Kenya, digitizing traditional culture
Culture is identity and identity is very important... When an elder dies, it's like a library burning down so we want to get that knowledge before this generation goes.
They are the Maasai in Kenya and their centuries old culture is at risk of disappearing.
Armed with audio recorders, laptops and cameras, John and Ann travel deep into the communities to document valuable cultural expressions handed down by generations of Maasai elders.
The video also looks at WIPO's assistance to the Maasai community in protecting and preserving their rich cultural heritage.

Thanks to Can Do Tours ( for arranging this amazing Ghanaian food experience for me.
From Cape Coast, Ghana, we drove inland to Kumasi, a major city in the central Ashanti Region of Ghana. I was excited to sample authentic Ashanti food, and to spend just a short time exploring Kumasi. The drive from Cape Coast took about 4 hours.
Fufu for Lunch - When we arrived, we were all quite hungry and so we stopped at a local chop bar (Ghanaian local food restaurant) for lunch. I’m not really sure of the name of this spot, or I don’t even think it really had a name written on it. But it was a popular neighborhood spot, especially known for their fufu - a West African staple food of pounded plantain and cassava. I had it along with a mix of palm nut soup and a variety of meats.
Fufu mix - 18 GHC ($3.80) per bowl
Ashanti Food Cooking in Kumasi, Ghana -
The main activity food activity of the day was meeting a host family and going to their home to cook and experience authentic Ashanti Ghanaian food. Before going home, we stopped at a local market in Kumasi to buy some vegetables, and some essentials for the cooking, especially taro leaves.
Kontomire stew - I didn’t really know what we’d be cooking, but learned it was a dish called kontomire stew, a stew made from fermented fish for flavor and mostly taro leaves (also called cocoyam in Ghana). The leaves were boiled and ground with garlic and spices, then doused in boiling palm nut oil to finish it. The dish was served with boiled green plantains and cocoyams that you could dip into the kontomire stew. It was also amazing to eat with avocado, and the highlight of my day was eating with the entire family.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Moscow is the seat of power for the Russian Federation. At the centre of the city, in the Central Administrative Okrug, is the Moscow Kremlin, which houses the home of the President of Russia as well as national governmental facilities. This includes military headquarters and the headquarters of the Federal Security Service. Moscow is designated as one of three federal cities of Russia—the others being Saint Petersburg and Sevastopol.
2. The Kremlin used to look a lot different than it does now. Historical pictures of the Moscow Kremlin’s “red” walls indicate that they used to be white, even as late as the end of the 19th century.
3. Moscow is home to a record number of dollar billionaires. According to Forbes magazine, the world’s richest are constantly drawn to Moscow. In 2012, it even topped the list of cities with the largest number of permanently resident billionaires.
4. The Moscow Metro is the busiest and largest in Europe and the sixth in the world by daily passenger traffic. The Moscow Metro is considered as the most beautiful underground on the earth. It’s not just a convenient way to move around the city, but also is one of its main sights, a cultural spot, where even guided tours are held annually.
5. Moscow is the major political, economic, cultural, and scientific center of Russia and Eastern Europe, as well as the largest city (both by population and by area) entirely on the European continent. By broader definitions, Moscow is among the world's largest cities, being the 14th largest metro area, the 18th largest agglomeration, the 14th largest urban area, and the 11th largest by population within city limits worldwide. According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the ninth most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the world's largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, and is also one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world according to the MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and coldest megacity on Earth. It is home to the Ostankino Tower, the tallest free standing structure in Europe; the Federation Tower, the second-tallest skyscraper in Europe; and the Moscow International Business Center.
6. Though Moscow is the capital city of Russia today, it wasn't always so. From 1712 to 1918, St. Petersburg acted as the capital of Russia. Peter the Great had moved the capital in his efforts to westernize the Russian Empire. The Bolshevik Revolution prompted the capital's move back to Moscow.
7. In the 1930s, almost all the residents of Moscow’s House on the Embankment disappeared. After Moscow became Russia’s new capital city in 1918, it was decided that a residential building would needed to house the country’s relocated civil servants. ‘The House of Government’, as it was known then, was a luxurious living space, boasting a communal cinema, salon, tennis court and other amenities. But it came at a cost. During Stalin’s Great Purge of 1937-1938, 800 residents of the building were arrested or killed. It had the highest number of arrests and executions per capita out of all of Moscow’s apartment buildings, earning the building its moniker ‘The House of Preliminary Detention’.

Zanzibar: Spices, slaves and the spirit of independence - Street Food
The Indian Ocean is one of the world's oldest and largest free trade zones. For centuries, trade and migration have marked the history of the many communities living along its shores.
But the name of one place on the coast of Africa has long captured people's imagination: Zanzibar, also know as the spice island.
For centuries, merchants of of all colours and creeds came to the island off the Tanzanian mainland on wooden vessels - and each of them left their own mark on the island.
As a result, Zanzibar has one of the richest and most diverse food cultures in East Africa encompassing influences from Arabia, India and Europe.
Street food is a term often interpreted literally as food served on the streets, but in Zanzibar the real roads are the ocean, dhows are the link between sea and the land, and the presence of seafood is everywhere on the menus.
The island's wealth was largely founded on the spice trade.
Zanzibar's original settlers were Bantu-speaking Africans. But Arabs, especially Omanis, had a huge influence. They set up trading companies in Zanzibar in the 17th century, ending 200 years of Portuguese dominance on the island.
In 1832, the Sultan of Oman moved his capital from Muscat to Zanzibar, which had become a major slave-trading centre.
He encouraged the commercial farming of cloves, so when the slave trade was abolished in 1873, the spice trade continued to flourish - giving Zanzibar wealth and prestige as well as its legendary name, the spice island.
As anti-colonialism spread across Africa, Zanzibar gained independence in 1963. The following Zanzibari revolution, which aimed to give power back to Africans, became one of the bloodiest chapters in the island's history.
Most of the Omani people were killed, more than 14,000 people were killed, tortured, cut into pieces, murdered, butchered, says Nassor Mazrui, a businessman.
Professor Abdul Sherif from the Zanzibar Ocean Research Institute explains that Arabs were targeted in particular because they were the big land owners in the 19th century, who also owned slaves, so the ideology of slavery was revived to serve in the politcal struggle of the 1960's.... If something like that would happen now, we would call it ethnic cleansing.
The island's Indian community also suffered during the unrest. The aftermath of the revolution saw an exodus of the Asiatic community, but the trading port lost not only its traders, its whole identity was under threat too.
In 1964, after the bloody revolution, Zanzibar hastily entered a union with Tanzania. The union was designed to prevent the spread of chaos in the region, but for many in Zanzibar, this was the beginning of Zanzibar's decline as one of the most prestigious trading ports in East Africa.
In the last four decades, Zanzibar's spice trade has gone into sharp decline. Today, the spice island, once the world's largest clove producer, is more of a tourist resort.
Its cultural heritage has given Zanzibar a rich and varied cuisine, and it continues to inspire the islanders in their struggle for greater autonomy and a new identity.
Al Jazeera visits the island to discover its turbulent history, its culinary heritage and the changes taking place.
Editor's note: This film was first broadcast on Al Jazeera English in 2008.

The Cannibal Warlords of Liberia (Full Documentary)
VICE travels to West Africa to rummage through the messy remains of a country ravaged by 14 years of civil war. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust.
