The Sangiliyan Statue commemorates the last ruler of the pre-colonial Jaffna Kingdom. North of the city are dozens of stone Buddhist stupas at the ruins of Kadurugoda Viharaya. Overlooking the ocean, the bathing tanks at Keerimalai are fed by underground springs. Causeways connect Jaffna to a number of offshore islands. On Karainagar Island, Casuarina Beach has shallow waters and is backed by leafy trees. Boats run to Nainativu, where the Nagadeepa Purana Viharaya temple is a Buddhist pilgrimage site. Portuguese ruins dot the island of Neduntheevu (Delft), which is also home to wild horses and a towering baobab tree.
Kadhurugoda Vihaaraya (Kantarodai, Jaffna) - Yapanaya
Kadhurugoda Vihaaraya (Kantarodai)
'Kadhurugoda Vihaaraya', the most ancient Vihaaraya in the North, now buried in ruins is in 'Kadhurugoda' ('Kantarodai' in Tamil). This is situated in North Vallikaaman, Yaapanaya. This site is also called 'Kadhivungoda Vihaaraya' in the 'Sinhala Naama Potha'.
'Kadhurugoda Vihaaraya' is also called 'Raajayatana Chêthiya'. As a 'Kiripalu' Tree had been planted at this site to commemorate the occasion of Lord Buddha's visit to 'Kadhurugoda', it appears this name had it's origin from this event. 'Kiripalu' in Paali Language is 'Raajayatanan' (Bachanania Latifolia), hence the name 'Raajayatana'.
This archeolgically important site was discovered originally by Dr. P.E. Pieris of the Ceylon Civil Service, in 1913. It is maintaind now as a reservation by the Department of Archeology.
In this Chethiya, many supposed relics of Lord Gauthaa Buddha were to have been found. The bases of twenty-two (22) Sthoopas, a head of Bôdhisathva in white Lime-Stone, pillar stumps, a stone slab with the sacred foot-print of Lord Gauthama Buddha, broken Buddha images made of Granite and Lime-Stone, Forty-eight (48) finials of small Sthoopas and a stone Pillar inscription belonging to the 10th Century AD were unearthed during excavations. The diameter of some of these Sthoopas range from eight (08) to twelve (12) feet. One was nearly twenty-three (23) feet. It is beleived that the small sthoopas were guradian edifices around the main Dhaagæba. They are all situated close to each other on a site with an extent of about two (02)acres.
A large quantity of coins believed to have been in circulation between the first (01) and thriteenth (13)centuries in the island were among the large number of tresures unearthed from this site. A huge Lime-Stone Buddha image of a very tranquil stance was also recovered and is (was) exhibited in the Yaapanaya Archeological Museum.
'King Bhaathika Thissa' (140~164 AD) made a 'Dhaathu Mandapaya' at the foot of the 'Kiripalu' Tree close to the Chêthiya and also a Monastery on the site. For the provision of Rice from the monks in this monastery, a large village and vast extent of paddy lands were set apart by this King. 'King Aggabhodh'i (608~618 AD) made charitable donations for the maintenance of the 'Kadhurugoda Vihaaraya'.
Rajagalatenna : Rassahela Ampara District Shri Lanka
A former Commissioner of Archaeology Dr. Charles Godakubura (Rajagalathenna -- by Sirisaman Wijethunga - Department of archaeology booklet --page 01) had stated (1961-62) that this mountain is 1038 feet above sea level.
This has been a forest hermitage. It's situated about 5 km from Bakki- ella. (Ampara -- Maha oya road few km. pass Uhana you arrive at Bakki ella. page 4)
Note This is a stupa/ Chaitya/Dagaba in Rajagala or Rassahela. The 4 chambers shown were where the artefacts (dathu) were placed. As you may have already realized it's the work of treasure hunters(nidan houru) many years ago though.

Nalanda is situated one km to the east of the A9 route 20km north of Aluvihare. Nalanda Gedige is one of a number of remarkable archaeological sites in Sri Lanka. Gedige is an image house - is strongly recommended, because it exhibits a composite style of architecture unique in Sri Lanka, and an extraordinary fusion of Hinduism and Buddhism. To cap it all, this remarkable shrine occupies an extremely picturesque. The small building is designed like a Hindu temple with a mandapa, an entrance hall (originally roofed), a short passage to a bare cello, and an ambulatory round the holy center. There is no sign of Hindu gods, however, and the temple is said to have been used by Buddhists. This is one of the earliest buildings of stone constructed in Ceylon
The richly decorated facade sections, laboriously reassembled in 1975, are predominantly in the South Indian style, and may have originated in the eighth to 11th centuries. . It is possible that Nalanda Gedige was a bold attempt at a fusion of Tamil and Sinhalese cultures.

This small, unkempt but interesting museum is hidden away at the end of a messy garden behind a concrete events hall. At the door are a pair of rusty Dutch cannons from the fort and a set of whale bones. Inside, there are a few treasures, including some 15th-century Buddha torsos found at Kantarodai and a 14th-century ‘seven-mouthed pot'.

How to Cover Jaffna in 2 Days
This summarises our recent visit to Jaffna, the northern part of Sri Lanka, our target was to cover as much as possible monuments in Jaffna peculiar in 2 days time. We are working on our next video How to Cover Jaffna in 2 Days - Part2 which will cover the travel tips in much detail.
Jaffna is a city on the north part of Sri Lanka. A derivation of Yapa Patuna (Sinhala: Port of Yapanaya), since the ancient times had been one of the four main seaports in Sri Lanka, the others being Dambakola Patuna (KKS or Kankesanturai) again in the North), Mathota (Mannar) in North-West and Gona (Trincomalee) in North-East. Jaffna’s proximity to neighbouring lands over the Palk Straits with a width of only 30km resulted in a frequent invasion by the powerful Dravidian kingdoms in southern India. The Jaffna seaport had been the springboard of the Dravidian marauders from India in the ancient history of Sri Lanka. Nallur Kandaswamy is a huge Hindu temple with golden arches and an ornate gopuram tower. By the coast, star-shaped Jaffna Fort was built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and later occupied by the Dutch and British. Jaffna Public Library is a symbol of the city’s post-war regeneration. Jaffna Archaeological Museum has Dutch cannons and pre-colonial artefacts.
