The Desert Palace - Traditional Dance - Jaisalmer - The Golden City - Rajasthan - India
Jaisalmer nicknamed The Golden city, is a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan, located 575 kilometres (357 mi) west of the state capital Jaipur.
The town stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone, and is crowned by the ancient Jaisalmer Fort. This fort contains a royal palace and several ornate Jain temples. Many of the houses and temples of both the fort, and of the town below, are built of finely sculptured sandstone. The town lies in the heart of the Thar Desert (the Great Indian Desert) and has a population, including the residents of the fort, of about 78,000.
Built in 1156 by the Bhati Rajput ruler Jaisal, Jaisalmer Fort, situated on Meru Hill and named as Trikoot Garh has been the scene of many battles. Its massive sandstone walls are a tawny lion colour during the day, turning to a magical honey-gold as the sun sets.
The famous Indian film director Satyajit Ray wrote a detective novel and later turned it into a film − Sonar Kella (The Golden Fortress) which was based on this fort.
About a quarter of city's population still live inside the fort. The main attractions inside the fort are: Raj Mahal (Royal palace), Jain temples and the Laxminath temple.

Nathmal Ki Haveli, Jaisalmer
One of the notable Jaisalmer attractions, Nathmalji-ki-Haveli primarily served as the residence of Diwan Mohata Nathmal who was the Prime Minister of the palace. There is a very interesting story regarding its construction. It is said that the two brothers started building different facets of havelis simultaneously. In those days there were no such instruments, which could keep a track on continuity and thus when this building came up finally it had irregular shape. Other than these, there are pictures engraved on pillars and walls. It presents a harmonious blend of indigenous architectural styles of the Rajputs and Muslims.

Jaisalmer is a former medieval trading center and a princely state in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, in the heart of the Thar Desert. Known as the Golden City, it's distinguished by its yellow sandstone architecture. Dominating the skyline is Jaisalmer Fort, a sprawling hilltop citadel buttressed by 99 bastions. Behind its massive walls stand the ornate Maharaja's Palace and intricately carved Jain temples.
Narrow alleys connect the fort's many shops, restaurants and hotels. Dotting the town below are a number of havelis, or traditional Rajasthani mansions. The Patwon Ki Haveli is a notable example, adorned with carved balconies and arches. The Desert Culture Centre contains historic Rajasthani relics, while the Thar Heritage Museum focuses more generally on the region's history. Gadsisar Lake is surrounded by small temples and the Folklore Museum, a trove of local arts and crafts. The city is also a hub for scenic camel safaris through the nearby sand dunes.
This is a living fort and about a quarter of city's population still live inside the fort. The main attractions inside the fort are: Raj Mahal (Royal palace), Jaintemples and the Laxminath temple.
Jain heritage of JaisalmerEdit
Jaisalmer has been enriched by its Jain community, which has adorned the city with beautiful temples, notably the temples dedicated to the 16th Tirthankara, Shantinath, and 23rd Tirthankara, Parshvanath.
There are seven Jain temples in total which are situated within the Jaisalmer fort built during 12th and 15th centuries. Among these temples, the biggest is the Paraswanath Temple; the others are Chandraprabhu temple, Rishabdev temple, Shitalnath Temple, Kunthunath Temple, and Shantinath Temple. Known for their exquisite work of art and architecture that was predominant in the medieval era the temples are built out of yellow sandstone and have intricate engravings on them.
Jaisalmer boasts some of the oldest libraries of India which contain rarest of the manuscripts and artifacts of Jain tradition. There are many pilgrimage centers around Jaisalmer such as Lodhruva (Lodarva), Amarsagar, Brahmsar and Pokharan.

Patwon Ki Haveli, Jaisalmer
The Patwon ki Haveli was built in 1818 by Guman Chand a gold and silver trader. This is one of the largest and most elaborate Havelis in Jaisalmer and stands in a narrow lane. This was the fist haveli in jaisalmer and is a cluster of five small havelis. These five havelis were built for his five sons. This beautiful sandstone mansion is carved and pieced together in different patterns. The lavish havelis showcases their beauty of craftsmanship in the stone carving.
These havelis are said to be the most photographed structures in India, second only to the Taj Mahal. This has been the star attraction of Jaisalmer. The splendid monument adds to the old glory and grandeur of the place. It is not possible to capture every detail of this marvel in camera.

Jaisalmer Fort locally known as Sonar Quila is one of the largest forts in the world located in Jaisalmer City in Rajasthan, India. It was built in 1156 AD by the Bhati Rajput ruler Rao Jaisal, from where it originates its name. This fort is popularly known as the 'Sone Ka Quila (Golden Fort)' by the local people and is one of the most magnificent monuments in the city of Jaisalmer. The fort is standing proudly in the middle of the unending golden sands of Thar Desert.
Jaisalmer fort is 1,500 ft (460 m) long and 750 ft (230 m) wide and is built on a hill that rises above a height of 250 ft (76 m) above the surrounding countryside. The basement of the fort has a 15 ft (4.6 m) tall wall forming a double line of defense. The bastions of the fort forms a chain about 30 ft (9.1 m). The fort has four entrances to the downside, one of which used to be guarded by cannon.

Jaisalmer Fort
Jaisalmer to me seemed most artistic city of Rajasthan for almost every second house seemed a work of art.Bricks are hardly used for stones are easily available. And then in the middle of the city is Jaisalmer fort sitting on a low hill, you know like in Nainital we have a city around the Lake here we have a city around a fort.Plus we have this walled fort area above on the hill which is a small city in itself. It has narrow lanes dotted by many Jain Temples and ancient Havelis.
I had visited Ambedkar Park in Gomti Nagar Lucknow few months back, seems like Ms Mayawati or the architectures took inspiration from Jaisalmer. Those Palatial stone structures would certainly remind you of Jaisalmer, interestingly in Dilwara Temple you see row of marble elephants just like in many memorials including Ambedkar Park build by Ms Mayawati our ex Chief Minster.
Beyond the fort are the lanes housing multitude of shops selling things for you to take home. This market is so much like Aminabad in Lucknow.Down the main street adjacent to the hill is a vegetable market too and there are some fruit vendors in front of it.For the first time I tasted raw dates.
There are several good Restaurants,Desert Safari Tourism,Camel Leather goods and metal and stone works.Behind Neeraj Hotel is the Bus stand and in front of it is a Temple.People are nice and friendly and you see a lot of Europeans wandering the labyrinthine streets care-freely even in July when sometimes its hot and humid while other-times it may get cloudy cool and breezy.
My guide,my Auto driver Prakash was really nice and informative allowed me to take as much time I wanted to wander around and take snaps and videos. When inside fort we kept in contact by mobile phone. He may be around 20,really attractive with nice colorful ear-rings like flower petals. In Rajasthan its very common for men to wear some sort of ear ornament. He told me they had scanty rainfall this Monsoon, dark black clouds hover over the city and just go away with out raining. In Truecaller app his name came as Auto Parkash Jaisalmer Mobile No. 09001597644.Call him if you ever visit Jaisalmer,it was nice to be shown around the city by a guy who was born here and love his city so much.

Jaisalmer City Guide | India Travel Video in Rajasthan Transcript:
After an 18 hour overnight train ride from Delhi, we finally reached Jaisalmer, a city of yellow sandstone that lies in the middle of the Thar Desert. This proved to be my favourite stop of our month long adventure in India; now let me take you on a tour and show you why.
With so much colour all around us, it wasn’t long before we were lured into a shop and found ourselves picking out souvenirs in the form of wall hangings, pillow cases, and a small painting or two. Our luggage gained an extra couple of pounds in this city alone.
But it wasn’t all shopping in Jaisalmer. We also made time to do a bit of sightseeing inside the fort, and one of the main attractions here are the Jain Temples.
Another thing we’d recommend doing in Jaisalmer is having dinner on a rooftop restaurant while the sun sets. There are plenty of restaurants scattered across the city and the views you get as the sun goes down are amazing. We chose one at random and it included a live music performance.
The following day was all about visiting the Thar Desert on an afternoon camel trek. It was a nice change of pace from the city, and we got to enjoy a traditional meal cooked over a campfire.
The next morning we went back to the fort because we just couldn’t stay away. I visited the Jaisalmer Fort Palace Museum & Heritage Center, while Sam and his mom picked up a few additional gifts for family back home.
