Lujiazui (sometimes called Pudong, which is the much larger area - like calling the Financial District in New York Manhattan), you can see the Bund, which you'll see lots more of later in the week, so make sure you're subscribed!

Shanghai's 2,200-Ton Jade Buddha Temple Moved 100 Feet
This Buddhist temple is on the move...literally.
Shanghai's Jade Buddha Temple was relocated 100 feet. It weighs 2,200 tons and includes three huge Buddhist statues.
The movement was a delicate operation, as custom-built rails lifted and moved the temple around 20 feet a day. The temple attracts about 2 million visitors a year, and the original location was no longer considered safe due to overcrowding.
