James Fort (Irish: Dún Rí Shéamuis) is an early 17th century pentagonal fort located on Castlepark peninsula in Kinsale harbour. Situated downstream from Kinsale on the River Bandon, the fort was built to defend the harbour and seaborne approaches of the town. Following the construction of Charles Fort on the opposite side of the harbour in the late 17th century, James Fort became known as the old fort (Irish: an Seandaingean).[1][2] Listed as a protected National Monument, and managed by the Office of Public Works, the fort is open to visitors

Exploring James Fort, Kinsale - County Cork, Ireland on a sunny day
A sunny September day and a chance to explore the little known James Fort in Kinsale, Ireland.
Known in Irish as Dún Rí Shéamuis, construction at James Fort started in 1602 after the Siege of Kinsale in 1601.
It was in a ruined state for 200 years before being restored to what we see in the video here.

Located opposite Charles Fort, it has a commanding position guarding the small harbour of Kinsale. This fort was built in 1607 and was captured in 1690 by Williamite forces. The fort remains a most interesting example of 17th century military architecture and offers wonderful views of the town, river, harbour and Charles Fort.
