Places to see in ( Dornoch - UK )
Dornoch is a town and seaside resort, and former Royal burgh in the Highlands of Scotland. It lies on the north shore of the Dornoch Firth, near to where it opens into the Moray Firth to the east. The town is within the Highland local government council area, and within the county of Sutherland.
The name 'Dornoch' is derived from the Gaelic for 'pebbly place', suggesting that the area contained pebbles the size of a fist (dorn) which could therefore be used as weapons. Dornoch has the thirteenth-century Dornoch Cathedral, the Old Town Jail, and the previous Bishop's Palace which is now the well-known hotel, Dornoch Castle and a notable golf course, the Royal Dornoch Golf Club, named the 5th best golf course outside the United States in 2005 by Golf Digest magazine.
It is also notable as the last place a witch was burnt in Scotland. Her name was Janet Horne; she was tried and condemned to death in 1727. There is a stone, the Witch's Stone, commemorating her death, inscribed with the year 1722. The golf course designer Donald Ross began his career as a greenkeeper on the Royal Dornoch links. The golf course is next to the award-winning blue flag beach.
Dornoch used to be connected to the main railway network at The Mound via a light railway. The railway was opened on 2 June 1902. Stations on the line were Dornoch, Embo, Skelbo, Cambusavie Halt and The Mound Junction. The stations were shut on 13 June 1960. Dornoch was a parliamentary burgh, combined with Dingwall, Kirkwall, Tain and Wick in the Northern Burghs constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1708 to 1801 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1918. Cromarty was added to the list in 1832.

UK: MADONNA: WEDDING PREPARATIONS WRAP
English/Nat
Final preparations are under way for Thursday evening's baptism of the son of pop star Madonna and her film director boyfriend Guy Ritchie.
Security guards kept watch at both entrances to 17th century Dornoch Cathedral in the Scottish Highlands in Britain where four-month-old Rocco is to be christened.
The ceremony, which takes place on the eve of the couple's wedding, will be conducted by local minister the Rev. Susan Brown.
Around 45 guests are expected to attend the private event, including church elders and celebrity friends.
Local florists have already delivered blooms to decorate the historic cathedral.
Music superstar Sting will sing at the christening and Madonna herself is also rumoured to be planning to perform a rendition of a traditional hymn.
Security was tightened around the cathedral as hundreds of media personnel from around the world gathered for the christening.
Outside the cathedral, police have set up barriers to keep crowds at bay and issued a warning that anyone crossing them faces the prospect of spending Christmas in jail.
They would not be released until December 27 because of public holidays.
Officers have already had to settle a number of altercations between reporters vying for space.
As well as Sting, stars expected to attend include newly wed Hollywood heart-throb Brad Pitt and his wife Jennifer Aniston and actress Gwyneth Paltrow.
The final legal arrangements were also completed on Thursday for Madonna and Ritchie's wedding.
The couple are due to wed in a star studded ceremony at the luxurious Skibo Castle in the Highlands on Friday, 24 hours after the christening of their baby son Rocco at nearby Dornoch Cathedral.
Dornoch registrar Lesley Conner delivered the wedding banns, which were posted on December 6, to the couple this morning.
Under Scots law, a couple getting married must collect the banns prior to their wedding, except in special circumstances such as security reasons.
The Scottish Executive confirmed special arrangements had been made for the registrar to deliver the banns to the couple, to the disappointment of waiting reporters and photographers.
However, when Conner arrived at the register office on Thursday morning, she was keeping tight-lipped about the situation, claiming she was simply late for work.
She later handed out the statement to photographers, cameramen and reporters who had gathered outside the office hoping to have caught a glimpse of the famous couple.
It said the arrangements had been made for the delivery of the banns on the advice of the General Register Office.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Basically, the cars will arrive, the guests will disembark from the cars into the cathedral, where a private ceremony will take place. They'll then obviously come out and head back to Skibo for, I imagine, a nice christening party. But a lot of the people who are here today, hopefully they'll see some celebrities, hopefully give some well wishes to the happy couple.

Stainless Steel Brandless, Cuan Mor
I visited this place as the cheap lunches were on offer. Burgers are nice, I'd certainly say that.
The toilets are a bit different though. It's a modern place so I expected modern stuff anyway, but hopefully slightly tasteful. You go up a large staircase so I thought there may be decent toilets up ahead, with recent walls and floors supporting my idea.
Err...no. Stainless steel urinal trough, stainless steel basins, why is stainless steel in fashion? Anyway, on to the cubicles.
More stainless steel. Ick. No idea what brand, possibly Armitage Shanks? Anyway, it's on a low level boxed in cistern. There's still rare Twyford step levers here, at foot height and everything which is cool, except sadly they're now redundant, the misery completed by replacing them with cheap n tacky buttons.
The flushes are boring, and fairly weak too, and short, and dull. They don't look too weak, but it took two flushes to get rid of three pieces of paper.

Scottish Episcopal Church takes gay marriage step
The Scottish Episcopal Church's General Synod has made the first steps of any Anglican Church in the UK towards allowing gay marriage in church.
The synod voted that a change to its Canon law governing marriage should be sent for discussion to the church's seven dioceses.
A further vote will happen at next year's synod.
The proposal would remove the doctrinal clause which states that marriage is between a man and a woman.
There would be a conscience clause for those who would not want to conduct a same-sex marriage.
The synod vote received support from five of seven bishops, 69% of the clergy and 80% of the laity - indicating that it has a good chance of succeeding when it returns next year.
If passed it would means Scottish Episcopals would become the first major church in the UK to marry gay and lesbian couples in church.
This level of action is not happening within the Church of England, which will not conduct gay marriages, or allow clergy to be in a same-sex marriage.
The Scottish move could intensify the split within the wider Anglican Communion of 85 million Christians.
In January the Communion sanctioned the US Episcopal Church when it decided to allow gay marriage in church.
The church's leader, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has struggled to keep the Communion together over the issue.
Lambeth Palace said the archbishop would not be commenting on the decision.
'Differing views'
Speaking after the vote, the secretary-general of the Anglican Communion, Archbishop Josiah Idowu-Fearon, said: The churches of the Anglican Communion are autonomous and free to make decisions about policy.
Today's decision is only the first step in the process of changing canon law on marriage.
I would echo what the Archbishop of Canterbury said recently in Zimbabwe on same-sex marriage: there are differing views within the Anglican Communion but the majority one is that marriage is the lifelong union of a man and woman.
He also stressed our primates' opposition to the criminalisation of LGBTIQ people.
Same sex marriage became legal in Scotland at the end of 2014 but Scotland's main churches - the Church of Scotland and the Roman Catholic Church - opposed the move.
The legislation was designed to allow religious and belief bodies to opt-in if they wanted to perform same-sex marriages.
The Scottish Episcopal Church is a Christian church with an estimated 90,000 adherents in Scotland.
Its synod is being held at St Paul's and St George's Church in Edinburgh.
The Right Reverend Dr Gregor Duncan, Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway and acting convener of the church's Faith and Order Board, said: The synod's decision this year is important because it represents the beginning of a formal process of canonical change.
The church has been engaged in recent years in a series of discussions at all levels.
The current process will enable the Church come to a formal decision on the matter.
Keith Porteous Wood, of the National Secular Society, said: This will put huge pressure on the Anglican and the many other churches to wave through same sex religious marriage. It is just a matter of time before more do so.

UPDATE: Returned here today (27/02/16) and these Rodbourns are thankfully no longer in here. Now there is just one cubicle, and in that cubicle is a LLBIPB N&C toilet. Now whilst they're not my favourites by all means, they're much better than those hideous Rodbournes.
