Rare video of India in the 1920's: famous Jain Temple in Kolkata
In the late 1920's, American tourists created this series of short 16mm films to document their trip to India, Nepal, and Tibet. Here they visit a famous Jain Temple in Kolkata. The elaborately decorated temple was built in 1867 to honor Pareshnath, the 23rd Jain Tirthankara (also known as a Jina, or teacher who helps followers achieve enlightenment). The temple, its sculptures, and surrounding gardens are actually brightly-colored and a beautiful oasis within the city.
