The Old Jamestown Windmill
Explored July 1st 2018
Historic Jamestown Rhode Island. If you are ever in the area I recommend stopping by this historical roadside windmill. Breathtakingly beautiful on an extremely scenic hill overlooking the Newport bridge. The area has lots to offer by way of historical interest from the many forts in the area to this little gem right here. Thank you for taking time to catch me while I travel the backroads and find beautiful and or abandoned places. Happy Exploring ????
Built in 1787 and in operation until 1896, the old Jamestown windmill stands high on Windmill Hill in the center of the island. It is a three-story octagonal structure with a domed cap or bonnet. The bonnet holds the sails and can turn to capture the wind from any direction.
The original framework of the mill is made of hand-hewn chestnut timbers. The exterior is sheathed in cedar shingles. The mill is maintained in working condition, and major renovations to repair damage from weather and insects were completed in 2000-2001.
The 30-foot (9.1 m) high windmill was built in 1787 to grind corn after the British occupational forces destroyed the previous mill around the time of the Battle of Rhode Island. It operated until 1896. Several renovations were done in the 20th century, and it is maintained by the Jamestown Historical Society. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

The only way possible to get on Route 138 westbound and off the islands was to go the wrong way down a highway offramp!
In Jamestown the following roads were washed over: Conanicus Ave at the marina, North Rd south of 138, Beavertail Rd at Mackerel & Sheffield Coves, East Shore Road at 138 interchange.

Jamestown Rhode Island (RI) Real Estate Tour
-- Tour Jamestown, RI neighborhoods, condominium developments, subdivisions, schools, landmarks, recreational areas, and town offices.
Jamestown, Rhode Island was incorporated on November 4, 1678, and was renamed in honor of Prince James, later King James II. Because it is an island, Jamestown has never been developed as a commercial area or port, but instead remains a quiet residential town.
In 1940, the Jamestown Verrazano Bridge was completed connecting Jamestown with the mainland. The Newport Bridge, completed in 1969, gave Jamestown access to both sides of Narragansett Bay. The island is 9.5 square miles in area, with a good highway system following most of its shoreline. The south end of Beaver Tail Light is a high rocky coast protruding into the Atlantic Ocean, where some of the best surfcast fishing in the world can be found. Narragansett Bay surrounds the northern end of the island.
Residents and visitors alike enjoy more than 300 years of rich history in the many museums and historical sites Jamestown offers. Among the popular sites are Narragansett Avenue, where the British marched in 1775 while burning the town; the Sydney L. Wright Museum, where Indian and colonial artifacts from pre-historic and early settlements are displayed; and the Jamestown museum, which offers memorabilia from the 300-year-old Jamestown Ferry System among other exhibits.
