Kusama Yayoi, Matsumoto City Museum of Art, 2018
World famous Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama, born in 1929 here in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, is now 89 years old. Masumoto is holding a special citywide exhibition from March 3 to July 22, 2018. Today, I’ll introduce how to walk around and enjoy her works scattered around Mastumoto city. They are all within walking distance.
My channel, Japan Silhouette, features beautiful scenery, traditional culture, Origami arrangement, and the warm heart of the Japanese people.
I also visit other countries and record my impression about them, perhaps from a Japanese perspective.

Matsumoto Museum of Art - Quick Review
The Matsumoto Museum of Art has beautiful exhibits, great atmosphere, and is very easy to get to from downtown Matsumoto. Since many of the permanent exhibits are for people from or associated with Matsumoto, it’s a great place to get a feel for the city’s character. This museum might only take a couple of hours to go through, but I recommend making a little extra time to relax in the museum’s plaza. It’s also only a 10 minute walk to Agatanomori Park from the museum, so it’s a great idea to visit them back-to-back.
Highlights:
- Yayoi Kusama’s interior and exterior exhibits alone are worth the trip.
- I found Tamura Kazuo’s multi-frame landscapes captivating.
- There’s an area in Kamijo Shinzan’s exhibit where you can make your own calligraphy prints.
You can find more information about the museum here:

Kamikochi (上高地, Kamikōchi) is a popular resort in the Northern Japan Alps of Nagano Prefecture, offering some of Japan's most magnificent mountain scenery. It is open from mid to late April until November 15 and shuts down in winter. In 2014, Kamikochi is open from April 18 to November 15.
Kamikochi is a about 15 kilometer long plateau in the Azusa River Valley, about 1500 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by tall mountains.
Part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, Kamikochi has only been moderately developed with six hotels, several souvenir shops, mountain huts and hiking trails. Private cars are not allowed to enter Kamikochi, and access is only possible by bus or taxi. In the center of Kamikochi, a short walk from the bus terminal, stands the Kappabashi (Kappa Bridge). From the Kappabashi, hiking trails lead up and down the valley and towards the summits of the surrounding mountains.
The simplest way to enjoy a day in Kamikochi is by hiking the trails along Azusa River from Taisho Pond to Myojin Bridge. It is a mostly flat area and no hiking experience is needed and it takes only a few hours of time. However, the climbs to the surrounding peaks, are more challenging and only recommended between mid June and mid September.

Looking North: Traditional Music from Northern Japan
Baisho Matsumoto and ensemble give a short talk and concert featuring traditional Japanese instruments.
For more than 35 years, Matsumoto has performed all over the world in the folk music style associated with Northern Japan. He plays tsugaru-jamisen, a version of a traditional Japanese stringed instrument that has a thicker neck and is played in a percussive and powerful manner.
This program was co-sponsored by Satsuki-Kai, a Japanese organization devoted to sharing Japanese culture with Bay Area communities.

We could have taken a more direct route to Matsumoto, in the form of a 2 hour bus journey, which literally went through the mountains.
Instead we took advantage of our Japan Rail Pass and caught this train, which first took us south to Nagoya.
EXPLORING TOKYO'S oldest and historic SHINTO SHRINE (Suwa Shrine), JAPAN
SUBSCRIBE: - Suwa Shrine has long been famous for its big festival, called Nagasaki Kunchi (held on October 7-9 each year), and it is one of the largest in Japan, in terms of both the number of participants and the number of spectators. It has been designated by the government as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. The whole neighborhood is filled with people dancing, carrying unusual palanquins, and pulling floats, while the traditional festival chants echo all around.
Japan is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean with dense cities, imperial palaces, mountainous national parks and thousands of shrines and temples. Shinkansen bullet trains connect the main islands of Kyushu (with Okinawa's subtropical beaches), Honshu (home to Tokyo and Hiroshima’s atomic-bomb memorial) and Hokkaido (famous for skiing). Tokyo, the capital, is known for skyscrapers, shopping and pop culture.

We spent a couple of days in Matsumoto.
Although we are 174 kilometres from Tokyo when a typhoon hit Japan during September 2013, we still experienced the effects here in Matsumoto when the Metoba River rose quite substantially.
It is said that when the city was growing into a castle town during the Edo Period the river was part of the Matsumoto Castle moat.
Chiba Castle - 千葉城 - 4K Ultra HD
Chiba Castle - 千葉城 : Located a good hour away from Tokyo and in Chiba City, the Chiba Castle or Inohana-jo, was first built in 1126 by Tsuneshige Chiba. He was the first ‘gunji’ administrator of Sōma District, and was then transferred to the same position in Chiba District.
For many centuries, the Chiba family ruled over the area from this castle. Then in 1455, Makuwari Yasutane, a relative of the Chiba family, attacked and defeated them resulting in the castle’s demise. Thanks to his lineage Makuwari Yasutane took over the name of the Chiba family and decided to build his own castle, the Honsakura Castle, in the nearby city of Sakura, leaving the first Chiba family’s castle in ruins.
It was only in 1967, that the City of Chiba decided to give Chiba Castle a second life with a new and modern design. Though it is far removed from what the first castle built in 1126 looked like, it now doubles as the city’s official folk museum

Bon-Uta, A Song from Home
Devastated by the East Japan Earthquake and nuclear crisis, the people of Futaba Town may never return to their homes. Nakae Yuji of Nabbie's Love directs this documentary about people from Futaba Town in Fukushima Prefecture. The residents find hope and inspiration when they learn that Fukushima Ondo, a 'bon-uta' (Bon Dance song) from their region, continues to be performed in Hawaii. Through their exchange with Maui Taiko, they head to Maui to see the dance being performed.
