The Jaffna Fort was originally constructed by the Portuguese Philip de Oliviera in 1618. A few years later it was captured by the Dutch, whom in turn expanded it and constructed up the existing archway that reads Anno 1680. Unfortunately, the Fort that stood in pristine condition for some 350 years was reduced to rubble during the civil conflict. Reading up on its history and the brilliance of its architectural strategy and seeing the lumps of stone it's now reduced to is pretty painful. If anything, the ruins of Jaffna Fort are a testament to the sheer, futile brutality of human aggression.
Jaffna's fort has been fought over for centuries. Today you're free to explore its walls, admire its gateways and moats, study some exhibits and view the city from its ramparts.

யாழ்ப்பாணம் கோட்டை/Jaffna fort /jaffna/selfy with lanka /srilanka
Yapanaya Balakotuwa) is a fort built by the Portuguese at Jaffna, Sri Lanka in 1618 under Phillippe de Oliveira following the Portuguese invasion of Jaffna. The fort is located near Karaiyur. Due to numerous miracles attributed to the statue of Virgin Mary in the church nearby, the fort was named as Fortress of Our Lady of Miracles of Jafanapatão (Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres de Jafanapatão). It was captured by the Dutch under Rijcklof van Goens in 1658 who expanded it. In 1795, it was taken over by the British, and remained under the control of a British garrison till 1948. As the only large military fort in the country, due to the presence of only government and military buildings within its ramparts, it was garrisoned by a detachment of the Ceylon Army.(wiki)
JAFFNA SRI LANKA TRIP | JAFFNA FORT AND MUST SEE PLACES
Today I took the Jaffna city tour around Jaffna going to the best
places to visit in Jaffna. The Jaffna trip highlight was visiting the Jaffna fort which was built by the Portuguese at Jaffna, Sri Lanka in 1618. Buildings inside the fort include the Governor's residence (King's House), Queen's House, Kruys Church, the Garrison Parade Ground, Police quarters and several buildings from the Portuguese era. I hope you enjoy the sightseeing video around Jaffna as much as I did.

Jaffna Fort, Sri Lanka | HD
Jaffna Fort is a fort built by the Portuguese at Jaffna, Sri Lanka in 1618 under Philip De Olivera following the Portuguese invasion of Jaffna.
Jaffna Fort, the second biggest Dutch fort built in Sri Lanka is an archaeological monument that has had a direct onslaught as a result of the recent 30 year armed conflict. Although a portion of its seaside rampart had been destroyed due to the conflict, the fort taken as a whole, has not undergone severe destruction.

Sri Lanka army refuse to vacate historical Jaffna Fort - August 01, 2018
The Sri Lanka military chief vowed to continue with the occupation of a threatened historical fortress in a majority Tamil area despite protests. “The army had been here for many generations,” Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake visiting troops stationed in the fortress told journalists in Jaffna. “When you say it is a fortress, it very simply means that the fortress belongs to the military. Nobody else.”

Jaffna Fort is being rebuilt 20 9 09
Plans are afoot to conserve the historic Fort in Jaffna for the benefit of the future generation.
Our Special Representative Aruna Jayakody said the programme has been chalked out with the mediation of the Department of Archaeology.
Jaffna Fort spans more than 15 acres. It was built during the Portuguese period. Thereafter, the Fort was demolished and rebuilt by the Dutch. The Fort built by the Dutch now stands in Jaffna. A special meeting was held to thrash out decisions on the initiatives that should be taken to conserve the fort. Northern Governor G.A. Chandrasiri chaired the meeting. Commissioner General for Archaeology Senarath Dissanayake said the Jaffna Fort will be rebuilt maintaining its pristine glory.
Re-development programmes are afoot to enable the public to view all sites of archaeological interest based in Jaffna with the return of peace to the Peninsula. The archaeological reconstructions are in place in parallel to the Uthuru Wasanthaya programme.

Jaffna Fort - Sri Lanka

As the only large military fort in the country, due to the presence of only government and military buildings within its ramparts, it was garrisoned by a detachment of the Ceylon Army.
With the onset of the Sri Lankan Civil War, it came under siege on several occasions and was the scene of pitched battles. From 1986 to 1995 it was under the control of the LTTE during this time the LTTE destroyed several of key features to stop the Army getting control due to the site being used to stage attacks but it was recaptured by the Sri Lanka Army in 1995 after a 50-day siege during Operation Riviresa. It was also vandalised by locals to rebuild houses damaged from the war. Today it remains garrisoned by a detachment of the Sri Lanka Army with limited access to visitors and is being renovated with Dutch funding.[1]
Buildings inside the fort include the Governor's residence (King's House), Queen's House, Kruys Church, the Garrison Parade Ground, Police quarters and several buildings from the Portuguese era.

History and Inception
The palace was the home to the Aryacakravarti dynasty which became a powerful force in the North, North-East and the West of the islands prior to the conquest of the Portuguese into the island.[1]
According to Ibn Batuta, a renowned Moroccan historian, the kingdom had two capitals;Nallur was one and the other being Puttalam presently in the Western Province.[2][3]
Architecture
Main articles: Mantri Manai and Yamuna Eri
Ruins of foundation of the Cankilian Thoppu, which is away from the current Cankilian Thoppu, and considered as another facade of the palace.
The construction of the Royal Palace has been ordered by Cinkai Ariyan Cekaracacekaran. But, another source says the palace and a flower garden was built by a Tamil king named Koolanghai in 104 AD.[4]
There were two main roadways and four temples at the four gateways that have now been destroyed. The rebuilt temples that exist now do not match their original locations which instead are occupied by churches erected by the Portuguese. The center of the city was Muthirai Santhai (market place) and was surrounded by a square fortification around it. There were courtly buildings for the Kings, Brahmin priests, soldiers and other service providers in the palace premises. The old Nallur Kandaswamy temple functioned as a defensive fort with high walls. In general, the palace and the city was laid out like the traditional temple towns in South India.[4][5]
Destruction
The Jaffna Palace was significantly damaged during the Portuguese conquest of the Jaffna Kingdom. The fall of Cankili II, the last of the ruling dynasty at the hands of a 5000 men-strong Portuguese invaders inevitably meant the fall of the Jaffna Throne.[6]
Over the next 40 years, the Portuguese destroyed Hindu temples in the region, the royal repository of all literary output of the kingdom. Yamuna Eri, Cankili Thoppu archway, Ruins of foundation of the Cankilian Thoppu and Mantri Manai are few of the only remaining parts of the palace apart from several small monuments that dot the compound.[7][8]
