Kurdish families forced to squat in mosque
(7 Dec 2017) LEADIN:
Displaced by violence, a group of Kurds from Tuz Khormato take shelter in a mosque outside Kirkuk.
STORYLINE:
This mosque has become more than just a place of worship.
It is just one of the buildings housing some of the 300 displaced Kurdish families in the village of Qader Qaram, about 50 miles (80 kilometres) east of Kirkuk in northern Iraq.
Other families have taken shelter in empty houses in the village.
They were displaced when Iraqi forces took control of the town of Tuz Khormato, south of Kirkuk, on 16 October.
Tuz Khormato, a mixed town of Kurds, Turkmen and Arabs, has seen sporadic ethnic violence since 2003.
In the last three years it was under the joint control of Kurdish peshmerga forces, Shiite Turkmen militia and Iraqi police.
When the Kirkuk governorate was taken over by Iraqi forces in October, the peshmerga withdrew and many local Kurdish civilians fled with them.
One of the women displaced, Sabiha Najim, says that it is not safe for them to return.
There was a fight and then we left. Now we, all these women and children, are living in this pile of rubbish. No single government has helped us. We can't go back. We can't. If the government doesn't protect us, we can't go back. What can we do there? Our house was demolished. If the government doesn't help us, where can we go?
According to Amnesty International, at least 11 civilians were killed in indiscriminate violence the day the town changed hands, while hundreds of properties were destroyed or looted in apparently targeted attacks on Tuz Khormato's Kurdish areas.
Another women cries as she recalls the violence.
They kicked us out. Those cruel people did that to us. We lost everything. We lost our place and left everything behind, says Khanem Fathullah.
Fathullah has become sick and says there is no doctor nearby to help them.
According to the United Nations, over 35,000 civilians fled Tuz Khormato since 16 October.
It is not known how many have returned.

Mosque offers exercise class after prayers
(22 Feb 2019) LEADIN:
Worshippers attending morning prayers at a mosque in Halabja now get an exercise class thrown in too.
The young Imam of the mosque is behind the idea, which is rapidly growing in popularity.
STORYLINE:
Running on the spot, these men of all ages are getting their daily work out.
But they're not at the gym - this is Bahasht mosque in the city of Halabja in the northern Kurdish region of Iraq.
All of those exercising have already attended dawn prayers this morning.
The mosque's young Imam, Mihreban Hama Said, is behind the concept:
I got the idea from the fact that a mosque should not only be a place to worship God, he says.
A worshipper, via exercises, can learn how to be patient and calm.
He says this especially helps him when he wants to read them extra verses during the prayers!
Said says more young people are now attending the dawn prayer at his mosque and his exercise class is growing in popularity.
Once the worshippers finish the prayer, they take their coats off and warm up.
Those who attend the class are aged from 13 all the way up to 70 - and they tackle a variety of basic exercises.
The Imam offers the exercise class twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays.
By doing exercises your body will be relieved and get comfort. If you are always asleep or sit in one place all the time, the body will be stiff and the blood will not move at all, says one worshipper, Mustafa Abdulkarim.
Another, Alan Gharib, adds:
It has been two days that I've been coming here, and my goal is to keep my body fit, lose weight and improve my breathing.
Halabja is a city in the northeast of Iraq on the border with Iran. It is known as being a conservative Kurdish city, with a population of over 200,000.
