Tsunami warning in Apia
We were just shopping on the market in Apia when all of a sudden everybody ran away. First we didnt have a clue what was going on until it was announced in the samoa radio - tsunami warning. Everybody was urged to move to higher grounds immediately and even though everybody remained considerably calm, there was quite a traffic jam. Two way streets transformed instantly into one way streets - towards the mountains. We were quite scared.

We want to get to them first thing on Monday morning to make sure that our orders are prioritised, our orders are being followed, (we want to know) what's happening? We want it straight away. But if it's really urgent we have to come in on Sunday, but otherwise we have to wait until we come in on Monday, which is really Tuesday. By then, I mean they've prioritised other things.

I think Samoa is all prepared for it. We haven't heard too much. I guess they lose one day in the beginning, but I think everybody has, you know, got used to the idea that it is going to be changing, and I think they're very happy that, on the side of the business, Friday is Friday to them (Samoa), and Friday is Friday to us (Australia), and New Zealand.

If we book a return ticket, the airlines have changed all their systems according to their tickets, so we just receive the itinerary and it has all been done for us. So the good thing about it is that the airlines have to do the hard work by getting everything done and prepared for us travel agents.

Now that it's getting closer to the time, everybody is starting to get used to the idea that we are going to be on the same day, but different times. So I think it should be a big celebration out there (in Samoa) when it comes to them waking up on Saturday morning and, oops, it's Saturday morning now and not Friday morning, so it should turn out all right.

Connecting with cultural roots through Samoan language (PMC)
AUCKLAND, New Zealand: Language and culture can tell us a lot about where we come from. For these New Zealand-born Samoans this at the heart of truly understanding who they are.
They meet every Tuesday night, and come together as part of the 10-week Fa’amatai Bilingual class, run by the Pacific Education Centre (PEC).
The class is a stepping stone step those wanting to learn Samoan rituals and protocols.
The tutor of the class and also PEC Pasifika cultural adviser, Alaelua Taulapapa Leasoiloaifaleupolu Malesala, says the class is important as it allows the community to stay connected through language and culture.
“Many of our New Zealand-born Samoans and even some people that were born in Samoa travelled to Aotearoa at a very young age.
“They are now in positions of leadership in the New Zealand community which works with a lot of our Samoan community but they don’t have the ability to communicate with our Samoan people in the times that they do come together.”
