Economic reggae: Jamaican bank sells recovery with songs
(18 Jun 2019) Jamaica's central bank thinks the country's economy is doing very well and it is using an instantly recognizable symbol of the island to get this message to the people: reggae music.
In the bank's latest video, reggae artist Tarrus Riley uses his throaty vocals to praise low, stable and predictable inflation as being what the bass-line is to reggae music.
Gimme little one drop, let the bass-line roll and kotch, reggae music run the country, Riley sings.
This and other Bank of Jamaica-produced videos have gone viral, with hundreds of thousands of views from around the world.
This offers us a real time, face-to-face interaction with several people all at once, said Brian Winter, Governor of the Bank of Jamaica.
Just over seven years ago, the government's debt was close to 150% of the country's GDP, unemployment was over 15%, and economic growth was just under 1% annually. Now, the debt-to-GDP ratio is set to fall below 100% in this year's budget, more people are employed than at any time in the country's history, with unemployment at 8%, and there have been 18 consecutive quarters of growth.
But the fruits of the recovery are still slow in trickling down to many Jamaicans, and many people have doubts.
So, the Bank of Jamaica decided to use of reggae to spread the government's message that the country is experiencing an economic turnaround.
According to experts, Jamaica was among the worst-performing economies in the world. It was plagued with low productivity, long-term stagnation and crippling debt.
Now the government has dramatically turned the economy around, he said, but people still need to be convinced that enduring a bit of pain to achieve overall economic growth is worth it.
One of the pillars of the economic recovery has been moving away from the currency exchange rate as a primary tool of monetary policy toward an inflation objective of between 4% and 6%.
Previously, the central bank focused on using exchange rate adjustments to keep prices of goods and services neither too low nor too high, but that resulted in swings that made it difficult for businesses to plan.
The bank now makes monetary decisions based on inflation, seeking a moderate but steady rise in prices.
The current 2% rate remains under the target, and the bank says that signals weakness in the economy.
Stable, predictable inflation helps people plan and budget.
While things are looking up, there is still much work to be done.
In poor communities, there is skepticism about the recovery.

'Run Free' Documentary Trailer (2018)
This documentary chronicles the evolution of the 'Run Free' project. 'Run Free' is the Jamaican extension of the National Theatre of Scotland’s theatre production JUMP. The project fuses physical theatre, storytelling and the movement discipline of Parkour – otherwise known as Free Running – into a devised theatrical production. Since March 2014 the National Theatre of Scotland and Manifesto Jamaica - supported by the British Council - have been working with 20 young men from Parade Gardens (a.k.a. Southside) in Kingston.
The mission: to create a space where the young men can tell their own stories; about their lives, which are considered at-risk and about their home town, which some consider a ghetto. Using the grace, flow and style of Parkour, participants explore the challenges and obstacles they face growing up in an age of unprecedented and unpredictable change. This video is a preview of our work-in-progress.
Participants in the Run Free project are young men, ages 13 to 21, from Parade Gardens in central Kingston, Jamaica. The initiative is conceptualized, financed and implemented through collaboration between the British Council, Glasgow Parkour Coaching, Manifesto Jamaica and the National Theatre of Scotland.

Wassi Art Jamaica Pottery Video Preview (St. Ann Jamaica)
Wassi Art is a treasure chest of unusual pottery that absolutely delights collectors and art lovers alike. Wassi Art is the perfect example of how love for art can evolve from a hobby to a flourishing enterprise. When the company was incorporated in 1992, Theresa Lee started off with three artists. Twenty years later, Wassi Art counts 30 employees and has made a name for itself far beyond Jamaica's coastline. Shop for the island's finest handcrafted pottery at this marvelous factory, where talented artists capture the island's essence through the love of their craft.
Wassi (wha-see) -- 'terrific' in old island dialect -- is the best description of the magnificent clay creations the artists at Wassi Art produce, and the Ocho Rios factory is now a 'must do' on the long list of Jamaican attractions.
Thus starts the evolution from a piece of clay to outstanding pottery: terracotta colored clay, dug by hand from the Blue Mountain ranges, is packed into rice bags and carried on heads across swaying footbridge strung across a deep gulch. Transported by truck to Wassi Art, the first step of production is to soak the clay in drums. Then, the clay is strained and poured into plaster vats to remove excess water.
Are you curious as to what happens next? Well, why not pay a visit to Wassi Art and find out first hand? Attend the free Wassi Art factory tour to learn how the beautiful vases, teapots, statues, cups and saucers reach the shelves of the Ocho Rios showroom or one of the many stores across the island. The free factory tour offers genuine cultural interaction combined with air-conditioned, harassment-free shopping and you can delight in watching the artists wield their magic. Famous visitors to the Wassi Art workshop include Kofi Annan, Shari Belafonte, Bryan Adams, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Jesse Jackson.
Considered unorthodox in ceramic art world, Wassi Art designs are brightly colored, one-of-a-kind, uninhibited and original pieces with broad appeal. The factory is located at 16 Main Street in the resort town of Ocho Rios.
