The city of Ahmedabad is adorned with the beautiful mosque famous as the name Jami Masjid or also sometimes referred to as Friday Mosque or Jama Masjid. The mosque was construted during the ruling period of Ahmed Shah in the year 1424.The mosque is the part of old Ahmedabad and is located in the eastern direction of the famous Teen Darwaza just opposite to the Mahatma Gandhi Road. The architecture of Jama Masjid is remarkable.
The mosque houses the entombment of Sultan Ahmed Shah, Ahmed Shah 1, his son Mohammed Shah and his grandson Qutub-Ud-Din Ahmed Shah II. These entombments can be seen closer to the gate that is on the eastern side of the mosque. The material used for the construction of the mosque has been of excellent quality since the mosque has survived the drastic changes in the environmental condition.
It is the largest mosque that is part of the Indian subcontinent of the period when it was constructed. The architectural design of the mosque is very unique as it has its entrance from three different directions.
In the western direction of the mosque is located the entombments of Sultan Ahmed Shah and his son and grandson. The other entombments located in the mosque are of the queen and the wives of the sultans and are called as Rani Ka Hazira.
The color of the stone used for building the mosque was yellow in color. There is a large rectangle shaped quad that is located in the middle of the mosque and the size of this quad is 75 meters in length and 66 meters in its width. The mosque has the arcade in three different directions while the fourth remaining side of the mosque has a hall where the prayers are offered.

The 15th Century Jama Masjid Mosque, Ahmedabad, Gujarat
The Jama Masjid (Mosque) is located in the heart of old Ahmedabad and one of the most splendid mosques in India. Constructed in 1423 by Sultan Ahmed Shah, there are different entrances with one next to the tomb of the sultan.
Women are allowed to enter the Jama Masjid as long as they follow typical mosque etiquette: dress properly (arms covered, no shorts, take off shoes and be respectful. The unusual architecture is known as Ahmedabadi Architecture because of its mixture of Hindu, Jain and Islamic styles.
Jama Masjid is supported by 260 pillars and has 15 domes. Shah Ahmed Shah was extremely enlightened for the 15th century and had a special second floor section beyond latticed screens for women to pray in along with a separate entrance. Quite unlike today where women aren't allowed to enter for prayers.
A truly unique and interesting mosque...

The Jami Masjid Mosque (Ahmedabad - Gujarat - India)
(EN) The Jami Masjid of Ahmedabad is one of the biggest and oldest mosques of India, built by a Bahmani ruler Ahmed Shah I (1411-1442), the founder of Ahmedabad, in 1423. One of the major tourist attractions of Gujarat, Jami Masjid is known for its fine and amazing architecture. The Mosque has a total of 260 pillars supporting 15 domes at different elevations. The Jami Masjid also had tall minarets, which were destroyed in an earthquake.
Centered on a spacious 75 x 66 meters marble courtyard with entrances on three sides - west, south and north, the Jami Mosque is regarded as one of the most superb and imposing structures of its class in the world. The architecture of the Jami Mosque shows distinctive Hindu and Jain influence, clearly visible on the decorations of walls and the niches of the mosque. One of the distinct features of this Mosque is its royal gallery with beautiful and intricate stonework. There is also a long rectangular ablution tank in the center. The prayer hall of the mosque is a rectangular area with five symmetrical domes. The central Mihrab (position indicating the direction of the Holy Mecca) of the mosque has inscriptions commemorating its completion on January 4, 1424, by Sultan Ahmad Shah I. (Tourism of Gujarat)

Jami Masjid - Vijayapur Karnataka India
Ali Adil Shah I built this mosque in 986/1575, which is a finest example of architecture in its more restrained and classical mood. However, it was completed much later. Since it is an early example it has great affinity with the style of Bahmani architecture. But it interprets them in a more sumptuous manner. It is one of the largest mosques of the Deccan and is built on an orthodox plan with an open courtyard, enclosed by a wall.
The sanctuary is on the side. It is a large structure with a rectangular plan. The courtyard is square of 155 feet, each side and on its three sides are superb range of arches. The mosque consists of a large hall. The length of the façade is nine bays or aisles and the depth is five bays. This gives forty-five in the main structure of the mosque. Massive masonry square piers support the vaulted roof. The central dome covers an open space of nine bays. It has one exterior dome. Though each bay, within, has a domical ceiling, these are embedded in the thickness of the flat roof and do not rise above it. The smaller domical ceilings are flat and graceful.
The façade of the mosque does not have minars or kanguras. But these are present around the dome at the upper terrace. Over the façade arches projects a cornice supported by brackets.
On top of the mosque in the middle is a square arched clerestory supporting over it is a large hemispherical dome. It is a crowned by a massive metallic finial with the symbol of a crescent pointing upwards. The architectural style of the dome and its supporting structure resembles the Bahmani style of the architecture at Gulbarga. This mosque is two centuries later than the Bahmani style. Though the Adil Shahi conception in this mosque is based much on the constructional principle but it is more finer with sober and massive elegance of its forms and outlines and is more aesthectic. There are not much architectural ornamentation in this mosque. It is simple and dignified, complete in itself. The central archway is right in front of the central mirhab and is decorated with a foliated motif in colors and the spandrels have circular pattern in colors.
In interior of the mosque, the floor has been marked out in black lines upon its polished plaster into small compartment pointing towards Qibla as musallas or ja-i-namaz (or prayer space). There are 2,250 such compartments in the body of the main mosque. It seems this marking was done later on by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's orders. Aurangzeb also built the gateway of the mosque and extended the courtyard by about ninety feet. Behind the gateway are the upper floor of the eastern end of the mosque and its arches. Some of the unfinished work of the mosque was carried out by Aurangazeb.

Jumma Mosque (Jama or Jami Masjid) Ahmedabad, Gujarat Documentary film on Heritage.
Jama Masjid (literally Friday Mosque), also known as Jami or Jumma Mosque, is the most splendid mosque of Ahmedabad, built in 1424 during the reign of Ahmed Shah I. Lying in the old walled city, the mosque is situated outside Bhadra fort area, along the south side of the road extending from Teen darwaza to Manek chowk.
Built with yellow sandstone, the mosque complex is centered on a large rectangular courtyard 75 m long and 66 m wide. One enters the court by three entrances, one at the center of each side. The courtyard is lined with a colonnade on three sides, the prayer hall occupies the fourth (east) side. In the center of the courtyard is a rectangular basin for ablutions.
The prayer room is also rectangular and covered by four domes. In its Indo-Saracenic architecture, the mosque also contains many syncretic elements not necessarily obvious to the viewer: some of the central domes are carved like lotus flowers, and some of the pillars are carved with the form of a bell hanging on a chain. The wide open courtyard, floored with white marble, is ringed by a colonnade painted with giant Arabic calligraphy, and has a tank for ritual ablutions in the center. The mosque and arcades are built of beautiful yellow sandstone and carved with the intricate detail that mosques of this period are known for. While the two principal minarets flanking the main arched entranceway collapsed in the 1819 earthquake, their lower portions still stand. The main prayer hall has over 260 columns supporting the roof, with its 15 domes, making a walk through the hall a beautiful maze of light and shadows. The Wall of Prayer, the qibla is decorated. Pierced stone screens (the 'Jalis') are placed between the two pillars of the central openings. The main entrance is framed by two columns, the remains of two minarets (shaking minarets) which were destroyed by the earthquakes of 1819 and 1957.

Jama Masjid - Junagadh, Gujarat
Jami Masjid is known for its 140 pillars that support the ceiling of this mausoleum. The pillars were brought from Chudasana Palace. Located on the Mahatma Gandhi Road, these decorated Maqbaras were built in the 19th century for the Muslim rulers. Of all the tombs, the most magnificent is the one belonging to Mahabat Khan I that was constructed in 1892. This mausoleum has silver minarets, doors and staircases in winding patterns. Tourists can go to the Durbar Hall Museum, to view the assortment of royal stuff from the courts like thrones, palanquins, crystal chandeliers, silver chains and howdahs for the elephants.
