A Cliff Jumping Adventure in Vermont
The boys and I decided to head to Vermont to jump some quarries. We hit 40-50 foot cliffs at the first spot, 50-80 footers at the second, and a beautiful 70 foot slab to end the trip!

Mount Ascutney, Vermont - Travels With Phil
Mount Ascutney is the site of a State Park in eastern Vermont. At 2,270 feet above the surrounding territory, it has a great view from the summit. On a good day, you can see at least 4 states.
Mt Ascutney Recreational Trail Guide Link:
My Ascutney Parkway Brochure:
History: The origin of “Ascutney” is from the Abenaki “Cas-Cad-Nac,” meaning “mountain of the rocky summit;” an appropriate name for this prominent mountain peak rising abruptly from the Connecticut River valley. A permanent settlement, “Ascutegnik,” of peoples of the Cowasuck band of Abenaki tribe existed on lands near the mouth of the Sugar River. In modern geographic terms, this is across the Connecticut River from Ascutney Village on Route 131. Native peoples likely hunted, fished and camped around the mountain particularly at lower elevations.
Over time, European settlers adopted the place name “Ascutney” to refer to both the white settlement on the western side of the Connecticut River, and the prominent mountain peak. The mountain has long been featured in the history of Ascutney Village, the towns of Weathersfield and Windsor, which it lies in, and in the state of Vermont. Mount Ascutney was home to the first purposebuilt hiking trail in the United States. A group of local residents constructed a trail in 1825 to coincide with the visit of dignitary Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette (known commonly as General Lafayette, a French aristocrat and military officer in the American Revolutionary War). While Lafayette didn’t end up visiting the area, the trail became popular regionally. The next trail was built in 1858 and approximates the current-day Windsor Trail. This carriage-road style trail led to the high-elevation Tip Top House, which capitalized on summit tourism which was popular at the time. The modern trail system dates to the late 19th century and now consists of 4 base-to-summit trails on state land. The Ascutney Trails Association, the oldest trail organization in the United States, was formed in 1903. Park development occurred in the 1930’s as part of the Civilian Conservation Corps and in the early 1960’s with campground expansion,. The Futures Trail was built in 1983. Most recently, a new camping loop of cabins opened in 2018.
Across the river from Windsor, Vermont in the rural town of Cornish, New Hampshire, a collective of artists and sculptors settled with the peak of activity from the 1880’s to the 1930’s. Thus, the area became referred to as the Cornish Colony. Notable artists that lived in the area were Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Maxfield Parrish, Charles Platt, Thomas Dewing and writers Winston Churchill and J.D. Salinger. The estate of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is now Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park, part of the National Park System. - Travels with Phil copyrighted by Phil Konstantin -

Description
After Tropical Storm Irene ravaged the Vermont mountain town of Rochester, the people have been alon
HEADLINE: Vermont town in isolation after Irene
CAPTION: After Tropical Storm Irene ravaged the Vermont mountain town of Rochester, the people have been alone for nearly five days. The Associated Press travelled in to see how they were doing. (Sept. 1)
IN THE WAKE OF TROPICAL STORM IRENE'S WRATH ON NEW ENGLAND-THE VERMONT MOUNTAIN TOWN OF ROCHESTER HAS BEEN CUT OFF COMPLETELY FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLD SINCE THIS PAST SUNDAY.
IN SOME SPOTS OF VERMONT THE ONLY WAY TO GET IN IS TO WALK OR HIKE IT-I''M ABOUT TO DO THAT-ABOUT 5 MILES INTO ROCHESTER.
WE WANTED A CLOSER LOOK AT HOW THE PEOPLE THERE WERE SURVIVING
ONLY 1 MILE INTO THE TREK A CONSTRUCTION CREW AND YET ANOTHER ROAD MANFELED BY RUSHING WATERS
ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS MASSIVE HOLE WAS A HOME-OWNED BY THE MAILHIOT FAMILY-THE STRUCTURE WILL BE DESTROYED SOON-IT''S BARELY STANDING.
WE DON''T KNOW WHAT TO DO, EVERYTHING THAT WE OWN WAS IN THERE-WE HAVE NO CHECKING ACCOUNT, WE HAVE NO SAVINGS ACCOUT-WE ARE JUST GOING FROM ONE DAY TO THE NEXT.
JOE''S SON AND HIS FAMILY PULLED UP ON ATV''S TO BEGIN CLEANING THE FAMILY BELONGING OUT OF THE HOME.
IT TOOK A TOLL ON US, ITS LIKE ONE BIG DAY, IT JUST DOESN''T SEEM REAL.
IT''S SOMETHING YOU WOULD SEE IN A MOVIE AND THINK WOULD NEVER COME TRUE.
WITH ABOUT A 4 MILE WALK STILL TO GET INTO ROCHESTER JOE JR. JUST WOULDN''T ALLOW IT.
THAT INCREDIBLE FAMILY WAS NICE ENOUGH TO LOAN ME THEIR FOUR WHEELER TO GET INTO ROCHESTER-THE ONLY OTHER WAY FOR ME TO GET IN WOULD HAVE BEEN TO WALK-I GOT LUCKY.
THE FOUR OR SO MILES INTO TOWN WAS A PICTURE OF NATURE''S FURY
ROADS CUT APART BY VIOLENT WATER
RITA WAS ACCURATE-IT WAS EXACTLY LIKE A SOMETHING FROM A MOVIE.
UPON ARRIVAL-AT THE BASE OF THE TOWN WAS A MEETING
RESIDENTS WERE CONCERNED, THEN SOUNDS OF A HELICOPTER ECHOES THE VALLEY
SOLDIERS LANDED IN TWO CHOPPERS-THEY WERE THE ADVANCE TEAM-TALKING TOLOCALS ABOUT WHERE SUPPLIES AND PROVISION SHOULD BE DROPPED.
DOWN THE ROAD-A MAKE-SHIFT FOOT BRIDGE HAD BEEN BUILT-THIS IS THE ONLY WAY IN AND OUT FOR RESIDENTS.
WE HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO UTILITIES OF ANY KIND-THE ROAD IS GONE ON BOTH ENDS SO WE ARE BASICALLY TRAPPED ON AN ISLAND HERE.
ACROSS THE STREET, A DISTURBING REALITY
{VOICE-OVER]
COFFINS-SHAKEN FROM THE EARTH -TOSSED AND TOPPLED IN A RUNNING STREAM
THERE WAS ONE BODY THAT WASHED ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE HIGHWAY AND IT WAS MOSTLY JUST SKELETAL REMAINS AND THEY COVERED THAT UP WITH A TARP FOR TWO DAYS.
THE DRIVE BACK UP THE MOUNTAIN SHOWED MORE DEVASATATION IN EVERY DIRECTION
THESE PEOPLE ARE STRONG BUT SUPPLIES AND ROAD ACCESS NEEDS TO BECOME A RUSHED PRIORITY.
AS WE ARRIVED BACK AT THE MAILHIOT HOME-KIDS RAN ACROSS RUBBLE AS THE ADULTS WEATHERED THEIR FUTURE
THE MAILHIOT FAMILY IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY PEOPLE HURT BY TROPICAL STORM IRENE.

Prankster Tricks Wyoming City Into Growing Weed In Downtown Flower Pots
Park department employees in Powell, Wyoming, found marijuana budding out of decorative planters in the downtown area last week. The workers had been unwittingly watering and tending to the plants for weeks before realizing the growth spouting out of the zinnias and marigolds was illegal, reports the Powell Tribune. Powell Police Chief Roy Eckerdt told the local news outlet that he believes a prankster put marijuana seeds in the 100-gallon flower pots. City workers only realized what was growing “once everything started to leaf out.”

Hiking Mount Pisgah at Lake Willoughby - Vermont Hike
Mount Pisgah is a mountain in Westmore, Vermont. It is located on the east side of Lake Willoughby and constitutes the eastern side of Willoughby Gap (Willoughby Notch). It is part of the Northeastern Highlands of Vermont.
The cliffs contain alpine plants protected because no trails lead to or through them.
Lake Willoughby is a lake in the town of Westmore in Orleans County in the northeast section of Vermont, United States.
The lake's southern end is surrounded by the Willoughby State Forest. This state forest includes Mount Pisgah, Mount Hor, and Bartlett Mountain (Vermont).
The lake is about 5 miles (8.0 km) long
In 2010, Yankee magazine named Willoughby as the third best lake in New England.[2]
Willoughby Lake has a public beach that stretches 0.4 kilometres (0.25 mi) on the north shore of the lake, or in the zone of the lake outlet. Another public beach is located at the bottom of the South Bay of the Lake. The village of Westmore is located on the east side, at the confluence area of Mill Creek which drains the waters of Long Pond. Many cottages and houses are located on North-East bank of the lake.

The Vermont Country Store in Weston Vermont 9-24-2014
Although The Vermont Country store first opened in Weston, Vermont, in 1946, its origins lie in the Orton family’s long Vermont history. In 1897, Gardner Lyman Orton, the 8th generation of Ortons in the United States, opened a general store along with his father Melvin Teachout in Calais, Vermont. Gardner and his wife Leila's eldest son Vrest was born the same year. The Teachout-Orton store was the focal point of Vrest's early years and served as the original inspiration for The Vermont Country Store.
After serving in World War I, in France, Vrest entered the class of 1923 at Harvard and then served briefly in the U.S. Consular Service before moving to New York City in 1925. There he was on the staff of H.L. Mencken’s American Mercury, Alfred Knopf publishers, the Saturday Review of Literature, Life magazine, and in 1929 founded the international book collector’s magazine, The Colophon. During this time, Vrest became known as an authority on typography and book collecting and published many articles about various American writers. Vrest returned to Vermont in 1930 and settled in the village of Weston. He married Mildred Ellen Wilcox in 1936 and founded a book publishing company, The Countryman Press, the same year.
The interior of the store, 1946
Vrest and Mildred Orton, 1951
During World War II Vrest worked at the Pentagon as a speechwriter and publicist. There he hatched the idea of creating a catalog and store based on the Teachout-Orton store.

BOSTON: Autumn views of AMERICA'S OLDEST PARK (BOSTON COMMON, USA) ????️????
SUBSCRIBE: - Here's a quick view of Boston Common (during Fall or Autumn, noise from the fire trucks and police cars included) which is a central public park in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. Dating from 1634, it is the oldest city park in the United States. The Boston Common consists of 50 acres (20 ha) of land bounded by Tremont Street, Park Street, Beacon Street, Charles Street, and Boylston Street. The Common is part of the Emerald Necklace of parks and parkways that extend from the Common south to Franklin Park in Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, and Dorchester.
Boston is Massachusetts’ capital and largest city. Founded in 1630, it’s one of the oldest cities in the U.S. The key role it played in the American Revolution is highlighted on the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile walking route of historic sites that tells the story of the nation’s founding. One stop, former meeting house Faneuil Hall, is a popular marketplace.
The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
