Jalpesh Mandir, Jalpesh, Maynaguri, Jalpaiguri, North Bengal | Kanwariya Yatra | Jalpesh Temple
Jalpesh Mandir is a mythological and famous temple of Lord Shiva, located at Jalpesh near Maynaguri of Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal. During July-August which is the bengali month of Shravan, thousands of pilgrims come to Jalpesh Mandir which is called Kanwariya yatra to offer special puja to Lord Shiva, chanting “Bholey Bom”. A fair, Sravani Mela is organized around the temple area. Pilgrims also reach there during the month of February - March at the time of Shivratri to offer puja.
Bisu Singh, the king of Cooch Behar, was the founder of Jalpesh temple in the year 1524. He was the father of Maharaja Narayan who also later rebuilt the temple in 1563. 100 years later Pran Narayan, another king of Cooch Behar, rebuilt this temple in the year 1663 A.D. The special thing related to this temple is that the shiv linga is placed under water in the basement of the temple. Ananta Shiva Linga is worshipped here.
