5 Tips when catching the Shinkansen (bullet train) in Japan with kids
I often receive questions about catching the shinkansen, particularly if it is possible to take your stroller on. To my surprise, the door into the shinkansen is super narrow! My Joolz Geo just squeezed through, but if you have a twin side-by-side stroller you will need to fold it up to get in. Once you are in, there is room to store behind the seats at the back. Women's Kyudo at Sanjusangendo Temple
January 13, 2008: A little bit of the 20 year-old (newly come of age) women's division of the annual kyudo archery tournament at Sanjusangendo temple in Kyoto, Japan. The target is 60m/196'10 away, and at this point 1m/3'3 in diameter. If you listen closely, you can hear the Buddhist ceremony going on in the background.

Japan Travel: Yoshinoyama cherry blossoms best known hanami spot, Nara46
Mount Yoshino (Yoshinoyama), located in Nara Prefecture, has been one of Japan's most famous cherry blossom viewing spots over many centuries. It is said that the first trees were planted more than 1300 years ago along its slopes, and today the mountain is covered by approximately 30,000 cherry trees of many different varieties, mainly of the Yamazakura variety.
Yoshinoyama is not quite a free standing mountain, but is a north-facing mountain slope. It is divided into four areas: the Shimo Senbon (lower 1000 trees) at the foot of the mountain, Naka Senbon (middle 1000 trees), Kami Senbon (upper 1000 trees) and Oku Senbon (inner 1000 trees) at the top of the mountain. Beauty of the cherry blossoms can be enjoyed as visitors ascend the mountain. They walk through Yoshino's touristy town with its various temples and shrines, and can enjoy hanami in the parks and viewpoints along the way.
Yoshinoyama's cherry blossoms usually start blooming in around late March or early April and reach full bloom around early to mid April. According to the different elevation, the blooming season is staggered by a couple of days between the Shimo (lower), Naka (middle) and Kami (upper) Senbon areas as the blossom front gradually moves up the mountain, because the temperature is the lower, the higher the elevation. Therefore, the trees in the Oku Senbon area open considerably later. Keep it in mind that depending on the weather, the starting date and length of the peak period can vary quite a bit from year to year.

The Japanese archery art of kyudo!
Update: apparently the kyudo demonstrator found this video (!) and sent me a message full of hurt that I sped up the video for comic effect, so let me clarify, I sped up the very slow parts because I know you all have the attention spans of goldfish and wouldn't watch thirty seconds of it otherwise, let alone the whole video. In no way do I mean disrespect; to each their own. If you want to know more about kyudo, then by all means do a google search for it and look up some resources, I'm sure it's just the kind of thing some of you would be very interested in! (not me, but that's because I'm violent and impatient -_-)

A Japanese archery (kyudo) demonstration. There were junior high school girls playing volleyball in the building next to us, and a ball rolled in the way of the archers.
You can hear a man say a couple louder statements when the ball appears. This is what the man is saying (like it's not faily obvious):

Sejarah mencatat, hujan bom yang dilakukan sekutu tidak hanya terjadi di Hiroshima dan Nagasaki pada tahun 1945 saat Perang Dunia kedua itu. Tetapi terjadi pula di kota-kota lainnya, salah satunya adalah di kota Kobe. Saat itu kondisi kota benar-benar hancur. Puing-puing reruntuhan tersebar di mana-mana. Hanya satu bangunan yang tetap kokoh, yakni Masjid Muslim Kobe.
Tidak hanya itu, kokohnya masjid juga tetap tegak meski ada gempa bumi yang besar. Bencana gempa Great Hanshin berkekuatan 7,3 skala richter mengguncan kota Kobe pada tahun 1995. Banyak korban berjatuhan akibat bencana hebat ini. Pun dengan bangunan yang secara keseluruhan hancur. Namun lagi-lagi, Masjid Muslim Kobe tetap berdiri tegak di antara puing reruntuhan. Masjid bahkan dibuka dan bertambah fungsi menjadi tempat pengungsian serta penyelamatan para korban.
